Rubberjello's motto is: "When in doubt - STEAL IT!"

@Charis. I would like to be a part of the shadow Communism game, but I've played this era far too often in Republic to be even remotely interested in joining the Republic shadow game.

I'm sorry, but this takes a lot more time than I thought at the start! We are at war with the Germans and the Zulu and I have to think how to proceed! I need at least 12 hours more, because I have other things to do today as well.

Oh my, I wonder if that meant the lone archer attacked?
:rotfl:

Then Biz asked Shaka to sign his own death warrant?
And all you wanted was some peace and quiet to consolidate the mess you got. Take your time -- it does sound like there's a lot to consider here!

Shaka has like six cities near us and a hamlet way out east, with Hlobane, Isandhwala and Mpondo on our border. We're "strong" to them. Mpondo has one of their two sources of iron. They had horses and iron, no salt last we knew, so Knight and MDI are possible. Actually, Hlobane has BOTH horses and iron, the former pillageable on first turn, so that's a nice objective.

Charis

IHT: I count 5 resisting cities. All of them have military within their borders, be it not enough the quell the resistance quickly. Economically I see that we only have 352 gold and make 3 gpt. With science at 60% it still takes very long to get Metallurgy. I decide to drop science to 0% and now we make 127 gpt. I cancel the ROP with Scandinavia, which also had a payment of 4 gpt attached to it.

IT: The Germans decide to ruin their reputation and attack us while we have a ROP  The archer could do no damage whatsoever to our pike in Bursa.

Turn 1 (350 AD) In Zabala and Zuburria resistance is quelled.

I try to make a gpt deal with the Vikings. But it appears that we betrayed the Zulu. Our rep is shot All the more reason to think about stealing things.

Luxury to 0%. Innsbruck, Krems, Lienz and Villach need more troops to make the people happy.
I pay Osman of the Ottomans 350 for a Military Alliance against Germany  .

IT: Woops! The Zulu join forces with the Germans against us. Sumeria and the Ottomans sign a MA vs Germany. Arabia and the Ottomans sign a MA vs Germany. Bruck deposed our government again :( All other resistance has ended.

Turn 2 (360 AD) World war it is then... Worried about a possible alliance of the Otto's with the Zulu, I try to sign a MA with the Otto's. But they want 17 gpt and al our cash. Our troops were getting rusty anyway, our knights go to visit Zululand.

IT: A Zulu knight kills a musket in Basra. The Vikings and the Germans sign a MA vs Arabia.

Turn 3 (370 AD) Our knight army kills a pike and and impi in Isandlhwana. A vet knight kills the last impi and the city is ours. I figure that the best way to prevent flips is to raze the city. We have 4 slaves, 36 gold and extra ivory as a bonus. A vet knight kills a longbow and an elite knight kills wounded knight near Basra, no promotion.

IT: We lost a furs deal. The Hittites and Germans get a MA against Arabia.

Turn 4 (380 AD) Vienna riots. I can prevent rioting of the other cities and lux goes to 10%.

A pike pillages the Zulu's (only?) horse tile. An elite knight kills a pike in Hlobane and we have a leader named Wurmser. An elite MDI lets a knight retreat that block other knight to invade Hlobane. But one knight is killed by an impi. The other knight has more success. Still the city is not ours yet.

IT: No counter-attack from the Zulu. The Hittites want to allie vs the Arabs. I decline.

Turn 5 (390 AD) The leader creates another army. An elite MDI and elite knight attack Hlobane, kill two impi and raze the city. The city was also approached by the Sumerians who are not at war with them??? Basra rushes a temple for 1 citizen and also in Zabalam and Akshak (2 cizitens).

IT: The Hittites and Ottomans sign a MA vs Germany :)

Turn 6 (400 AD) Troops march to Ulundi (a stack of 5 knights and a pike). Other troops scatter around the empire.

IT: The Zulu and Ottomans get a MA vs us :o This cancels our silk deal with the Ottomans. The Germans land a knight north of Kisurra. Sumeria finishes Smith.

Turn 7 (410 AD) I have to prevent a lot of rioting and luxury goes to 20%. The German knight is killed by one of our own.

IT: Scandinavia and the Otto's get a MA vs Germany. Our pike defending the iron is attacked by two Ottoman longbows and is killed.

Turn 8 (420 AD) Two elite knights killed, one retreat and Ulundi is razed. Since we don't want to finish before Fascism, I make peace with the Zulu and get 56 gold and 4 gpt.

A knight kills the German archer and a new pike comes to defend the spot. Chemistry and 150 gold give me Astronomy from the Hittites. All civs that want to talk only have non-required techs for the Industrial Age over us.

IT: Now the Zulu get a MA with the Otto's to destroy the Germans. The pike on the iron spot succesfully defends a knight attack.

