(Concise) AACR2 and MARC records suck...

Some dude I used to go to school with a long time ago had a bit of a run in with police the other day. He got shot.

From what I remember he was a pretty cool dude.

Ah. We do have a Slavic Studies prof, and he's pretty cool. Took a class with him last semester, which is where I got that opinion. :D

It was particularly frustrating since the classes are still in the course catalog, even though the professor left several years ago. I was excited to get to take three separate classes on the Soviet Union alone, to say nothing of the rest of Russian history! His absence is what led me to Middle Eastern History, and Arabic, instead.

Yes, I agree. Which is why I printed Xenophon out during freshman year of high school using my high school's printers. :groucho:

It costs us $.10 per page we print at the library. :(

AAARGH I KNOW RIGHT?!? Mistaking the kursii for thaa doubled the time I spent on Arabic homework last night. :cringe:

I have a fun time with Daad and Saad, personally. Much easier to do, obviously, but its enough to make me stop and say "no, wait..."

I'm completely ridiculous. Its only barely February and I already have a book wish list a mile long. I have so many books I own and have yet to read, yet I feel the desire to obtain more. The interest in their content is genuine, and I feel that I should, and in some cases, must read them. I also feel that getting them now rather than later (in life, that is) is better, since I can then read them at my leisure; they're not going anywhere. I'm considering getting most of them on amazon soon, since I recently discovered their fantastic discount system, where the more you get at once, the more is deducted from your total price. I don't understand how they can afford to do anything but negate the shipping charges, but I'm not going to argue.

Here's the list I've assembled so far. I have a feeling it may grow still.

Spoiler :

Xenophon - The Anabasis
Herodotus - The Landmark Herodotus: The Histories
Thucydides - The Landmark Thucydides: A Comprehensive Guide to the Peloponnesian War
Plutarch - The Lives
Karl Marx - Das Kapital, Volume I-III
Georg Lukacs - History of Class Consciousness
Adam Smith - On the Wealth of Nations
John Maynard Keynes - The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money
V.I. Lenin - What is to be Done?
V.I. Lenin - Imperialism: The Final Stage of Capitalism
Leon Trotsky - History of the Russian Revolution
Leon Trotsky - The Revolution Betrayed
Leon Trotsky - Fascism: What it is and How to Fight It
Leon Trotsky - My Life: An Attempt at an Autobiography
Geoffrey Hosking - The First Socialist Society: A History of the Soviet Union from Within

Howard Zinn - A People's History of the United States, 1492-Present
Stephen Katkin - Steeltown, USSR: Soviet Society in the Gorbachev Era
John Reed - Ten Days that Shook the World
Naomi Klein - The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
Plato - The Republic
Thomas Paine - Collected Writings

I feel the same way. If I am a shop-o-holic, totally un-Asian and not frugal with my money at all, my peccadillo (or hell, let's exaggerate, full blown sin) would be with books. I imagine that this is what girls feel like when confronted with the opportunity to buy clothing: they've got to get that blouse to match with that skirt and the accessories to go along with it. That's sort of like exactly like me and books. I don't know why I don't just buy them online in the form of those eBook things. There's just something about holding a book physically in your hands. Even the smell and the feel are just nice.

But anyway, I was ranting. Back in...let's say December, I got about eight books to read for pleasure. I've only read about five of those books, but this month, I ordered more. Now I have another huge stack of books grinning at me to my left. They're beckoning me to drop my homework and to read them. I can't help it, they're too interesting. I'll probably slash the stack in half and then buy more...I'm going to be so sad in college, when my parents won't be as free with their money. I'll just be a poor college student without books...

Unlike you though, Mr. Cheezy, with your authoritative books that people would respect you for reading, I'm just reading fluffy stuff in comparison.

Here is a list of the books sitting to my left, not including the textbooks and school books.

Write Now: The Complete Program for Better Handwriting. Not really a book per se, but I included it because italic handwriting is pretty awesome. That's my blurb.
The Guns of August
The Selfish Gene
A Thousand Splendid Suns
Kafka on the Shore
The New Chinese Empire
Breaking the Spell
A Brief History of Time
The China Study
Castles of Steel
Our Dumb World

If you're wondering about the order, they're arranged in book size, except for Write Now, that's with my textbooks.

It always pisses me off when people talk about "the real America", as though though some portions of it are just the char on the steak.

How is it snowing this much but not sticking at all?

Well, okay, there's some, but it was already there yesterday and not even an inch of it. :p
