RB25 - The Golden Five

[EDIT] Fixed BC to AD

1500 AD
The final move I made in my inherited turn was swapping to build the grocer in Straussburg. :)

1505 AD
Liberalism
RB25-AD-1505_Liberalism.JPG

Liberalism is researched and I select Economics as our free tech for the GM. :woohoo:

Wait a minute. What's this event message?
RB25-AD-1505_Mansa-Beat-Us.JPG

Mansa converted to Free Markets. Meaning he researched Economics the previous turn. Sure enough there's no second GM in Cornelia. :gripe:

Oh well. I set research to Constitution.

Civics
RB25-AD-1505_Civics.JPG

I converted to Slavery and Free Markets.

Tuscany builds Longbowman and starts a Jewish Monastery. A Barb archer popped up N of [EDIT] Straussburg Cornelia and I deployed Robin Hood to whack it. I also deployed Dumbo to play sentry in the tundra fog. The Ninia found JC continent.

1510 AD
In Tuscany, I hurried the Jewish Monastery by using the whip and will let the overflow spill in to a Hindu Monastery. :whipped:

1515 AD
Our missionary spreads Hinduism to Bactrian. Barb Archer pillaged a cow pasture N of [EDIT] Straussburg Cornelia.

1520 AD
Wife comes home with leftover quesadillas and cheese sticks. Yummm! :yumyum: Italian cookies and liquor make a great snack! Cai Lun (GE) born in Cornelia. We have our GE. I don't have a sceenshot on the GP odds but IIRC it was about 15% to create a GE. We have enough GP to trigger our third GA however we should save the GE for our last GA. Hopefully we can popped a GP soon. Robin Hood whack-an-arch. :hammer:

1525 AD
Lillehammer completed University and continues Hermitage. The stooges, Curly Joe and Shemp, discovered how to start the bulldozers near Cornelia and bulldozed a cottage in their mayhem. Farmers claimed the tile for themselves. Also the stooges, Larry and Joe, decided to join in on the fun and they unfortunately bulldozed a cottage themselves. More farmers claimed the tile for themselves. The stooges fearing the wrath of Sullla run to the tundra. :run:

The liquor is hitting me, I have a full stomach, and need . I'll finish my turn set tomorrow.

!!! How did we lose that Merchant?! Obviously Mansa went right for it after he did Education, but I have no idea how he researched the tech in only 5 turns. We would take that long to do it ourselves, and our GNP is way ahead of his...!

Well, it's my fault, for researching Guilds and trading for Banking. Doing that the other way around would've taken one turn fewer and we would've nailed Liberalism on time. Oh well. I'd recommend changing Venice's specialists back over to merchants, since now we do need a Great Merchant out of that city.

And a Great Engineer from Cornelia is great news, at least. :woohoo: Now all we need is a Merchant out of Venice, one Prophet, and either a second Prophet or one more Engineer.

Wow, losing out on that free Merchant really stinks. Nothing you could do about Mansa discovering a tech on the interturn, we just got unlucky there... :(

One other question - what was going on here?

I'm all for humorous turn reports, but what was actually going on here? I wasn't able to figure it out. :) I would usually just check the save, but I'm running off to teach a class right now and I don't have the time.

The Great Engineer though... :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

I guess three workers farmed over a cottage in the capital, other two did the same on another cottage, and then went chopping in the north? :crazyeye:

Wow, an Engineer! How many more GP do we need now? Only two prophets and one merchant? It looks like we're almost there. We just need to stop Cornelia's GPP in order to pop two prophets in Straussburg and one merchant in Venice...

Mandir in Cornelia and the Statue in Venice?

EDIT: consider spreading Judaism as well, so we can get one more cathedral for the priests?

Bullseye Mucco! :goodjob: Actually Curly Joe is a single stooge. He was the second "Curly" in the Three Stooges. The name Curly Joe was never used in the series. I used it to distinguish the two “Curly”.