Turn 9 (430 AD) Germany wants to talk. Eh... they want to PAY for peace :o I double-check to see if we have a MA against them, but no... They don't have a lot to offer though, because I don't care for the non-reuqired techs and they have no other tech over us. World map and 12 gold for us, peace for them. As if nothing hapened, I trade Ivory and 100 gold for Silks with Bismarck. He turns polite :p. The whole world except us is at war with the Germans. All because of one longbow!

But I underestimated the effect of war hapiness and lux still has to go to 30%. A mini-SOD goes to a mountain-top near Istanbul.

IT: A lot of Ottoman troops approach our borders! Only one knight between them though. The Sumerians found Marad on the spot where I wanted to settle as well, one turn later :( This is the former Zulu iron/spices site.

Turn 10 (440 AD) A knight army and 2 normal knights manage to raze Istanbul.

Metallurgy and Physics is known in the world (Vikings, Sumeria, Hittites and possibly the Ottomans).

IT: The Ottomans come with about 10 units in the direction of Bursa. They also kill two knights that were out in the open after the siege of Istanbul.

Turn 11 (450 AD) Krems riots. Three knights, a longbow, a warrior and one knight army manage to kill 3 knights, a red-lined spear and 4 longbows. Arabia know Physics, but not Metallurgy. Still I think that it is best to wait for peace with the Ottomans. I'm sure that they want to talk to us soon!

We have two armies in Vienna. both are there to be filled with cavalry. I also created a settler in order to take the spices south of Basra. That spot is gone though. Lastly I'd go for a quick peace with the Ottomans and a possible cheap tech deal.

I can imagine that you are a bit confused about all the MA's flying around. This is the current state (the Ottomans really hate the Germans!!):

RBC7worldwar.jpg

-The Sumerians, Zulu and Vikings have Physics and Metallurgy over us, plus 5 no-required techs. Their military is about the same size as ours
-The Arabs have Physics and are about the same size
-The Germans have no important techs over us and outnumber us
-The Hittites are backward but equally strong
-The Ottomans are equally strong but won't talk

450 AD save

That report set a record for the number of times I said "Oh my goodness!" reading a SG post!

Sheeesh! My head is swimming trying to keep track of what is up, like I need an instant replay. Talk about a scrappy world (oops, wait, wrong game) Let me get this straight...

- Germans trash their rep with a sneak attack DURING ROP with a lone archer
- Somehow our rep is shot too? (No matter in this particular world)
- Ottomans become our allies, then almost immediately sell their soul for cash and ally against us. Later they sell whatever is left of their soul for another alliance vs Germany?
- Our biggest recent enemy (Sumeria) becomes our ally
- We got a ldr and now have TWO empty armies waiting for cav?
- Our OWN city now with no cultural pressure flips a SECOND time?
- Quietly in the midst of all this, Zulus lose fully one HALF of their core to razings, and Ottomans see lovely Istanbul razed? :hammer:

With all the flippings, and no troops to hold them, I think you made the right call razing each of the cities you did. However, we'll want to keep in mind that as Fascsists when we do grow a larger army we'll want to capture as many cities as we can for the support.

> The whole world except us is at war with the Germans. All
> because of one longbow!

:rotfl: Wowza, I think that longbow was actually carrying a NUKE!

> The Sumerians found Marad on the spot where I wanted to
> settle as well, one turn later This is the former Zulu iron/spices
:saiyan: Franz Charis' patience with this nation is growing exceedingly thin. I pity them on my next turn, if they live that long :P

Sounds like a good two-fer deal possible soon if not now, getting Metallurgy then using it for Physics from Arabs - alas, rep problems may avoid this or may require the tech(s) to come at the peace table. Peace soon when we can get something sounds good. With the Ottomans and Germans the two next biggest power over us, letting them slug it out while we ready for cav and Industrial era would be sweet.

Bede <-- UP, may the wisdom of the Irish monk guide us!
Rubber Jello <-- ON Deck

Great turn, well played! (and rather exciting :P )

Got it

Bruck gone again and my robes weren't finished!!! It's cold in these Western Isles.

Guess I'll exchange my tattered sacramental garb for my armor, a lance and a horse

That's a point that I didn't consider during the wars. But we are in luck. Two cities already replaced former Zulu sites and I'm sure that something will come instead of Istanbul as well. That does spare us the cost of settlers :)

EDIT: I mixed things up. An archer triggered the world war, not a longbow :)

After a careful review of the Chronicles to date Bede orders a report from the Foreign Minister

The Satanic Sultan won't negotiate

Gilgamesh the Fur Thief:
Techs: Republic, Printing Press, Music Theory, Economics, Navigation, Physics and Metallurgy
Trade goods: Furs, Incense, Spices for home consumption only
Resources: Lacks only Horses and will pay up to 18gpt for ours but only 100g straight up and claims we cheated Ragnar (Huh?)
Treaties: Allied with Ozzie in war with Otto

