Random Rants LXXII - What is wrong with us?

I would also caution against getting too fit.
Sometimes -especially if a bit but not too much alcohol is involved- you'll be able to run for hours which can be frustrating to you and the other party who will sometimes take it as a personal insult.

In my experience open and honest communication about these issues prevents anyone from getting offended. It can be hard to talk about that stuff but it's a lot easier than the alternative(s)...

In my case that had actually been the goal.
The last time I did also my regular workout, and the endurance for the last part was pretty amazing. I did what you said though, explained my workout schedule, and said that I'd need to finish that session with a short sprint on my own. I think the endurance got me some respect in that case, but the workout partner was someone for whom it was only the second running session, so maybe not the best standard to pick.

And I really prefer this situation above too little endurance, because at least you're doing something.
Well...next time only 50% of the workout, gonna see next week Friday probably (at least that's how it's scheduled right now).

1. I was supposed to have a date a couple of days ago, only to be stood up.

Ouch, that sucks.
One of the youtube channels I regularly watch recommends having enough backup. One person doesn't matter if you can simply text another one.
I haven't really been that much in this situation, but had recently like 5 numbers available at once. That felt pretty good, but not sure if I can collect them that regularly.

Because previously I would have asked my mother to help out, but unfortunately, that's no longer possible. But no, I'm not intending to wait until next year to buy a new T-shirt or two.
If you were in the Southern Hemisphere you'd have two summers a year. And you'd be surrounded by Australians, so it evens out.
Darn! I was hoping you'd embarrass yourself by making a lame joke about new threads!
Don't worry, CFC always has some of that.

Man, guys, you're really stretching (wait, no, maybe a better word is "pulling" in this case) to try to get some of these exercise metaphors to fit.

You don't get to muscle in on us just like that, choxie dear.

Yeah, what the mouse dressed in purple said, choxorn!

Yes, the exercise metaphors...

Gawd boys, even I know what you're talking about.

Noo… I've watched almost every episode of Lip Sync Battle that's ever come out and I wouldn't ever say it's ‘quality’ programming.

Sure, you wouldn't. But anyone who is a fan of the show would say it is quality entertainment. That's the whole point I'm getting at. Quality, in regards to entertainment, is 100% subjective to each person, and the only thing coming close to resembling an "objective" measure of quality in entertainment is how popular something is. So it is the entertainment that has the broadest appeal that can be considered to be "objectively" high-quality.

Because you have to remember: To define how high-quality any given thing is, you first have to determine how well that thing achieves its stated purpose. For entertainment, it's stated purpose is to amuse people. So the more people that are amused by a given form of entertainment, the higher quality we can assume that form of entertainment is independent of our own subjective tastes.

EDIT: To better illustrate my point, just look at the "Best Civ Game" thread and the poll there. Both you and I would agree that Civ 3 is the best (and thus highest quality) Civ game in the series, yet Civ 4 is clearly getting the most votes. So that would mean Civ 4 is what we could "objectively" say is the highest quality Civ game according to the members of this site since it has clearly done the best job of entertaining the largest number of members of this site.

most people can tell the difference between:

a) objective quality, or craftsmanship, and
b) "how much I personally like something"

Not really as evidenced by the responses in this thread. Plus, as I already said, there really is no such thing as objective quality when it comes to entertainment. The closest we can get to objective quality in entertainment is measuring how popular a given form of entertainment is.

if you can't distinguish the craftsmanship that went into something like The Room from the craftsmanship that went into something like Dunkirk then I can't help you

EDIT: this is intersubjectivity, which is basically how you seem to be using "objectively" in your posts

As Dachs notes, that's not what objective means at all. What it should mean is "expressing or dealing with facts or conditions as perceived without distortion by personal feelings, prejudices, or interpretations".

I went swimming on Thursday for about an hour and I seem to have injured my ankle somehow. This seriously sucks because I had been getting a ton of exercise this summer and now I can't really do anything and I have no idea how long this is going to last.

@Lexicus will have better insight since he did it professionally, but IME the most common swimming injury with ankles was because you overextended during an underwater flip or while kicking off from the wall. You should be fine walking on it as long as the ankle is supported. If you don't swim regularly and don't want to deal with it happening again, you can do ankle stretches as part of your usual routine and that'll resolve future over-extension problems with swimming or running.

Ha, not professionally, just competitively...it might be possible to injure an ankle just while kicking normally especially if it was weakened by past injury. Without more details I can't say anything else really.