Sullla in your last turn set report you said...
Sullla said:
Whoa, hold on there! Don't anybody go bulldozing our cottages in favor of farms just yet. :)
...and I wanted to build two farms in Cornelia BFC in my turn set. So I created a little story using workers named after the Three Stooges bulldozing cottages in favor of farms. Figured I'll blame the Stooges (workers) if you got angry. :) Anyway IIRC I farmed over either two hamlets or a hamlet/village. Either way the two cottages were the least developed. The running to the tundra is the workers went to chopped forest N of Cornelia.

[EDIT] Why I did it? We'll have max available food of 44 at pop 19 (max size) so we'll be able to hire three priests (or three engineers) (or three of whatever specialists) in Cornelia.

If you're going to farm over cottages, use a military unit to pillage them so you get some gold back first.

We need one Prophet, plus any two out of this set: Prophet, Engineer, Merchant.

If you're going to farm over cottages, use a military unit to pillage them so you get some gold back first.

You don't get gold for pillaging inside your own territory. That would be one heck of a cash income loophole.

[EDIT] Fixed BC to AD per T-Hawk keen observation.

1525 AD
Turn continued from last report. I called Mansa to wheel & deal with him.
RB25-AD-1525_Wheel-Deal.JPG

Here's a link to a panorama of our updated world map. Warning it's huge.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/94231/RB25-AD-1525_World-Map.JPG

Awesome! Mansa found all the AI cities for us. :goodjob: Actually his world map is a sweet deal.

I swapped in a Courthouse to build instead of the Hermitage in Lillehammer.

1530 AD
What Caesar demands...?
RB25-AD-1530_Ceasar-Demands.JPG

...is what Caesar gets! Actually the tribute made our relations Cautious from Annoyed. :woohoo:

A stupid Barb Warrior popped up N of Straussburg. Dumbo is on route to squish it. :hammer:

Venice completed a Grocer and starts a Bank; and than I hired a few merchants to increase the probability of Venice popping a GM. Forrest Gump runs home since there's nothing to explore.

1535 AD
Taj Mahal
RB25-AD-1535_Taj-Mahal.JPG

The honor of this GA goes to Tuscany. It's our third city settled. Next GA goes to Straussburg and finally Lillehammer.

Cornelia starts a Hindu Mandir however it's grayed out. I need to build two Hindu Temples to enable it so Cornelia starts a Hindu Temple. Tuscany completed Jewish Monastery and starts a Jewish Missionary. I whipped the Courthouse in Lillehammer.

Squish-A-Barb
RB25-AD-1535_Dumbo-Squished.JPG

Dumbo squished the Barb Warrior.

In other military news, I upgraded both Many-Arrows (Archer) to Merry Man (Longbowman). I renamed Cormeleon (Swordsman) to Captain Hammer and sent him to fortified Lillehammer. I sent Felix (Crossbowman) to fortified Straussburg.

1540 AD
Straussburg completed Grocer and starts a Bank. Lillehammer starts the second Hindu temple.

I promoted Dumbo to Sentry so he can play lookout in the tundra fog and than I see this blight.
RB25-AD-1540_Barb-City.JPG

Dumbo is on route to trample the Barb city.

1545 AD
Constitution -> Democracy.

Cornelia completed Hindu Temple and starts a War Elephant; and I hired a Priest. Tuscany completed Jewish Missionary and starts another. I send the Jewish Missionary to Cornelia to spread the word.

In military news, I upgraded Wonder Boy (Warrior) to a Maceman.

Wheel & Deal
RB25-AD-1545_Wheel-Deal.JPG

Mansa tried to wheel & deal Pig for Ivory and I said no way buddy. I anted the deal by requesting an additional 9 gpt and Mansa accepted. :woohoo: Go figure! The bonehead has Knights so why does he want War Elephants? Anyway it's my gain. Oh, ya!

1550 AD
Cornelia builds Gumbo (War Elephant) and starts Hindu Mandir. Gumbo is on route to help Dumbo trample the northern blight and than to play sentry in the tundra fog. Lillehammer completed Hindu Temple and starts Hermitage.