Ragnar the Viking Sealord
Techs: All of the above
Trade goods: Dyes and Gems for local consumption only
Resources: Also lacks horses and will pay up to 17gpt but nothing straight up and claims to have been cheated in the past
Treaties: At war with Arabs and allied with Ozzie against Otto

Abu the Heir of Mohammed
Techs: all of the above except Metallurgy
Trade Goods: Spices and gems for home consumption
Resources: Lacks all the critical ones (Horses, Iron, Saltpeter)
Treaties: At war with Hittites and allied with Ozzie against Otto

Shaka the Poor:
Techs: All
Trade Goods: None (Well done previous Feudal Lords)
Resources: None (Kudos Again)
Treaties: Allied with Ozzie against Otto

Mursilis of the Hittites
Techs: Laggard
Trade Goods: Furs for home consumption
Resources: Has everything he needs
Treaties: At war with Abu and allied with Ozzie against Otto

Bede concludes that Otto's bull-headed declaration of war ruined our foreign relationships Nobody trusts us to deliver on promises. They refer to our mistreatment of Ragnar and Shaka as evidence of our perfidy, yet I can find no record of such defalcations in our history scrolls All I can think of is that by declaring war Otto severed the trade routes that pass through our territory and the dumbkopfs blame it on us!!

Mein Got in Himmel!! What a spider web and our realm sits right in the middle of IT!

Gilgamesh the Fur Thief is safe from the wrath of Bede as our Treaty with him has nine decades to run
The treaty with Abu has eight to go so he is safe too though I can't think of any reason to battle with him other than pure cussedness (Bede, remember your vows) Shaka the scandal monger has 16 decades to go on his peace treaty (Too bad. I'd really like to clean out that nest of Imps south of Salzburg) and Otto has 18

Looks like the wrath of Bede shall focus on Ozzie the Obsteperous

Bede now turns to the map scrolls and a tear runs down his cheek as he contemplates those lovely furs in Bruck Being nosy he sticks his nose inside Bruck Gil has built a Library, Courhouse and Bruck U in the interval That's a couple hundred shields worth of production in just a few short years, and Gil still has ~600g in his treasury The west is vulnerable to more culture flips but the towns are too small for whip applications (not even a birch rod) The homeless settler could go on the hill south of Krems Has a handy floodplain, river access and there are lots of unused grassland and mountain tiles handy If nothing else the new town could build workers for adding to our other cities as appropriate or needed or he could go east to pull in some Turk territory but the proximity of size 8 Izmit makes that the higher risk decision Even higher risk would be trying to poach the rubble of Istanbul

Shift a few citizens around to pull in a temple at Lienz in 5 A border expansion there in 9 will give a nice buffer against Ozzies city of Izmit With a little more development on the surrounding mountains, mining the irrigated deserts and adding a Courthouse ought to raise net shields to 15 Raise lux tax to 40% to get Krems back to work

Chapter 1 460AD

Manuever knights around to build a Crusader Force in Bursa and upgrade some pikes and spears on the eastern front Kill an unprotected archer heading for Bursa and fortify army and knight above the rubble of Istanbul Ozzie has a small force of two longbows, one spear, one MDI and one knight moving towards Basra so I position to create a killing ground on the floodplain east of Basra and protect the resources Ozzie is willing to talk so I give an ear He offers us money but we need Metallurgy more He'll include Metallurgy for 1200g straight up or 80gpt Think I'll call on the neighbors and see if anybody else will give us a more favorable deal There ain't no such animal On a return visit to Ozzie he'll throw in a slave As his current counterattack is pretty puny I think I'll pass

Chapter 2 470AD
Shaka and Ragnar form an alliance against Arabia and the Zulus join the fun against Abu Osman's pathetic longbows are wiped out by the garrison at Bursa Bede pays a call on Osman and the price for Metallurgy has dropped 400g to 60gpt If it gets to 50 I think he has a deal

Chapter 3 480AD

Osman sends a single warrior onto the killing ground in front of Bursa and the Archduke dispatches him with an assist from an arriving treb Osman has moved a couple of longbows out of Izmit towards Landeck Move a couple of knights into the Landeck garrison and the musketmen fortify on the heights. Once again Osman's troops are forced to approach on the flatlands where they will be easy prey for our gallant knights On the domestic front Salzburg is proving to be intractable. Fiddle as much as I can I can't get the spt up to 20 Even with the FP corrupt officials steal away that last shield In a desperation move I change the bank to a colosseum hoping blood and circuses will satisfy their greedy little hearts Osman (Ozman?) is still holding out for his 60gpt Abu still lacks Metallurgy and his treasury is miniscule so he's unlikely to buy it or learn it anytime soon A little more Turkish slaughter may soften Ozman's pursestrings

Der and Kissura grow and riot The whip is coming out soon to finish those damn temples

Chapter 4 490AD

The wandering settler founds Breclev on the hill south of Krems

Ozzie builds a stronger counterattack in front of Bursa but drops a longbow into the killing ground The treb softens him up and a knight takes him out The force aprroaching Landeck now consists of an MDI, a knight and two bows The MDI sits in the plain all by his lonesome waiting for our knights and is slaughtered The gallant Archduke takes on the knight/longbow combo on the plain in front of Izmit absorbs a few arrows and whips the knight Shaka has dropped a wandering worker right in front of Bursa forcing Osman's forces to take the long way 'round

Greedy Ozzie still holds out for his full 60gpt for Metallurgy What's he going to say when we take Izmit and Kafa?

