Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

To the person who was upset about events not happening often enough... the chances DO go up as you progress... so you should see the Future Age, you get an event every turn most of the time. >.<
It gets ridiculous, lol.

If I turn off random events, does that remove global warming?

If I fortify an injured unit, does it also heal? (either in city or anywhere else)

Does the AI use spying a lot? I've played with it off so far as I'm worried they will strike me every chance they can, but it would be nice to use too.

Global warming stays around even if events are off, IIRC.

Units will heal on any turn they do not move or attack (but they still heal if they defended without moving, e.g. garrison units). If they have the March promotion, they heal even if they moved.

The AI does use spies. If you neglect spy defense, then you should expect your border cities to get poisoned wells as soon as you declare war on your neighbor, for example. Some AIs favor espionage more than others (Sitting Bull is notorious for poisoning water at every opportunity). At the very least you should build your own spies and station them in your cities / on strategic resources.

Thanks. I'll turn off spying too then. There'd always be a resource or city I didn't guard, and I'm having enough trouble as it is.

Good to hear on healing too. Been unsure whether I should choose healing or fortify.

I have the text file this away already, but the writing is still continuing

Sorry if I am German nerve

Try using English, if you can.
Versuchen Sie es mit Englisch, wenn du kannst

Should I work ocean tiles or just keep the city size smaller? Is the 1 commerce worth it?

Makes sense. Even in the Great People city with Globe Theater and National Park I doubt that 1 (+100%) commerce is worth it... then again there's that 5% trade route bonus... regardless.

(Translation: Deinstall the mod. If the writing is still gone, then you probably did something wrong with the deinstallation. Though it's also possible that you installed the mod at the wrong place and overwrote original files (which would be missing now), or that you're using a very old version of Civ which requires users to manually empty the cache after changes (by holding down shift during program start). Unfortunately you didn't answer any of my questions regarding your previous problem, which makes it harder to help.

Also, again, this is an English forum. So far, you haven't to answered to anyone asking you to try in English. If you can't speak English at all, it's probably better to try a German forum, like this one: http://www.civforum.de/civilization-4.php )

Be aware that if you turn off espionage, all the espionage points are converted to culture points and the required culture level for legendary cities doubles. That's fine if you don't want to try for culture victories and don't use culture much at your borders but if you do either of these, the change really screws things up.

I'm spreading Mining Inc. in all my cities since I like the extra production.
But I'm not sure about Sushi. Should I only use it in cities that actually require the food (change farms to cottages, use all good tiles) or in all the cities?

I already have 3 cities with high GPP. (with Sushi)
Putting Sushi in in cities that don't require extra food would only get me extra specialists. Increasing the population also means increasing the Corporation's maintenance in those cities, I think I'd end up losing gold.

I've seen where in the CivilzationIV.ini file you can change the default save path for save games, but I'd like to be sure of what the syntax is (haven't gotten to play around with it yet).

Is it as simple as "C:\Some Folder\Civ4Saves", and the game itself will just create the necessary subfolders for game type and game name? Or is it more nuanced than that?

Thanks for the help folks!

Sounds like someone needs to read "The Power of Sushi"; it's in the strat article thread.

I did read it... twice, I'm still unsure if I should spread it in all my cities.

I spread it into a size 21 city with 20 resources (+10 food).
I lost 10 gold per turn and gained 10 food.

To recover this loss I would probably have to run 2-3 merchants. So the net gain would be 2-3 other specialists.

Anyway, I'm guessing it's best to spread it in all your empire and try to cover the costs by foreign corporation spread. A lot of work...

For best results, spread the corp. to all your cities that have a courthouse. Be careful about spreading corps. to other Civs. They pay the maintenance, true, but they also get the benefits of the corp. Sushi you might spread to a weak Civ somewhere. I would never spread Aluminum Co. or Standard Ethanol to another Civ.

Also, if your Corp. HQ city is your main wealth city, the gold income of that city will increase also. The gold loss from one city is partially offset by the gold income from the Corp. HQ city. Always found the Corp. in your Wall Street city.

Quick follow up question. I'm playing the final years of my Warlords game. I'm a handful of turns from completing the last spaceship parts, and Alexander is neck and neck/right behind me. Does completing the last part give the Auto win for space race in Warlords, or is there an actual launch followed by reaching Alpha Centari?

I kind of got the drift that there was a launch involved somewhere but was thinking it may only be in BtS? I'm finishing this one and then moving onto my newly purchased BtS game, but your guidance on this would be appreciated. Just trying to figure out if I can beat them to it, I may not have to Nuke anybody's capitol to try and get the win. Thanks

There's a launch when the spaceship is completed and the victory comes 11 turns later (at normal speed). If you launch the spaceship before Alexander does and have all the parts built, he can't beat you unless he invades you. In this case, after launch you just have to defend yourself or not have anybody attack you. I usually give in to most tech and other demands at this point. If he launches first kill him.

When you get BTS, you can also use espionage to sabotage his parts (and he can do the same to you).
