RB4 - Desert Runner

Ok, I got it. Gee, it's my favorite part of the game, the always exciting post-war infrastructure push!

Lurker comment - make sure you at least wipe out Gandhi first completely. That will cause all of the unhappy Indians in your captured cities to instantly become Persian. I find this a stupid aspect of gameplay... in my last domination game I left France alive after I took them down to one city, and for like 100 turns I still had like 50% unhappy French citizens in Paris. Took out that last city, boom, unhappiness gone.

Inherited turn. Wow we ARE big! War weariness isn't crippling right now, mostly because we have tons of happiness resources. Still, I switch a couple cities to theaters before their current projects finish. I think we can finish off Ghandi completely, although it is costing us a lot to do it. We are at 60% science but bleeding 83gpt! We are researching economics but, unfortunately, Alex alreday has it, so we won't get the free merchant. Hey, look at this! The diplo screen shows how mush cash the other civs have to offer now! Cool! I'm liking this new patch although I am a little worried about some of the combat changes that have been made... In any case, we have the Taj Mahal due in 4 turns which should help us keep our head above water until Ghandi is finished. We need to be wary of Peter - despite the fact that we are at war together he's still only at +1, and if he decided to attack us it would be trouble.

01_screwy.JPG
I tried to take a shot of the diplo screen here, but irfanview is still giving me headaches. This is all I got.

And look! They are using a different symbol for gold now! (Not that I got this pic either...)

BT - We get three border expansions, and the Indian catapult in Burgundian attacks one of peter's knights. I just notice that the only reason it seems like war weariness is in control is our 20% luxury rate. Yeah, we need to end this war.

Turn 1 - 1390 AD - Moving troops into position. I don't think I'll be able to take the last Indian city as Merzbow suggested - right now the war weariness is hurting us more than any residual unhappiness will, methinks. I'm starting several markets in our commerce-high cities to help with the cash bleed.

Turn 2 - 1400 AD - Our troops are ready to begin bombardment next turn.

BT - Our stack is mauled by a catapult. Ugh. In better news, we pop a great engineer in Persepolis. I'll get back to him. Peter signed Peace with Ghandi, so his knights won't be helping us.

Turn 3 - 1410 AD - One of our war elephants in the stack has enough to promote to medic, which well help a lot with that collateral damage. I start bombarding the walls of Burgundian while the units heal. The Great engineer can be a super specialist, can help discover replaceable parts, or I can wait until next turn and see what sorts of wonders he can rush. I press space bar - Taj Mahal due next turn.

BT - 1420 AD - We finsih economics and the Taj Mahal is finished in Persepolis. We are still bleeding -20 gpt at 50% science and 20% luxuries.

Turn 4 - 1420 AD - There are no wonders available to rush (other than national wonders). Hmmm, what to do with the great engineer? I could rush the Forbidden Palace, but it is only going to take 12 turns to complete anyway. I'm a little unsure of what to do with him. I need to start a new research project - lets see if there are any nice upcoming wonders... Statue of Liberty is 2 techs away, and that would be really nice. Ok, I start research on constitution with the idea of getting democracy next and then rushbuilding the statue of liberty. This can be vetoed on the next turn. I'm having some really bad luck on some combat rolls here - elephant loses to a catapult in the open field??? ARGH. I'm beginning to wonder if I will be able to take Burgundian at all... Bombard it down to zero... We should revolt to Free Market after the golden age ends.

Turn 5 - 1430 AD - There's no way I can take the city this turn. I'll have to wait a few more turns for a few macement to show up. Urgh.

BT - Two longbows attack our stack in the open field - both die on our elephants, promoting them. This is going to be a very close battle when it happens...

Turn 6 - 1440 AD - Lots of infrastructure projects finishing... Still waiting for maces to show up.

BT - 2 markets and a bank finish, bringing us from -19gpt to +3. Two of the defenders in Burgundian leave to kill units in the open field, and I think that presents me with an opportunity!

Turn 7 - 1450 AD - Here's the game: 2 macemen, 2 elephants, 5 cats vs. 3 longbows and a crossbow. It will be close...

03_stack.jpg
Four real attackers vs. four defenders...

4 suicide catapults! Attack! One maceman loses against the odds! Uh oh, that means my last catapult will have to attack for real!

05_odds.jpg
I had the odds, but not the luck

Take the city with my LAST AVAILABLE UNIT, a catapult!

04_Burgundian.jpg
It doesn't get much closer than that!

Dial up Ghandi - PEACE! Whew, It's finally over!

06_peace.jpg

Ghandi and I have peace, for now...

I drop lux rate to zero, science rate back up to 70% now and still making 3 gpt. Unfortunately, Ghandi plopped another city and we STILL don't have iron!! We'll need to attack him again after a short buildup and finish him off. It's amazing that we don't have horses either. No iron, no horses, but 6 coppers!!! I start the Heroic Epic in Pasargadae. It is our second best producer after the Capitol and will start beefing up our stretched-thin military as soon as it can.