In military news, I renamed C-C (Warrior) to Aqua Boy (Tuscany) and upgraded him to a Maceman. The stooges delivered 42 hammers and 34 hammers to Cornelia from chopping forests in the tundra N. Our military situation is better. I have a Longbowman in every city with at least one offensive unit fortified in each city. Lillehammer has a mini-stack in case Izzy feels like expanding our way.

Open Borders
RB25-AD-1550_Open-Borders.JPG

I established Open Borders with Caesar. It seems our relations are improving.

That's all folks.

RB25-AD-1550_Barb-City.JPG

Spread Judaism to our cities and Hinduism to Mansa's last city that doesn't has it.

I'm trying to pop a GM in Venice and a GP in Cornelia.

You're up.

[EDIT] Doh! I forgot to attached the saved. Here it is: View attachment 139323

Time is going backwards now?

Democracy now, so the plan is Statue of Liberty of course. It's a Merchant wonder, but I think Cornelia should do it rather than Venice; its GPPs will add to the National Epic, and Cornelia will get it done significantly sooner.

[EDIT] :smoke: [pimp] Galileo44 was telling me the same thing and I didn't catch on. Anyway I fixed my previous reports too.

Democracy for both Statue of Liberty and Universal Suffrage. I, too, agree with you on where to build Statue of Liberty. We have towns popping up around our territory so we may want to convert to Universal Suffrage instead of Representation.

Turn 5 (1575): Our Third Golden Age ends

Turn 6 (1580): Caesar asks us for Nationalism.

Civ4ScreenShot0059-1.jpg

I refuse. I later read that Gusto caved in to Caesar’s demand to please him. I don’t know whether I’ve done good or bad, but we don’t have much to gain or fear from Julius anyway.

Turn 7 (1585): Democracy comes in and I start on Replaceable Parts.

Civ4ScreenShot0060.jpg

Virgil, a Great Artist, is born in Cornelia. He’s our third Great Artist and therefore useless for our goal. I send him south to the borders.
Caesar makes another demand, this time to stop trading with Mali. I refuse again and he becomes annoyed.

Civ4ScreenShot0062.jpg

Turn 8 (1590): Our troops finally raze Teoihuacan, losing two Elephants.

Civ4ScreenShot0065.jpg

The Golden Five:

Civ4ScreenShot0066.jpg

--------------------------------------------

Venice has a 73% chance of generating a Great Merchant halfway during Sullla’s turnset. I have hired two Priest specialists in Straussburg to start towards the two Great Prophets that we still need. We will need to fire most of our specialists in other cities, especially Cornelia and Venice, to prevent them swallowing up GPP.
Virgil is sleeping in Lillehammer, it’s most useful for a Great Work IMO.
Sullla can fire up our Fourth Golden Age already. I don’t think I need to tell you to be careful which Great People you use

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/78327/RB25_-_The_Golden_Five_AD-1600.Civ4SavedGame

yeah, what happened to turns 1 through 4? :crazyeye:

Regarding the two Caesar demands, consider the prices. The demand for Paper was for a cheap (800 beaker), devalued tech. The demand for Nationalism was for an expensive monopoly tech. I agree with our course of action in both cases.

Surplus Great Artist in Lillehammer -- I'd prefer him settled there (it's my city!) rather than a Great Work. With the Hermitage, he makes 24 culture/turn (and more if we ever go to Free Speech) and will make more than a Great Work by the time the game ends. He pays off 3 cash/turn too by settling.

Would he lightbulb anything useful?

Did we revolt to Emancipation? Sulla can decide, but I think it's worthwhile to grow the cottages at Tuscany and Lillehammer faster. Universal Suffrage is probably also a good idea, if we can take the small happiness hit. Free Speech may also be worthwhile; Sulla can run the numbers and compare to Bureaucracy. (Maybe go Free Speech after Cornelia is done using the hammer boost to build the Statue.)

And I think we have to hold off on firing the fourth GA until we have all the people for the 5th. We don't want to use our Engineer now, then end up with two more Prophets and no more Engineers.

Theology (2 turns to research) at the moment:(

I only revolted to Universal Suffrage. I thought we could wait with Emancipation until other civs reach Democracy.