Chapter 5 500AD

Ozzie attacks Bursa and takes out a musket just as the reppledepple produces another one He now has his knight force exposed on the plains in front of Bursa waiting for Mack's Marauders

The treb in Landeck moves onto the hill and softens up Ozzies bows. Two knights gallop out of Landeck and eliminate them

The treb in Bursa softens up the MDI on the Bursa floodplain and the reliable John takes him out The follow on knight eliminates the Turkish knight Mack's Marauders eliminate the other immediate threat to Bursa and refortify the heights There is a lone knight on the mountain above the plain but he'll have to come off his perch to be any threat Move a second musket onto the iron hill as insurance Ozzie still won't come down in his price for Metallurgy but with the elimination of his counterforce Kafa will soon be ours and Landeck starts on a settler to build on the rubble of Istanbul

The fiddling with Salzburg finally works and the cheating Salzbugians are now at net 20spt

On the downside of the ledger the western marches are full of smoke Even though the towns haven't grown they are in full riot mode For some reason they think the Austrians are cruel oppressors It's time to hunt up some lux deals much as I hate to do it and entangle us with our scrappy neighbors Otto will sell us some wine for 100g and Ivory or 6gpt and Ivory Still a little wary of another rep hit from broken trade routes I pay him the Ivory and 100g up front and hope the war in the East goes well

Chapter 6 510AD

The Turkish knight attacks our defender on the hill and dies and a musket promotes to vet His longbow moves into the Landeck killing field The treb softens him up and the waiting knight dispatches him The town just east of Bischofshofen has shrunk to pop1 and the victorious knight goes to investigate further Knights from Salzburg move out to join him

Ozzie has moved a knight out of Zululand to the SW of Bursa Bring 'em on Ozzie

Knights and the treb move out towards Kafa

Ozzie still wants the full price for Metallurgy but the trading opportunities for Physics still exist with Otto and Abu

Chapter 7 520AD

Osman has moved some more bows out of Izmit and Kafa and a Pike/Spear pair are heading for Kafa
The city to the east of Bischhofshofen is defended by a spear and knights move out of Landeck and Salzburg to cut off any new defenders

The treb and Mack's Marauders move into position at Kafa after two knights eliminate the reinforcements heading for Kafa The knights lose two hp apiece but survive The regular knight coming from Zululand has moved into position to attack Bursa His hitpoints of 3 and attack value of 4 are facing 13 hitpoints and defense values of 17 I don't need a calculator to forecast the probable outcome It's tempting to hit him with the MDI waiting on the iron hill but I resist the temptation

Ozzie's price has dropped to 55gpt for peace and metallurgy Bede asks God for guidance and decides to press on

Chapter 8 530AD

Ozzie moves a lone spear towards Basra and shifts his expeditonary force to the defense of Kafa Too little too late you satanic sultan Izmit is defended by a musket so the knights pass it by for now and move onto to Denizli

Gil the FurStealer has a couple of Enks wandering around the SW corners

The assault on Kafa begins with an ineffective bombard. An elite knight charges in and eliminates a pike Mack's Marauders follow up and capture the city. The knights at Bursa move in to support the garrison Ozman's counterattack consists of three longbows and a knight

Ozzie will now meet our price for Metallurgy so I sign the Peace Treaty and hope to sell Metallurgy to Bismarck for Physics Otto wants Metallurgy and 220g for Physics so I move on to Abu. The greedy princeling wants iron, horses, saltpeter, money and Metallurgy so I head back to see the friendly Chancellor He'll do the deal for 100g Done

Now I get to worry about Gil. There's a turn to run on the Peace Treaty and I hope he doesn't call to renegotiate as I don't want to face that problem at the moment. There's not enough force in the NW to take him out of Bruck and the wandering Enks are a threat to the homeland worker force

Chapter 9 540AD

Otto and Shaka have come to terms

Ozman beats the settler to the rubble of Istanbul and founds Riza Although the resistance has ended in Kafa the poulation stays on a starvation diet and a temple is whipped cutting the city from seven to four I move the settler on to Kafa as there is some open ground and gems waiting to be claimed not far from Kafa on the border with Abu's little ville of Aden The little town will be exposed to cultural pressure form Anatalya to the SE but it's something to ponder

