RBtS3 - The Uncultured One

Yeah, if we shift capital we need to put FP in Ulundi, because it already has culture. We can only shift capital to Babylon also. This game is getting interesting now, I think the question is how quickly we can get to liberalism and hopefully nationalism for drafting. Also we cant switch to any other religion in this game, since there is a chance it will naturally spread to one of our other cities.

Uberfish is up.

Brennus isn't financial. I don't agree with the cottage spam at kwaDukuza, we needed a GP farming location, but might as well live with it now. I didn't hire any scientists as we want Ulundi and Babylon to grow and finish their forges.

Inherited turn - promote axe to shock and kill barb sword in forest

860 AD - mostly I'm just completing previously set builds. Brennus declared war on Genghis Khan, not our problem

920 AD - Machinery in. Alex is now tech leader, he was obviously researching it as he offers 140 of his 240 gold for it. I accept this offer and self-research priesthood (1 turn) to open monarchy. Trade him silks for wine

940 AD - Trade with Alex - Philo + 155 gold for Construction, HBR, Monarchy. Did not revolt yet, it would cost us 3 gold. Feud is not available for trade; set research on Civil Service for Maces and irrigation chains. I begin training catapults

960 AD - whipped a lighthouse in Dur-Karigalzu (ahead of forge, city is working 3 lake tiles). Mausoleum BIADL

980 AD - Brennus obviously got a refund because he offers 405 gold for COL, I take it. This money will be spent on CS research. Monty demands copper in tribute, we are not ready to fight yet and I pay up.

1010 AD - AI poisons water at Nobamba, thanks for that

1030 AD - CS is in. Revolt: HR + Bureaucracy, start irrigation chains to rice at Nobamba and Ondini (our capital radius will expand in 2 turns after anarchy finishes giving us this rice)

1040 AD - Colossus BIADL. Monty cultural expansion steals our cottage at Um***. I think we should build up some medieval troops and attack him.

Remember to cancel the copper tribute to Monty asap.

Played 10 turns.

I agree we should go after monty next and soon, better to clean him up so we dont have to worry about surprise attacks from our backside while we move towards the west eventually later on.

Checked the tech situation, and noticed only Brennus and Alex are either as or more advanced then us. Pretty nice, although not what I was expecting at the start of the game. We arent even up to paper here..

Anyways, speaking of Paper, deicded to set research on it next. We should go after liberalism soon for nationalism and drafting.. Charlemegne and Brennus both ask us to declare war on Genghis, but I declined both of them. Alex is pleased with genghis, so dont want to piss alex off here. We had 300 gold sitting around, so I updated 2 of our city raider swordsman to maces, and then, we get a random event at with perfect timing..

Heh, always happens to me right after Ive spent all my gold. Monty founds a city in our backlines, pretty worthless so we can let him keep that for a while when we go to war.. Whipped Market in Nongama because it was working a citizen specialist at size 9. I researched Paper and was going to go Education next, but noticed we still dont have aesthetics/literature for heroic epic.. Decided to research towards that for now while I set 2 scientists and 1 engineer in Babylon. We should have around 85% odds of a Great Scientist in 14 turns, which we can use to lightbulb Education en route to Liberalism. Also Dur Kuragalzu is working 2 merchants. It has very nice food surplus and we should build a courthouse there after a forge to work 2 merchants/1 spy/1 engineer. Pretty nice makeshift GP farm for now.

I chopped massive forests that will never be in any of our cities cultural borders, and have set up a basic army in Umungdulango.. We should be ready for war in a few more turns... I would have 8-10 maceman and 7 catupults to be safe here, Alex is researching relatively fast, but I think we should be first to Liberalism as he will probably go down the guilds/banking route before getting education.

Okay...so Qwack seemed to give me enough to declare right away, and I did so one turn in. A few more things to add to the laundry list of reasons why this variant is way harder than it first seemed are 1) Domination limit is going to be hard to reach, and 2) WW sucks without having a culture slider to abuse. So, how did the war go? Well Texcoco had a stack of nice troops right on our border. Lucky for us, he moved half of them out on the offensive:

tacticsxw5.jpg

I had enough troops coming in support that I continued with me entire main stack towards Texcoc. Monty then attacked my main stack both from the city and from his offensive stack, in what I would say is a nice but ultimately futile gesture of defiance. We lost a Maceman and had massive injury, but gained a GG which I settled in Ulundi. So, while reinforecments moved in and the frontline troops healed, Texcoco whipped in a few Longbowmen, on a hill. That sucked. This also sucked:

fudgeqy0.jpg

So I diverted some incoming units to take Nongoma back (only the one Longbow lived). Apparently Monty had some troops down in Tlacopan. He also poisoned UMgungundlovu, which promptly whipped something good at killing, I can't recall what but it was a two pop whip. After Aesthetics came in and went Literature to do this:

glwc6.jpg

Looking at the techs out there I think we are in a very strong position to get Liberalism first, at least vs. the civs we have met. I also note that when you pop Taoism from Philosophy, the AI doesn't prioritize it. In the long run the GL will help us a lot, so putting those specialists on mines will delay our GS but ultimately pay off (might even be faster if we can double pop Education). This moved looked a bit worse when WW gave us three unhappy in Babylon. The good news kept coming in:

mobyef6.jpg

Sigh. I did make a trade:

monony6.jpg

Yes, yes, Monotheism is not helpful but it unlocked Theology, and I noticed Christianity had already been discovered. Turns out Monty has it, let's pointy stick it out of him after taking his capital:

killkillkillec4.jpg

I'm sorry, I have many good screenshots showing all the various fronts of the war, but I'm out of time now. Please make sure you familiarize yourself with everything!