Turn 8 - 1460 AD - Things seem so quiet now! Tons of infrastructure going on, and we are pulling out of our economic hole quite nicely. Banks, universities, markets, and courthouses going up all over the place during our golden age. Constitution due next turn.

Turn 9 - 1470 AD - Constitution comes in, democracy due in 5. Remember to rush the statue of liberty when it comes in.

Turn 10 - 1480 AD - Very quiet. Infrastructure projects.

Summary - We are doing quite well, although it's too bad the Indian wars still didn't net us any iron. The gun powder era is upon us, and we will have to see to our defenses. After we rush the Statue of Liberty we should head towards riflemen, I think. With no horses, we will be on the defensive during the age of cavalry. We can build the Oxford University now - check and see where our best science city is and stick it there ASAP. Other than that, we are on the way to an easy space or diplo win, I think. Conquest and Domination are still very viable possibilites as well, if we choose that route. Personally, I think a domination win would be fun.

The only place we aren't light-years ahead of the AI is in power - we will want to pump troops out of Pasargadae once the Epic finishes. There is lots of good info available in these screens after the patch!

09_demo.jpg
Notice we have 3 times the GNP of any other civ!

Here is the save!

Note: In that combat log above, I had bombarded that longbow down to 62 HP (3.1) strength, and yet it was still doing full damage to me. My guess it that the chance of winning the round is also based on its original 6.0 strength. This patch is a huge change! In 1.09 I would have had around 95%+ chance to win that combat. I don't know what the verdict will be on this, but it is a huge change, and certainly favors higher-tech units and diminishes siege units considerably.

Turn 208 (1480 AD)(IT)
Everything looks fine, i get ready for ten turns of quite infrastrucal and economic build-up, without forgetting to commission atleast some new units.

Turn 209 (1490 AD)
Pasargadae finishes the heroic epic and gets to build a warelephant in 1 turn...nice :-)
Some banks get finished to and our income makes a nice jump, if only short.

Turn 210 (1500 AD)
Our golden age ends and so do the times of positive net-income. The next turns contained nothing noteworthy, so we'll skip those.

Turn 213 (1515 AD)
Democracy is researched and Persepolis begins constructing the Statue of Liberty right away, using our GE to hurry it halves the time to build it, it still takes 12 turns, though.
I start research on Replacable Parts.
Had to leave the game for an hour and forgot to change our civics as a result.

Turn 214 (1520 AD)
Revolution to Emancipation and Free Market.
Emancipation will significantly speed up the development of our newly founded cottages and Free Market gives us an extra trade route, which is better then no bonus at all.

Turn 215 (1525 AD)
Another really quite turn.

Turn 216 (1530 AD)
see above

Turn 217 (1535 AD)
Replacable Parts are discovered and research on Gunpowder is started.
No reasonably fair trade for it was possible and researching only costs 2 turns.

Turn 218 (1540 AD)
The last turn of my regency sees the return of positive income, but nothing more.

The Forbidden Palace finishes next turn, so our economic situation should brighten further. The next player should probably focus on military, because Alex seems to be building up a bit more than necessary.

Nice work Hiob. I'm glad my plan for the GE worked out - it's going to be great to have the Statue of Liberty! And +gold after such a protracted war sounds like great stuff.

Going nicely towards domination ! We'll probably have to wait for Rifles ,maybe even infantry, to go after Peter ( definitely have to neutralize Cossacks) but Alex is fair game. Would be a shame though to go to war with him after all the trouble we went to to get him on our good side.

I will not be able to play my turn until tomorrow evening or next day (January 2nd). If that delay is too long, you can skip me.

For the actual turn, should I switch to Vassalage and start building troops, continue with infrastructure, or do somthing else?

Lurker's comment: The patch changelog explicitly mentioned that the damage inflicted is based on full strength, but the chance to win a round is still based on relative modified strengths as it was before. In case you hadn't noticed, the actual odds of winning are displayed at the top of the pre-combat dialogue now :)

Take your time and don't stress yourself! As long as I know that people know they're up, everything's fine. :)

I cannot really comment on this without having taken a look at the save; just do what you feel our empire needs most at the moment.

Happy new year, team!

Thank you.

Here are my turns. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to take the screenshots (and upload them over dial-up).

1540AD (turn 0) - Our empire looks very well-maintained. We need more workers to improve newer cities and build lumbermills and (later) railroads, but everything else looks very good. I consider buying Corporatin from Alex, but he wants 2 techs for it. Since he is a potential enemy (we'll have to kill him to get domination), I decide against it, especially since he wants Printing Press that nobody else has.

1545AD (1) - Gunpowder -> Rifling (5) It's alsmost time to start second round of wars.
Pasargadae Elephant -> Worker (2); Bombay Forbidden Palace -> Univercity (29) (production will increase when city grows, food is more important for now)
Orenburg wants to join us so much they started rioting.
Several workers start construction of lumbermills.