The Knight force aimed at Denizli executes a counter march to the west and the workforce in the NE trims up the territory around Lienz and Bischhofshofen

Chapter 10 550AD

Not one to miss a trick Gil shows up right on the button, expected but far from welcome, and wants to re-up the peace treaty I grit my teeth and agree as I don't think we're ready to take him on quite yet He'll keep crossing our territory wandering back and forth to Bruck so I hope my successor can force him to declare war He's got iron and saltpeter and Military Tradition in hand and wants our horses for MilTrad. I don't want to mount his invasion force so I pass on that offer

Meanwhile Kafa gets its temple and starves down to 3

The West Riding still looks very vulnerable to massive culture flip Bruck keeps expanding its borders and is putting heavy pressure in all directions There is a force of knights in and around Zabalam The meandering Enks wander around in the south The garrisons in the south are in shape to hold their own but have no offensive capability Gil has powerful friends and Austria stands alone Threatening Gil is better left to my successor

Some food for thought: go to war with Abu. He has no cities threatening the homeland and Aden sits exposed and lonely (The now quiescent volcano might give one pause) The settler in Kafa can fill the gap once Aden falls to the Marauders and the border expansion at Kafa will bring some lovely gems into our sphere of influence. Just the thing to decorate the bridles of our Hussars and pacify our somewhat disorder-prone populace. He has no way to build an effective counter attacking force as he lacks one crucial technology (Metallurgy) and a critical resource (Horses) Although he does have Crusaders from the Knights Templar wonder I don't think an enhanced sword every five turns willl avail him much against our Knights Abu is currently at war with the Germans, the Scandinavians, the Hittites and the Zulu Shaka's regiments will provide an effective blocking force should Abu attempt to drive on our core Ragnar and Shaka are allied against him and he is allied with Ozman against our friend Otto A pause for reflection leads me to think this is a really bad idea Not enough gain for the risk involved Another case of thinking out loud Gil has what we need Although I have to admit a lingering temptation to grab some jewelry (Vanity, Bede, vanity)

The power curve is turning up nicely but our culture is flatlined Germany is emerging as the cutural leader having built the Temple of Artemis and the Temple of Artemis

Bede now passes his marshal's baton to the next leader

Bede,

Great writeup! :goodjob: As a lurker the Foreign Ministry report was a great help to sort out where everyone is at. (Also, I have to love the personna, I went to High School at St. Bede Academy!)

Yeah...the AI cheats. They built cultural buildings and we did not! :D
Got it.

Hmmm....an interesting passage and take on the history of Austria:
"When Italy, France, England, Belgium, North and West Germany, one after another extricated themselves from feudal barbarism during the latter half of the Middle Ages, when industry was developing, trade expanding, the towns thriving and the burghers acquired political importance, one part of Germany lagged behind West European development. Bourgeois civilisation followed the sea coasts and the course of the big rivers. The inland, especially the barren and impassable mountainous regions, remained the seat of barbarism and of feudalism. This barbarism was especially concentrated in the South German and South Slav inland areas. Protected by the Alps from Italian civilisation and by the mountains of Bohemia and Moravia from that of North Germany, these inland countries had the additional good fortune of being the basin of the only reactionary river in Europe. The Danube, far from linking them with civilisation, brought them into contact with a much more vigorous barbarism.

When the great monarchies developed in Western Europe in the wake of bourgeois civilisation, the inland countries of the Upper Danube likewise had to unite in a great monarchy. This was required if only for the needs of defence. Here, in the centre of Europe, the barbarians of all tongues and of all nations associated under the sceptre of the House of Hapsburg. Here they found in Hungary a mainstay of solid barbarism."

Pre-turn Re-read through the volumnous notes of my predecessor. The Arabic city of Aden sounds like a good plan for the Gems. I whip temples in 3 cities in the West Marches.

560 AD (1) Salzburg (Musket->Musket). Graz (MI->Knight) Villach (Temple->Musket) Kisurra (Temple->Musket) Weiz (Temple->Musket) Der (Temple->Musket) Aden is razed (by somebody). I only hope our settler can get there in time.

570 AD (2) Vienna (Knight->Knight) Innsbruck (Knight->Knight) Kufstein (Musket->Musket) Eisenerz (Colosseum->Musket) I gamble and go for a Careful steal of Military Tradition from a faraway neighbor (Germany) and we get it! [dance] Trade Physics to the Hittites for Navigation. Revolt to eventually Monarchy as per the variant rules. We draw a very ugly 7 turn anarchy period. We are going to be at a deficit of -14 gpt during this time.

580 AD (3) Some starvations are going to happen due to our lack of luxes and level 12 cities.

590 AD (4) We are going to get the Gems!

600 AD (5) Summeria and Germany declare peace. Feldkirch is founded on the Gems. The Gems are online immediately and will avert many starvations during this round of anarchy.

