Random SG 01 - The Randomness Begins

The quinquereme was up northwest to see if there was any coastal water passage we had missed out on but there wasn't and it's currently travelling down the west coast on the way to the east.

We don't have a third worker yet, we should probably try to get one out as soon as possible. As for the trade route I think a food caravan to Utique would be good because all those Plains are holding them back a little.

Well done. We're looking good. Here's the line up:

Bugs <= on deck
Optional
Polus <= Traveling. Skipped until return.
Teproc
Gurra <= just played
Eric <= UP

Well now that we've done the NC, we have the Machinery/Education choice to make.

Education is the safer choice, allowing us to start getting ahead of the AI. Machinery is more risky because it's only really worth it if it leads tous taking Persepolis, but it's an option.

One thing to keep in mind is that we need Carthage to get a little bigger, so I wouldn't build another Settler in there, if we want it to support the Writer's Guild and a University when we get there.

Our GPT is strong, I'm tempted to buy the fourth settler for 500 gold, unless someone has a much better idea for our money.

I think I like the Education plan better at this point. And if we do buy the settler, I like building a Cargo Ship in Carthage next.

Education is the better long term investment. We missed the first prime window to take Persepolis.

I like buying the settler and focusing on the cargo ship. Beakers and cash flow focus right now will pay off in the long run.

Alright so here's the save (sorry for the delay I've been in and out of bed because of a fever :( )

Anyways, let's get started:

Turn 90: Suleiman offers 6 gold per turn for our wine resource, but I decline since we already have 23 each turn and that's pretty stable.

Turn 91: Our ship moves South next to Capetown. Put worker next to Utique working on a farm. We are now researching drama & poetry.

Turn 92: Ship continues journey

Turn 93:Ships sails forward. We're now at a point of getting a social policy; I took the final policy in the Tradition tree because it gives 15% growth, free aqueducts and considering that we're getting 2 new cities soon , these bonuses greatly help.

Turn 94:Build Lighthouse in Utique to get food bonus

Turn 95:Carthage has finished settler and it is being brought near Cape Town :goodjob: (In between the Iron and the archer). Unfortunately, considering we don't have enough money, we'll have to wait to buy the Settler so I have started production on a caravan for Utique.

Turn 96:Worker finished building truffles near Carthage. It will be going north to develop our iron resource

Turn 97: We have enough money to buy the 2nd settler :D so he is bought. Unfortunately, we can't continue our sea voyage around the continent because Suleiman's territory blocks our path :( Ship will return near our territory. Also noticed that there was a farm near Utique that wasn't fully built; so the worker will finish it. We have begun research on Theology.

Turn 98: Noticed a Persian Pikeman next to our border.... :shifty: The tile where the Persian settler/warrior was claimed by Utique, so the small Persian 'expedition' has moved North.

Turn 99: Caravan brought to Utique for the +4 :c5food: Carthage has now begun production on a worker. Persia has constructed the Chichen Itza

Turn 100:Worker has started developing the Iron resource. The first settler has arrived at its destination while the 2nd is still on the coast.

I also got a message showing the ranks of the happiest Civs... looks like we're dead last :(

Here's the lineup:

Bugs <= UP
Optional <= on deck
Polus <= Traveling. Skipped until return.
Teproc
Gurra
Eric <= just played

I have the save, although I won't play until everyone weighs in.

The happiness isn't surprising. The AI get some ridiculous happy bonus at this level. It's worse at deity.

I would have sold the wine to Suleiman. Anyone see any reason why we shouldn't execute that deal?

We need to think about what our next social policy will be. I think we should go for the patronage line, at least until rationalism comes along.

Looks like we have a third wine tile available. I think we need to develop that and sell it too.

I would have sold the wine to Suleiman. Anyone see any reason why we shouldn't execute that deal?

