Random Rants : Pissed tae th' gills

I haven't played a board game in over a year, even the fun versions of Life or Monopoly where we the players ended up stealing from and cheating the bank and/or other players more than actually playing the game.

Do you mean that you just helped yourself to bills from other players' stacks? Cheeky!

The only way we made Monopoly fun was by talking like mafia bosses in The Godfather.

That game sucks balls like <insert pornstar here>.

Stop busting my balls, Anti.

Most people play it wrongly though, of course.

I wholeheartedly agree, Monopoly is a terrible game. The stealing was pretty much the only thing that made it fun.

Even played right it's a pretty terrible game. It takes hours, there is far too much cash in circulation at the game start so the auction rule doesn't come up often, the random movement element is far too determinative, and player elimination occurs over the course of a game so that most people at the end are sitting there twiddling their thumbs while the remaining two players dance around the track until one of them gets boardwalked in the facehole.

Mayfair, not Boardwalk! :)

You should modify the rules then.

Eventually you'll have carved and painted the dining room table into a large work of art depicting the status of a regional economy and printed out a couple new 500-page rulebooks. But that's fine because winter is coming and you have nothing better to do.

I once was playing a game of Star Wars Monopoly and forced a guy to tear down a hotel he'd built on Dagobah. All the geekdoms aligned as I told him he shouldn't have built it in a swamp.

Semi-rant: That oh-so-frustrating feeling when a pretty nurse is bending over mere inches away and you really, really, really want to look down, yet you must look away, because you're nice and you're mindful of manners, and respectful.

Did he build another hotel in the swamp, which also sank into the swamp?

I'm not getting the reference.

That means you'll finish playing later, which means they'll stay over…

Rather means that it'd be aborted.
Didn't happen though.
Also no single females in there, so doesn't matter.

Settlers of Catan makes good foreplay anyways.

lolwut o_O?

I wish I had friends to play boardgames with.

I haven't played a boardgame in years. :(

Just get one, and ask some people.
There are more people who are sometimes bored.

tststs, that's not a semi-rant, but a real one.

I've never watched any Monty Python, other than a few clips on YouTube.

How dare you call yourself a UKian?

I have performed the dead parrot speech and watched Fawlty Towers, just not Monty Python. :)

Phrossack, quizbowl, like chess and CFC is a great place to meet people with similar interests. Real history isn't all just facts and knowing random anecdotes that quizbowlers love to laugh at for some crazy reason. I will tell you that you seem like a very intelligent individual who just needs to gel together and find something you love. Your self-depreciation is not the way to go about things. Once you find something that you truly enjoy, I promise things do get better.
Well, thanks! I was in quizbowl very briefly in high school, and found that I wasn't all that useful since I don't know my literature, plays, science, or math. Maybe I just quit because of the time it took. Some of my friends are quizbowlers, but we all go to different schools. No idea if my school has a quizbowl team, since it's largely a commuter campus.

But generally speaking, the things I really enjoy (riding, disappearing into the woods, camping, float trips, certain games, etc) are not possible at school, aren't group activities, and so on. And because most students are commuters, campus life is pretty dead, at least as far as I can tell. Maybe I just don't know where to look.
giant, helpful post
Thanks for putting such effort into a reply!:D

As for focusing on my own achievements, it's tough because I have so few. My knowledge of history is broad and shallow for the most part. There's no real benefit other than entertainment in understanding, say, the role and effectiveness of armor in medieval warfare or the methods of the Mongol conquests. Well, there might be, if I can get a doctorate and write my theses on these kinds of things. Even then, I'm not sure how useful a history professor who specializes in things like pre-modern warfare and steppe nomads is to society. I've had this discussion numerous times here, they don't always go too well, I can't remember getting any definite answers, and I'd be crucified if I asked it again. Right now, I figure that if society has created some jobs in which I could get paid to do what I want regardless of how useful that post actually is, I might as well game the system and take advantage of it.

I could definitely become a lot more knowledgeable about history if I bothered to read more. Trouble is, I'm piss-poor at time management. My time just seems to disappear, probably due to being on the Internet too much (mainly here). And as of late I've been getting flooded with projects. Probably not much work by others' standards, but it's a lot for me, even though I don't have a job. I also waste my weekends on video games; that time might be better spent on projects and reading, but I feel I need the break because otherwise I don't do anything enjoyable.