610 AD (6) Germany and Arabia sign peace. I have to renew the treaty with the Zulu (no choice!)

620 AD (7) I sure hope the team appreciates me taking the bullet for them with this anarchy round!

630 AD (8) Zzzzzzz

640 AD (9) AKshak and Zabalam BOTH flip to the Sumerians! :( :( :( We now have Monarchy but are near dead broke and 2 cities the poorer. This really sucks. Micro-manage cities back to health, but we are still bleeding money. Upgrade 8 regular Knights to Hussars.

650 AD (10) We can kick off our Golden Age with our Hussars, but we have peace treaties with all of our neighbors right now. I really don't know what we should do next, as there are no Sumerian units wandering our lands that we could ask to kick out. Sumeria has entered the next age.

The Game (650)

That was a good turn apart from a real kick in the teeth that wasn't your fault. I've always pretty much liked the cultural flip idea, but for some reason, with all these C3C games I've just about had all I can stomach of flips. :o

Thanks too for biting the bullet and revolting. Hmmm, iirc flips are more likely during Anarchy?? (Not that we could do anything about it)

Looking at the map, the two that flipped are easy recaptures. Especially now with cav, the Sumerians are gonna get a whoopin' when peace is up! Not just a little whoopin', but a "where did my capital go???!" kinda whoopin'! :hammer:

Hey guys, please post who is up next at the end of your turn.

Charis <-- UP
Aggie <-- On Deck
Bede
Rubber Jello
(mitsho)

Oh?? It's me! "Got it"
Charis

We're doing fine, with some raucously bad pRNG luck seeing TWO cities flip
to Sumeria in same turn. In the medium term we'll want to recapture Zabalam
and Bruck, and Akshak at a minimum, reclaiming our land and hurting the Sumerians.
We could also stand to work (gasp) a small bit on culture :P We have about one *fifth*
the culture of the Germans! By score we're 4th behind Ottomans, Germans and Sumeria
but we have been growing rather steadily for most of the game. In power we're on top,
with a bite into the profile from the flips that will revert when they're captured.
I can see a four prong attack if units sufficed - rear guard, Akshak west, south
at Bad-tibira and south at Marad (razing it) In case of war, getting Germany
and Ottomans to go at it together would be delightful. Overall plan is to consolidate
our "Kingdom" literally during next 4 techs, only warring vs Sumeria (perhaps Vikings)
then go into full gear come Fascism.

We're almost the only nation at peace. We're two techs short of next era, and already
there are Ottomans (with Siphai, boo), Germany, Sumeria, Vikings, and Zulu. Only the
Arabs and Hittites are left with us. Once one of them gets ONE we'll get both with 2-fer.

Ottomans can sell Incense for about cost of lux notch. Sumeria can do nothing for us,
and has 9 turns of peace left. Ragnar is short on iron and horses which we have extra,
has no saltpeter, and no deals. We could bring him to the peace table for tech buy?
Zulu need horses too but 16 left in peace, no deals possible for hard goods.

Peeking inside Vienna is a hoot! THREE unfilled armies waiting for Hussar! :P
Salzburg needs a hill mined for 20spt. Krems needs to grow to hit a useful spt level,
and goes high food for now. We have eight Hussar in production, and have a fair
number of knights to upgrade (15 outside army) once we get some cash.

[0] 650 - We have three choices here as I see it - i) put/keep all key cities on Hussar
and sell saltpeter for the two techs we need for next era, followed by working on
some culture buildings, ii) keep Hussar queue and salt and spend nine FULL turns
cranking military, iii) ignore culture no further and build that. A man other than
Franz Charis may have chosen iii, and perhaps rightly so, but the man's fascination
with the Hussar was extreme and his anger at Sumeria so hot, there would for sure be
blood on his watch! Between options i and ii is simply the question, does more of the
war come now or wait til Fascism?! But if we buy a tech NOW... which one?

Checking military, wow, we're strong compared to Ottomans and Germany, and average
only against our arch-enemy the Sumerians?! Franz cannot let us fail to press our
advantage in military.

IBT - Border expands at Kafa which connects our borders to outlying Feldkirch.
Ottomans start Shakespeare.

[1] 660 - Ah, we already HAVE 9 Hussar?! Sweet! With our lesser #cities and the
swap to Monarchy, we're for the only time in game above our support limit.
One of the armies starts to get filled with Hussar.
IBT - Sumeria and Zulu gang up on Arabia. Franz gets even hotter...
Vikings start Newtons and Shakespeare, Arabs start ST too.

[2] 670 - No new techs for Arabs or Hittites, we continue to build war machine.
With two armies filled, Franz LONGS for a Golden Age.... He eyes Stavanger of
the Vikings, defended by a mere spear. Gosh, hitting Sumerians in mid-stride of
GA has a very nice appeal to it!
IBT - Hitties and Germany come to peace. Sumerian CAV runs into our land.