Considering that we are at 4 happiness plus the fact that we are going to expand soon with 2 new cities, our happiness is going to go down. If we would have sold the wine we would have had less happiness and more problems

Oh, it isn't our extra wine, it is our first wine. In that case I agree to keep it.

OK, 36 hours have passed and only Eric has expressed his opinion. You are a loquacious group. Playing now.

Pre-flight - turn 100 (375 BC) – We have an extra truffles and an extra wine. Suleiman is dead broke with a serious negative cash flow. Check out the other AI and Attila can trade. Give him truffles and wine for ivory and 7gpt. Checking the cities everything looks like it is properly managed, leave everything as is.

IBT – :sleep:

Turn 101 (350 BC) – Settle Hippo Regius where Eric had the settler placed. We get a free aqueduct, monument, and harbor in the city. With no improved tiles available it is a pretty food poor location so I select a granary (due in 20 turns). Once I get a worker down there to build a few farms and cut the forest, the food will increase and the time to build will decrease.

Garrison two units to save 2gpt. Move the settle that will become our fourth city down the coast. I personally would put it on that nice plains hill tile, but I can’t remember exactly where we decided to put it so I go back to the thread to find out. I was right.
Right now we will need four turns of income to get 240G to purchase a work boat (to work the pearls). City expansion in 8 turns. We should be OK on :c5happy: in the meantime.

It just occurred to me that something else we will need to start thinking about is getting some tourism flowing.

IBT – :sleep:

Turn 102 (325 BC) – Utique completes its lighthouse. Select a composite bow since we are in seventh place militarily. Move our Utique worker to improve the gold tile.

IBT – :sleep:

Turn 103 (300 BC) – Carthage worker completes, select another. That will give us one worker per city. Move the new worker south toward Hippo. Renew the trade route with Cape Town.

IBT – :sleep:

Turn 104 (275 BC) – Settle Gades on the plains hill. The new city can work a truffles tile from Carthage and will grow a new citizen in 7. Based on that I dial up a library. Start the worker on the gold tile, but that will take 6 turns to improve. Utique will grow in 4 turns. Hippo will grab the pearls tile in 5. Rather than suffer a turn of unhappiness, I slow Utique’s growth a turn and get a few extras hammers.

IBT – Darius pops up and says truffles for 7gpt is no longer a good deal for him. I’m not willing to drop to 6 yet so I decline to make a deal.

Turn 105 (250 BC) – The only AI that has any money to spend is Darius. Both Suleiman and Haile have negative gpt. Rather than have our truffles rot, I make the deal for 6 gpt.

IBT – Theology comes in and we enter the medieval era. Machu Picchu completes in a far away land.

Turn 106 (225 BC) – Carthage completes a worker. Dial up a lighthouse next. Select HBR for our next tech – on our way to education, plus we can start making Forest Elephants. We now have four iron on line, not that we can do anything with it. Start that worker on another plains farm for Carthage.

IBT – Suleiman completes the Statue of Zeus.

Turn 107 (200 BC) – Purchase the work boat in Hippo to use on the pearls.

IBT – Darius starts to move his settler north.

Turn 108 (175 BC) – HBR => Math. Start on a farm outside Hippo. Move the archer on the now useless settler block towards Gades for garrison duty.

IBT – Utique expands and separates the Persian settler from the Persian warrior.

Turn 109 (150 BC) – Momentarily go unhappy and bring the pearls on line. Now +3 :c5happy:

IBT – Connecting the gold makes Cape Town our friend (45/30)

Turn 110 (125 BC) – Utique: Comp bow => forest elephant. Carthage: lighthouse => work boat. Promote the comp bow to rough terrain since Persepolis is on a hill.

Post-flight – a builder set of turns. We might want to consider trapping that Persian settler where it is. I don’t think the AI is programmed to build a settler when they already have one. Math will come in next turn. Keep moving towards education. Next tech will be currency. Markets will really kick our economy into high gear.

Here's the present situation in the north:

We can move the warrior to block the settler.
