Rat25 - AWE Training Game #2

I have played my turn set. Not my best outing, I made a few stupid moves. I lost an army out of greed and stupidity mixed with bad RNG. Losing 5 hp to a regular spear on flat land really sucked:spear: I did get an MGL later with a rider, and we now have a rider army. At least partial redemption. I settled 4 cities, though my last was a mistake. Anyway, here is the turn-log:

Excellent!! Rider army :woohoo: . And we're expanding again. Sounds like we got some great promotion luck. And, no biggie about the army getting lost. It's really hard to keep 2 defense armies alive with longbows and MDI's lurking about, and bad RNG can strike at any moment.

I can't take this until wednesday, so Tad could go then Rat should be back and he can take it, and it will probably be wednesday by then.

According to your stats, we essentially have 17.33333 workers, while we have 24 cities. Even with industrious, this is definately not good enough, especially in AW. Not enough workers can make a game a pain, while too many can just be joined to cities or saved for rails. I'd suggest putting some junk towns on workers.
 
I arrived today but am tired and jetlagged...if Tad doesn't take it, I can play 20 turns tomorrow

I managed to play 10 turns yesterday after all...sent the files to my office but with the incorrect word file.

Will post the correct file tonight.

Highlights of my turn:

Defeated plenty of enemy units. Mongols have keshiks and Spain now has conquistadores, a pain really...I had many elite victories, but only managed to get 2 MGL on turn 9. One was used for the pentagon and the other for a second rider army. With those armies, we should now be able to expand again. Golden Age is over, metal due next turn.

For anyone who hasn't played AW with conquistadors they are a real pain. Take great care to cover workers and cities with a defender. 6 movement ignoring terrain is very large and it is easy to miss the fact that some worker stack can be lost. If you do leave a stack unprotected carefully count to make sure there is no square you cannot see within 6.

For example, in ThERat's picture a conquistador from Asturias could take one city and kill several worker stacks. I would make taking Asturias a priority actually for this reason - we have to cover a lot more units because of it.

I have learned this the hard way and still occasionally miss something.

Pre-Turn
familiarize myself with the game. We still have the GA. Enemies have plenty of towns and awful UU's are looming. Spain's conquistadors aren't fun really...
go through towns, make some minor tweaks attack and defeat a mace with a e-sword, no leader

IT we defeat a second mace with rider on defense and then get chemistry

1.560AD
go 4:1 on offense, losing a mace...the front is very scattered, bu nothing much we can do about it at the moment


IT Mongols are now approaching with keshiks, not so good, they have a ton of money btw
no attacks altogether

2.570AD
there are plenty of attackers and we defeat 12 of them losing 1 rider
riverbend is threatened though by keshiks and Acav

IT we lose 2 units, but defeat an ACav and Riverbend still stands
Thebes finishes KT

3.580AD
defeat 8 units to get some breather at he front lines
no MGL although we get many elite wins

IT no attacks this time

4.590AD
quiet trn as not many enemies are in our land and our armies mostly heal

IT no attacks again, bu a big stack from Egypt made up of maces approaches

finally manage to achieve something and raze a Mongol city for 217gold
defeat a few units, attack Denver and redline army...scary

IT we lose a rider, but defeat mace and LB and the army survives...more enemy units are coming

6.610AD
defeat many units again specially the Egyptian mace stack around Riverbend, ge fed up as I didn't gain a MGL despite many many elite wins
GA about to end, increase lux to 30% to prevent any riots

IT lose an exposed rider and spot the first conquistador...that will be dangerous

7 620AD
while clearing some maces next to Roverbend redline rider army...against a mace...ridiculous

8.630AD
collect 4 more slaves via settler pairs
rush rax in Roverbend for 38gold to get the rider army back to full health

9.640AD
finally get a MGL and use it to rush the pentagon, 4 units armies on pangaea are a must
and because I waited so long, get this...a 2nd rider army