[3] 680 - The red hotline phones start ringing off the hook - Sumerian cav is
in our land. Franz demands, uncategorically and unmercifully that if he did
not surrender himself immediately it would be as an act of war against our
peaceful nation! It's not 'move or war' yet, so he just says "ya, ya, whatever"
We move all possible troops into position vs Sumerians. We update all vet knights,
leaving only elite.

Sumeria is seen to have rifles already, and Franz is tired of waiting for the whole
planet to have rifles before our Hussar see action. He is also starting to think that
the laggard AI may never get the needed techs, and with war coming soon, let's tie down
one potential foe. Also, if we do WELL vs Sumeria, do we want Steam/Nationalism for
peace or ToG/Magnetism? He talks to Vikings to renegotiate peace. He's actually up
to doubtful just for horses and iron. Toss in ToG and Magnetism, and what will it
cost? Hmmm, 85gpt for both. If I threw in our saltpeter, just 54gpt. That would
limit our ability to reinforce the front with more Hussar and Muskets, but it would
also let us make some cheap MP unit for defense and build some cultural buildings.
Also, Vikings could break the deal or we might buy some salt -- It's an odd way to
prepare for a big war, but... I sell our only saltpeter. This will allow us to start
research on Nationalism too. Throw in RoP and it's 51gpt. Done! We're now industrial.

Vikings/Zulu have no Industrial techs, Sumerians have Nationalism, Steam AND Medicine,
as do Germans. Ottomans have Nationalism and Steam, and extra salt.

We do leave decent forces including Mack's Knight army on western border -- I just
don't trust our 'friends' to the West. IBT - Not much, cav moves forward, not back.

[4] 690 - How many little units will we want, anyway? Making Knights now are only 30g
to upgrade to Hussar, but we can build Pikeman too, for cheap MP and defense.
Let's see we have 21 muskets, 13 low end defenders, 31 K/Hus, and 23 cities.
That means another ten or dozen cheap defenders would be useful come Fascism.
We tell the cav to leave, he gives one more yada-yada response?!
IBT Arabs like everyone else, are working on Shakespeare's theatre.

[5] 700 - Franz is fuming beyond believe now, and with unimaginable terror prepared
and ready to unleash on the Sumerians, he DEMANDS they leave or declare war.
Clearly not thinking straight due to the flips of Bruck and Zabalam, he declares
war on the most powerful yet humble nation on the planet... The Austrians!!

We start right in with it -- a Hussar ARMY vs Zabalam. The attack was VERY harsh
for us, but in the end we got a promotion and a...

GOLDEN AGE! Income from about +1 gpt to +115!

The immediate result is... an elite knight attacking the cav in question and...
dying. Oh well.. let's hit his hurt rear again...

Quasdanovich :P Sweet irony!

We make ANOTHER army and put in a Hussar. (At some point, we'll DEFINITELY want
to make the Pentagon, and perhaps Mil Academy)

On to the real action, the cities. Several retreats up North, but the Army
wins a tough battle to enable Zabalam's capture, and Bruck, who truly WANTS to
come back home, falls without much defense. Ashak begs a smackdown, and gets one from
our Army, as we capture that city too. Bruck has rax, market, courthouse intact?!

Marad of Sumeria raises its hand -- HIT US, hit US!! And so we do! Worker captured
to clear the path, Army beats a musket, hussar beats another, and the city folds
like a deck of cards.

Our GA and war happiness let us drop lux from 20% to 0, raising income to +203!
That's quite a few temple rushes, or even self-research. In fact, we could
reach that in about 20 turns (or at least cut down the cost a lot when we get it)
That sounds better, getting us faster to rifles and fascism.
I MM cities - nothing on Hussar is taken off since our salt is gone for now, but
others start on various culture buildings.

IBT - Oops, almost lost Marad, as cav comes out and JUST loses to our Hussar,
promoting it. We lose our wine supply from Germany til we renew for Ivory,
Furs, WM+124g.

[6] 710 - Our rear wing Hussars run forward, TWO armies advance slowly into the jungles
around Bad-tibira, and one advances on Lagash.

IBT - Sumerians drag Zulu into war with us. Smart move for Shaka, as he can
easily dispatch our many armies near his capital. 8-\

[7] 720 -On hearing of the treachery of the Zulu, the vigilant Army of Mack's marauders
sweeps doom upon the Zulu from the east, with a surprise flank attack! We can
sustain this second war, but would be in trouble with a third from Ottomans.
Zulus are at war with Ottomans in fact. Could it hurt to ally together? Would
we let Shaka loose before 20? I think not. Zulu have three cities left to east,
which would be swallowed if Osmon went 20 turns at him. Zulus gone and no flip
chances for what we capture? I like that. But no, price is just too high, about 700g.

Outside Lagash a lot of forces have shown up, so instead of attacking, we pillage
several tiles and pull back, killing four units in the open.

