They treat it as if you're selling something in Japan and thus receiving an income in Japan, rather than exporting from the US to Japan (in which case the buyer/donor would have to pay import tax and whatever VAT they charge over there).Well I just saw the biggest load of BS ever. It seems if you enable fan funding on your YouTube account and you RECEIVE any donations from someone located in Japan, then you have to pay Japanese taxes on it. I really hope I'm reading that wrong because that makes absolutely no sense. I am not a Japanese citizen, nor am I located in Japan so I should not be responsible for any income taxes they have because one of their citizens decides to give me a donation.

Report his arse!
I'm really curious about how Japan is going to enforce that law against you... Or does the IRS enforce on Japan's behalf? But I disagree with that logic since I am not selling anything. It would be more like a charity asking for donations, since it is completely up to the viewer as to whether or not they want to give me any money. Plus, I don't have to pay any Japanese taxes on any ad revenue I earn from viewers in Japan, so why should I have to pay taxes on donations?
The only thing I can think of is the Japanese government may be trying to discourage it's citizens from donating money to foreign YouTubers because that would essentially be like taking that money out of their economy. If that's the case, it seems a little more understandable, but I'm still not paying their taxes. And if the Japanese government ever did come after me for those taxes, I'm sure there's a lawyer out there that is good enough to defend me. I also think YouTube should allow content creators to disable fan funding from certain countries. That way someone like me who doesn't want to pay Japanese taxes can block anyone from Japan from donating money.