IT lose a slave to a conquistador, these guys are hellish

10.650AD
defeat a few units, put a settler in place to settle next turn north of our capital
we need to continue to expand and produce settlers at all times

I left one of the 2 rider armies unmoved for the next player to decide what to do with it. There are plenty of units around Riverbend, but with a 2d army we should go on the offense

Pre-turn- I can place the scientist in Xinjian on a tile, and it gets a happiness gold, and then I hire a scientist off somewhere (Shantung) w/ overrun food for growth. I also switch Hangchow to a rider because it's further from the front, and change Shanghai to a musket, which will finish next turn. Then I move the 16/18 overseers army out to conquer some Mongol junk towns for cash. The MDI army out east is guarding 8 slaves. It would take 10 turns to take them back to safety, not worth it, so I will disband them next turn, heal the army, and send it out to raze some junk mongol towns nearby. Why do we have an eMDI in Beijing when it's not needed for MP? I move it out. Find a couple MM errors.

IBT- Conq comes out of nowhere and retreats to eSword. Another kills it. Metallurgy comes in. Set research to 70% on miltrad. 12 turns.

Found Chengdu. I rename the cities to get the number thing going. More killings, and put a fourth rider in that army. Send Tad2 to kill Santander.

IBT- Lose a fortified pike in riverbend (with walls!) and an elite rider to an MDI and an LB. Another MDI dies. A conquistador gets killed.

First things first: raze Choyr with mace army, yields 260g. Next, Ulaangom is razed with Overseer 1 and it yields 270g. Kill a spear in Santander.
Rider army unscathed kills 9 hp worth of longbowmen (3 of em). Then another AC dies without touching the rider army.

Stopping here for the night, I gotta take this off my plate tonight because I have real stuff to finish (though not as fun). I have time tomorrow and should be able to finish. Here's a pic though

Sword army razes Santander. But it's now at 6 hp, so I have to kill a nearby LB with a rider. Spot a mongolian settler pair with rider army, so I let it heal while I wait for them to build a giant bank in that small village where they will deposit a signifigant portion of their treasury. I will then rob it. Invincible rider army kills three wounded units but loses 2 hps.

IBT- Retreat 3 keshiks and kill a longbow. A conquistador appears, and the spanish land a spear. That is not sufficient to destroy us. Silly AI.

Doh! I accidently kill the Mongolian settler pair by a misclick before they founded a town. Dammit, that's 250g out the window. Ah well, I find
another mongolian city to kill. And the mace army pillages mongolian furs, which they were trading so we just got someone elses lux as well.
Most AI's are sending their units to RiverBend probably because treehouse and Sinkiang are empty. Let's keep them empty so we don't have to
shift our artillery stash too much.

IBT- Conquistador dies to elite rider fortified on a mountain. Dumard. Spanish keep unloading those dad gum spears.

Found Tientsin. During some cleanup at the front, we get sun tzu. It was about my 20th elite victory, so it was about time. All roads around
Karakorum are pillaged. Many keshiks are left on mountains, so it will be a bloody ibt.

IBT- DAMMIT! A conquistador razes Xinjian (the junk town one). God dammit. Also lose some slaves.

Kill many keshiks, fill that army up, and send the old one out to take Leiden. Kill a spanish longbow. Darhan is almost taken, it only has an LB
left. Mongols are resources, luxless, hopeless, yet they still have 8000g for us to steal. Nice. We have 9 cannons, so I'd keep the cannon builds going.

I would use the Rider army to capture Austurias if you can. If a boat landed a Conq in that city we could lose a core town.

I would nix the undefended workers near the border and put them somewhere safe if they can't be guarded.
Asturias has made me nervous for some time, I definitely feel it must go. As far as undefended workers, definitely too much fog and too many 2 move AI units out there. I want 2 muskets covering workers out on the edges. This is my "got it" post, I will play tonight and tomorrow.
