Random Rants LXIV: Who's Acting Like a Child Now?

No I fully get that, and I'm saying there's nothing wrong with that. As long as money is tied to acquiring our basic survival needs, then there is absolutely nothing morally wrong with doing whatever you can to make as much money as you possibly can in your lifetime. I mean, having a code of ethics is nice and all, but ethics and morals don't put food on your table or put a roof over your head.

I also find the people who usually criticize others for selling out fall into three basic categories: those who aren't making enough money to meet their needs and have become resentful towards those who are, those who are already living a comfortable life so they can actually prioritize things like ethics and morals, and those who see themselves as being negatively impacted by the sellout's quest for riches whether that negative impact is real or merely perceived.

I can understand the idea of someone doing unsavory things to survive, but if you're already comfortable, or even rich, and still are controlled by selfishness and greed, there's something wrong with you.

You know those words, so general and untame, basically sanction such illegalities as trafficking of any kind, including human and drug trafficking, and so many other things I rather not think about. I'm sure it's far from your intention, but I glimpsed it for a second and I was terrified.

Fixed that for you.;)

That's pretty dark bro, I hope you don't truly feel that way, as it would justify a lot of evils. And I am really glad I don't live in a world where everybody feels that way. Would be a very bleak place indeed.

Now you guys are starting to hit on what I am trying to argue in a very roundabout way. I am basically saying that as long as we require money to survive, then pretty much anything goes as long as the objective is to make money. Now, this is obviously not a desirable state for our civilization to be in, so how should we rectify that? Well, by working towards a society that no longer requires people to make money to survive.

So there's no middle ground between some quasi-anarchistic brutal Darwinian capitalism, and demolishing the entire monetary system?
Gotta say Comma, every now and again your posts leave me with no idea if you actually feel that way, or if you're trolling, or just paddling your way out of a previous statement you realise you can't back.

Yes, in the world of OT, there's no place for moderates.

After all, the moderates die first any any self-respecting revolution, right?

oh hey post #9000

rant: what have i done with my life

Sure there's a middle ground (we are living in it now), it's just not logically consistent and is a tad hypocritical. I mean, how can you set up a society in which you must have money to survive, but then limit the ways in which one can obtain that money? That's essentially saying one is not allowed to do whatever is necessary to ensure their own survival. Now I'm not saying those limits are "bad" or harmful per se, but there is a certain amount of inconsistency in such a society. However, sometimes I guess sometimes we need a little logical inconsistency in order to do what is right.

If only people were logically consistent... :p

I hate it when people force me to be the jerk and end a phone call. You know, those people that just drone on and on about meaningless crap no matter how many subtle hints you give that you want the conversation to end. The only way to get them to shut up is to just be the jerk, cut them off, and tell them you are hanging up.

You know what's even worse ? If the guy on the other end is the same kind of social coward I am. None of us are interested in a conversation beyond a formal "I'm still alive, are you ?" exchange, and then we struggle to come up with topics to keep the charade going and endure minute long awkward silences because both of us think it's impolite to end the conversation first.

I just end the conversation if it becomes boring to me. I'll try to do it nicely at first with subtle hints that I'm no longer engaged in the conversation, but if the other person doesn't get the hint I have no problem interrupting them mid-sentence to end the conversation.

I just hate talking on the phone so much. Unless it is an emergency that demands my immediate attention, I would prefer people either speak to me in person or text/email me.

I'll let you in on a great little trick to deal with this... since we're pals;)

Commodore: OK so its getting lat...
Drone: Oh I forgot to tell you about blah blah...
Commodore: Well my wife is asking me t...
Drone: OK, but dude, one more thing, blah blah...
Commodore: (*cuts them off*) Hey... Lemme call you back, man, lemme call you back, lemme call you back
Drone: OK, dude call me back
Commodore: (hangs up) Pffft! Yeah right I'm going to sleep/ play Civ/watch the game/ whatever I was doing before...

Just keep quickly saying "Lemme call you back, lemme call you back" Works every time.

You're welcome;)

Just make sure to unplug/turn off your phone , or people will call you back to ask when you're going to call them back.

Nah, you'd think that, but it doesn't happen... by the time the person is in the "droning on" ie making conversation just for the sake of it, they aren't really talking about anything important anyway, and 5 mins after they get off the phone with you they will forget what they were even talking about.

Okay, I didn't want to admit this in case she ever finds this account, but the person who is usually droning on about nothing on the phone is my wife. That's why I try to end it nicely at first, but she never gets the hint so then i have to be a cloaca to her to get her off the phone.

I figured... "Lemme call you back" is the perfect way to get off the phone with the wife, without having to be a "cloaca" whatever that means .:)

Just add a "sweetie/honey/baby/sugar/muffin" etc to the end of it like "Lemme call you back babe" 60% of the time it works every time. Try it you'll see. I just used it on my wife literally 5 mins ago;)

You clearly have not studied biology or Roman history or play Mass Effect. A cloaca is a sewer and also a bird's 'sewer system'. :)

Well I just saw the biggest load of BS ever. It seems if you enable fan funding on your YouTube account and you RECEIVE any donations from someone located in Japan, then you have to pay Japanese taxes on it. I really hope I'm reading that wrong because that makes absolutely no sense. I am not a Japanese citizen, nor am I located in Japan so I should not be responsible for any income taxes they have because one of their citizens decides to give me a donation.

It also makes no sense that the IRS taxes all American citizens on all income they receive, even if they haven't set foot in the US for decades.
