On my hiking trip last weekend I must have come into contact with poison ivy. At first I didn't realize it. On Sunday's part of the hike I started feeling some itching on my hands, but I figured they were mosquito bites. They kinda looked like it at first.
On Tuesday morning my boss was like "Hey that's poison Ivy"
By Wednesday afternoon my right arm, right above the elbow, was blowing up in red and oozing out some slimy see-through stuff. Orange crust was starting to form in places too. The affected area was maybe 10 cm in diameter. My left arm was affected too but it was smaller splatches as opposed to a big wound. I put bandaids on the smaller things and used my first aid kit to put on some proper non-stick wound stuff on the big wound. Went to bed with a mental note to definitely go see a doctor in the morning.
By Thursday morning I was at the doctor's and they were like "damn" and "that's infected" and put me on 2 types of antibiotics. I think. At least one of them is.
So now it's Monday and the antibiotics are working. Slowly though. All the oozing has stopped and the big wound on the right arm is a lot better. But it still looks like a pretty big deal. Nothing bad is going to happen, but it is probably going to leave a mark.
If this rate of improvement continues then I will be fine, but I will be done the one set of pills tomorrow, so I will probably go see the doctor again. The other set of pills lasts me for 10 more days but I think the other pills do a lot of the heavy lifting.
I sleep with everything bandaged up and in long sleeves (and over the weekend gloves) so that I don't scratch myself when I'm asleep.
Initially my doctor gave me the choice of a creme or the pills. And she said that the pills work a lot faster but there are a lot of side-effects: insomnia, irritability, occasional stomach issues, and a couple other things. "All those things already happen to me all the time anyway" I said to the doctor and went with the pills. With all that I can deal, what I can't deal with is getting a creme all over everything. Plus I want it gone ASAP
I don't even seem all that irritated either, which I find disappointing. I was hoping to turn into a jerk. And no stomach problems either, at all, which is great. As for insomnia, I have been chilling myself out with extra strength ibuprofen before bed and that works great.
Stupid poison ivy
