Quick Questions and Answers

Can you take over another person's city via your cultural border?

It doesn't seem like you can, yet I don't hear anyone talking about this! This is a HUUUGE change almost as big as no stacking!

Whenever I read a review or an FAQ they don't even mention this ....

Here's a good one:

I made a few deals with three different AI's to sell them my resources for GPT, made all the deals on the same turn, and they were supposed to last 30 turns.

Now it's more than 50 turns later, and the deals are still in effect (ie i don't have access to the resources i traded, and im still receiving the GPT)

I can't figure out how to cancel the deals!!

Is this a bug, or can I just not find the button?

Other deals i've made have ended automatically at the proper time, any thoughts?

This was a bug that was supposed to be fixed with the 1.0.0.62 patch. If you are using that version and still having this issue, I'd suggest looking for posts on the bug forum of others having the same problem, or start a new thread there if you seem to be the only one.

Hi, a quick question ... for Civ5, can i use the debug mode to change relationship with another civ from "War" to "Peace" ? (You could do this in civ4) .. and if so, how ? Thanks !

How can you view what luxury resources you have??

I see strategic ones on the top of the screen, but do not see a button or menu for luxury ones ...

Mouse-over the "happy" icon. Among the details of where your happiness is coming, it'll also list out luxury resources (it will also include any luxury items you are receiving trade). Don't think its given in detail (like how many, trade details, etc.) any where.

How can I change the file designation of the saved games? My puter cannot open the saves.

What do you mean it cannot open the save? What are you trying to open it with? Do you mean you do not find them with the explorer? Are you on Win7 or Vista?

What I mean is that Civ V saves the files as: .Civ5Saves. The title to one of the saves is: Autosave 0040
BC-2400.Civ5Save
CIV5SAVE File

When I try to open the saved file, I get the message that Windows cannot open this type of file and wants me to pick something else to open it with. But, nothing seems to work.

Here is the system info:

Machine name: HARDING-QBD8Z8Y

Have you tried to use the game to open the saves? (Single Player -> Load Game) Also, your system seems to be not good enough to run Civ5, a dual-core processor and 2 GB RAM are in minimum requirements, also the system info that you posted doesn't include the graphics card.

You cannot open save files directly from Windows, like you could in Civ 4. To load the game, you have to do it from within Civ 5. To load the map in the editor, you have to save the map separately from within the game, and then open the map file to take a look. As far as I know there is no way currently to edit and then continue a save game in progress, like we could with the Civ 4 World Builder.

Yes Windows does not know what to use for an app to open civ5save files. You would have to set the affinity to an app that can open it.

The only one I now if is Civ5 right now. Well hex editors can open, but what good would that do you as you would need to know the layout. What did you hope to have done with the save other than run civ5?

I see strategic ones on the top of the screen, but do not see a button or menu for luxury ones ...
There's at least one luxury mod that replicates the existing strategic resource approach.

If you hover over the happiness indicator in the top bar it'll list all the luxuries you currently have access to. If you want a more detailed report you can bring up the Economic Overview (F2) and choose the "Resources & Happiness" tab at the top. The resource readout there will tell you how many of each resource (both strategic and luxury) is available including how many are local, imported, exported, etc. It's not quite as convenient as the mod borad was referring to but it's better than it was on release. :p

Arvantis, are you sure you had finished construction of it?

If you hadn't finished construction of it, my understanding of what's supposed to happen is that it gets removed from the build queue, you probably get a brief message about how you can no longer build it, and the hammers put into it are actually stored but not visible to you. If you finish another monument, it should be able to be constructed again, and it should have the hammers you put in it from earlier.

If the above does not resolve the problem, can you please upload a gamesave and instructions on how to reproduce in the bug reports forum?

Yeah, I already had finished base buildings in my cities (like, library, barracks and monuments).

I wonder if i will find a certain savegame.
If not, I will check it again in a new game.
Theoretically, I should be able to build a national epic in my first 2 cities very early as soon as I have the required tech (Philosophy AFAIK).
Especially the national epic is a wonder which must be build very early to get the most of it.

I will double check if again in a new game and report it in the bug reports forum, aye.

Another pair of questions:

1.) What happens to archery promotions if you upgrade them to riflemen?
Are they lost or transferred into the melee twin (shock or drill)?

2.) How is the city strength vs. enemy units calculated?
By city size?
And how must i qualify the city's defense strength if encounted by enemy units?
This question buggers me cause i wanna know if castles, city walls and Kreml are totally worth it (and, if certain SPs stack with the city defense - like oligarchy, GGs etc).

3.) Any hint how to "foresee" the strategic ressources i need in the lategame (Oil, Coal, Alu)?
My problem is: i tend to build small empires relying on a mediocre culture border.
If i have no luck that my CS will give me the needed strat. ressource, I am forced to build a new city where oil, alu etc pop up.
I'm wondering if i can do something in the first place (settler phase) to secure late game those ressources.
I don't rely on other civs to trade oil etc since this is too uncertain if war breaks out (=> 50% penalty on units relying on those strat. ressources hurts).
I know that it is not THAT bad to have some desert or tundra nearby since there is a chance of success that oil will pop up on such tiles.
What about the game setup called "strategic balanced ressouces"? Does that increase the chance for my small empire to get strat. ressources lategame?

(I know that question #3 is a bit long but i was hestitating to open a new thread for that one - sorry :) ).

They are kept in their archery form, which is to say they are useless when upgraded. Typically I will not take the promotions on archers at all, as I find them sufficiently useful without, and save them until after upgrade. There are mods that change this, so that the promotions are mutated into their melee versions, if you are interested.

Walls, etc. and garrisoned units increase the base combat strength of the city. Damage is calculated as normal, comparing attacker and defender strength, but is then reduced in the case of a city's ranged attack (by half, I think).

Not totally sure about other combat bonus effects you mentioned, as I seldom have cities attacked beyond the early game. Hopefully someone else can give you a better answer.

I think that "strategic balanced resources" insures that the strategic resources are relatively evenly distributed around all players' starting positions. I only used that setting once, and that appeared to be the case, though I cannot vouch for it being so for all resources all the time.

If you want to take a peek at your map, you can save it (save map, from the save menu) and then load it in the map editor tool to have a look around. As far as I know there is no way to edit a save game's map and continue with the game, but you can at least have a look around.

Don't know if this has been asked yet, but:

If I have no iron, and trade for iron from country A
Can I trade that iron to Country B?

No, you can't trade resources that you get from allies, like through trade deals, or through City State gifts.

My Question: Does anyone else have this problem where the in-game Mod Browser menu causes your game to lag for a very long time, almost even freeze? The browser is absolutely unusable for me.