1550AD (2) - Ghuzz Catapult -> worker(3); Bacra Barracks -> Grocer(12) (averts possible health problems)

1555AD (3) - Pasagadae Worker -> worker(2); Susa University -> Hindu Monastery(3) (temporary science improvement and option to train missionaries later); Lahoe Library -> Market(75) (could improve if switched to max-hammers configuration)

1560AD (4) - Ghuzz Worker -> Hindu Missionary(2) (will be done when riflemen can be trained); Tarsus Elephant -> Missionary(2); Gordum Univercity -> Hindu Missionary(2); Madras Forge -> Granary (3); Delhi Bank -> Grocer (9) (to take advantage of shrine)

1565AD (5) - more infrastructure builds. Troops are moved in position to finish off India. Most city raider troops are removed from MP duty and sent to Indian border, while Archers are sent to replace them in backwards areas.

1570AD (6) - Rifling -> Corporation (2) (improves income and goes towards assembly line)
Alex attacked Hatty! That's perfect news. Not only do we no longer have to worry about an attack from him, both #2 and #3 will be weakened by this war, leaving them easy prey for us.
2 City Raider III macemen are upgraded to Riflemen, while less experienced macemen will be given a chance to become City Raider III before being upgraded.
I start training first riflemen.

1575AD (7) It's time to finish off the Indians. War Weariness is a lot more painfull than I expected, so I have to put culture slider up to 10% right away. However, India is down to 2 cities and should fall quickly. At Yakutsk we have 2 riflemen (city raider III), 2 catapults, 2 elephants and a maceman against Pikeman, Crossbowman, longbowman, maceman and a catapult. At Jaipur the attack force will arrive next turn.

IBT: I am an idiot. Burgundian was left protected by a single elephant, but it was only 3 spaces away from Yakutsk and Indian border was next to it. So when a nearby crossbowman failed to take the city, maceman from Yakutsk came over to finish the job.

Greeks capture Byblos.

1580AD (8) Corporation -> Chemistry (3) (on the way to Steam Power, on the way to Assembly Line and Railroad)
At Yakutsk, City Raider III Rifleman kills longbowman, Maceman kills Pikeman, capturing city, 4 Workers and 155$.
Percepolis completes Statue of Liberty -> Market(3)

IBT: Hatty asks for help against the Greeks. I refuse, because we don't have an army yet.

1585AD (9) We bombard Burgandian and Jaipur.

IBT: Peter Culture-bombs Orenburg. That doesn't do much damage, but prevents the city from flipping to us.
Indian Catapult attacks our stack outside Jaipur.

1590AD (10) Attack on Burgundian:
Catapult bombards defences down to 33%. CRIII rifleman kills maceman, wounded CRIII rifleman kills Crossbowman, CRII catapult kills catapult, capturing city and 5$.
City lost all buildings besides granary, so losing the city was a very expensive mistake.

Attack on Jaipur (protected by 3 longbows and a pike):
2 catapults bombard defences down to 10%. Barrage I catapult suicides v. longbow, damages 1 longbow and the pike; Rifleman kills a longbow; CRII Maceman dies to longbow (got unlucky); Elephant dies to Pike; Elephant kills Longbow; CRII axe kills longbow and I am 1 unit short of taking the city.

I am sorry about all the mistakes I've made (mainly losing Burgundian). I guess I got careless when seeing how far ahead we are.

About plans for the future, feel free to replace all infrastructure builds with riflemen in cities that have barracks. I would have done that myself, but wanted to leave the decision up to you. For research, I'd go for Assembly Line (Pentagon, Infantry and Factories), followed by Railroads.

For attack targets, Louis could be attacked soon if you direct newly built troops to his border, and upgrade all axes in border cities to Rifles (after promoting them to city raider), but Peter looks like a better target because that would shorten the border we'd have to defend, while attacking Louis would lengthen it.

Good thinking to go to war again. I think we need Assembly Line too before we take on Peter's Cossacks. And accidents can happen, of course :).
Which civics are we in now by the way ?

Nice to see us on the offensive so soon again. Don't worry about Burgundian; our empire is in such a great shape that it doesn't matter. :D

Alex at war with Hatty? That's GREAT news. :goodjob:

I guess my job now is to kill of Gandhi and prepare for the war against Peter (does he have cossacks?). I hope I can set up the next player to declare war.

Got it.

-Kylearan

Peter doesn't have cossacs yet. (Alex is the only one with Military Tradition.) My only worry about Alex attacking Hatty is the speed with which he captured her first city. We should probably send a couple units into the war zone to check what kind of army he has. (We have Open Borders with both sides.)

Our civics, if I remember correctly, are Representation (good with Statue of Liberty), Free Speech (lots of cash), Emancipation, Free Market (probably should change to State Property when we get Communism and when our empire gets bigger) and Organized Religion.

Talking about civics, is it time for Free Religion? "Our" religion isn't controlled by us and our new cities don't have it anyway.