At Bad-tibira our Hussar army goes on a tear, killing three rifles, longbow left 8-\

Ibabanago is reached by two Hussar, killing Pike and Impi, one longbow left.

IBT Longbow beats Hussar! (This may be their only offensive win!?!?)

[8] 730 AD - Let's dig right in at Bad-tibira. Lesser health army runs through
rifle, cav, and conscript rifle. Another conscript on top, beaten by elite knight.
Now longbow hit by knight and we win, taking the city. It would be 'prudent' of
course to raze it, except... that city has saltpeter :P We keep it for now.
250g is a nice prize for the city, which has rax, market, aqueduct and bank in place.
Doh! The salt lies within the borders of Agape, tiny hamlet nearby.
Second army can reach it and attack twice, killing two rifle. One left.

Over in East, Mack's Marauders come through, beating pike and Impi to capture
Mpondo, their iron city. Next door Ibabanago falls to 2 Hussar and knight with
one retreat. Another rax intact - I check to see where SunTzu is, and it's not
ours, but Vikings. Outside Marad, we counterattack those who came forward as
the new fresh army arrives. About 4-5 die unanswered. (Vienna is on Pentagon, btw)
Tis end of peace with Ottomans, so we look to renew. Nationalism can't be touched.
Steam Power would be 140gpt (ouch), and Medicine 120gpt. No thanks. Let's at least
get a lux discount. His Incense for peace, RoP, our spices and 7gpt. Deal.
Our last deal shelled out 50gpt so at least that's done with now.
(Germany lacks Nationalism, btw, only Sumeria and Ottomans have that)

IBT - Lots of movement around Agade and Lagash, but no attacks.
We see Arab land is shrinking, so Sumeria is foolishly going for the softer
target while their core is in peril. Resistance in Zabalam and Mpondo ends.

[9] 740 AD - Two retreats, but Agade is captured. The salt is now in NEUTRAL
territory. Around Lagash we hit open units. Elite Hussar goes after a cav and...
Melas?! Hmm, wasn't expecting a leader that time, was aiming to kill not fish,
but we'll take it. At this point saving for a rifle army may even be a good
idea. I'll save for next leader to build Hussar army, rifle army or rush Mil Acad.

IBT Scandinavia and Germany come to peace. Tons of movement both Sumerian and
Zulu around Intombe-Kufah, just two small attacks.

[10] 750 AD - Zimbabwe just has pikes for defense? Here comes Mack's Marauders!
Two down, now Impi on top and bow beneath. We kill two, then a superImpi defends
against our "Hlobane's Ours" knight and wins without taking a scratch. Another Hussar
took that guy down though. It got a lil ugly at Lagash, with a few retreats and
a Hussar lost, but we took it. The army is hurt but covered, and the newly healed
army just arrived in the area to help cover. There is stack of a dozen MDI/Impi/
Longbow SE of Lagash that you can't see at the moment.

There's an unmoved worker on saltpeter right now, you can colonize, or wait for
temples (rush?) or continue without and crank out a few pikes per turn.

Tis too late to take pics and post, though if anyone wants to they can.
We're now up to 32 cities, 101 units, 'strong' vs everyone, Industrial,
and with leader in Graz for army or move to Vienna. Germany and Vikings JUST got
Nationalism and so our turns have dropped. Instead of 9 at unreachable pace,
we can finish self-research in 4-5 turns! :goodjob: Then Fascism next, at max self-
research rate.

The next leader should have a blast - swallowing Zimbabwe next turn or so, and
with 3-Hussar armies not far from Ur itself! It would inconceivable to stop for
peace before the two foe capitals are taken or razed. Leo's is in Sumer and Smiths
is in Erech. As usual, there are over a half-dozen maybe a dozen cities that are flip
risk. Rush temples, rush workers, or ignore them and leave poor defenders there, and
just retake them (the latter was my approach). Our 'core' re-taken cities have
half-Austrians half-Sumerians, so either no starve or starve totally down to 1.
Golden Age should last til middle of Bede's turn. We might indeed be ready to revolt
into Fascism after the last turn of Golden Age!?! :hammer:

Good job Franz Charis! I was just SO bummed when those cities flipped. :( It was just adding insult to injury when they flipped on the very last turn of Anarchy (as so often happens in CIV3 - such as pollution happening the exact turn you build Mass Transit or Recycling Plant).

Ordinarily I would have started a war or not renewed the Zulu's Peace during the last part of Anarchy - but I was in a Catch 22 because I dared not risk overlapping our Golden Age with our Anarchy. I was really feeling trapped and helpless. Then when I realized that I kind of left YOU trapped with peace treaties (not entirely my fault, but the Zulu peace was), I was starting to feel really depressed! ;) Good thing those stupid and arrogant Sumerians decided to send a unit traipsing across.

With my luck, I'll bet you that I'll get saddled with the Anarchy period going to Fascism as well! :p