Well the war with Monty continues. I raze his city near kwaDukusa.

An event of some help.

A building of some help. I whipped away WW to get it.

A message of no help.

Here's the stack he's brought against us.

Another issue we've got is that we've no cultural defense so attacking troops get a huge advantage (especially CR ones). I whip a crossbow and upgrade an axe to a mace. Let's see how we go.

Not very well. Lost every battle but one.

At least I captured the Hindu holy city, complete with shrine. [screenshot disappeared]. Kept it even though we'll struggle to keep it culturally because the shrine will bring in much needed wealth.

WW is hurting, so peace may be needed. Here is the peace deal.

I think we need to take it and concentrate our efforts on Alex. Our army is not the greatest at the moment and mainly over Monty's way. It will take a while to get it over. The whip can be applied to generate a new army.

I moved a settler over to north of the capital and would have founded a city in the area. We have 2 others idling away as well.

I only played 5 but thought it important to stop here so we can come up with a plan. Problem is, I'm away for the next 2-3 days so ThERat can continue on.

err, I won't continue as I am away for another 14 days

Oh great... I think we have to take the peace treaty with Monty now. We probably ought to have built some city walls and left a few troops guarding our borders with Alex. Never mind, whipping will probably sort this out

Ondini would be a sorry place to grow up as it gets passed between Shaka, Monty and Alex . I'd take the peace deal, make the swap to Theocracy and No State Religion, and hit Alex until he cries uncle. We are probably close enough to wait for Nationalism/Gunpowerd before finishing off Monty.

Darrell

Theocracy and No State Religion

Just to clarify, we can't do that, because no state religion will make all our religions give culture  . Yes, the diplo modifiers are going to stay for the w hole game.

This looks like an interesting situation, Alex always seems to pull something like this. Ill take a look at the save tonight and post something.

Checked the save. Well, I agree with the others have posted, we should whip a bit and put a little hurting on alex. I would personally just go after ondini and that coastal city we can see and then try to get peace with him and clean up monty.

Also, I think we should set 2 scientists in Babylon for 4 turns so we get a great scientist out in time to lightbulb education. Tenochitlen was quite a grab here, with the hindu shrine which is providing +18 gold per turn. Its also a possible GP farm with the 2 fish sources and the fresh water lake.

So peace with monty and go after alex here seems to be the plan. Watch out for monty thought after the 10 turn peace period is off, he will attack us if we leave that border lightly defended.

Blid, your up for 10 turns.

hmm, its been 30 hours now and blid has not posted a got it. He hasn't posted anything in the thread for a few days either, so he may be away.

Uberfish, you can take it. If blid comes back then he can take the set after uberfish.

Ouch, sorry I missed that I was up. I'm working on my adv 22 report so would only be able to play tomorrow. I'll swap with uberfish if he can play before tomorrow night GMT time.

I've been a bit busy lately with ... Oblivion. The thing was sitting in the shelves for a year and I just happened to try it last week and got hooked immediately, forgetting completely about wrapping up a report for adv 22 this week end finding myself with two SGs to play and an undone report. Parnthesis closed, let's get back to business.

Monty won't adopt paganism along the other trades so I just sign peace

01-2.jpg

I see Charlemagne signed peace with Genghis so I gifted metal casting to ease relations a bit. He's still annoyed so I'm selling him pigs for some coins.

Alex adopted police state and theocracy. He's quite serious about this war. We are investing EPs in Monty so I switch that back to Alex.

I started whipping around maces and trebs. I dialed down research to 0% on my third round. I should have thought about that earlier since the scientist from Babylon still gave more beakers than needed for education.

Brennus asked us again to join him in his war against GK. Can't you see WHEOOH ?

Someone poisoned our water supply in Dur

02-2.jpg

Not the best choice, we'll be whipping that treb, thank you.

Alex was amassing units in Mycenae but he finally decided to bring his stack for attack

03.jpg

You can see we're not really in danger. I wiped the stack with a loss of one axe at 75% odds. I was trying to keep the better units for attack duty. It's quite good that we killed those units in our culture. A great general is born from those battles.

I started an irrigation chain for our future city. I didn't settle though, maybe once the war is over or after liberalism. It would probably be a production city anyway.

04.jpg

I went after Ondini first. That stack was enough to take the city.

05.jpg

Alex won the apostolic palace election. That could mean trouble. At least we have the option to defy the resolution since we have a hindu city. This should give us time till we force him to peace. Still, he could make our life quite a nightmare.

Our army gets Mycenae next

06.jpg

It had only two longbows inside. I did kill some units in the open though.

Alex researched military tradition. We should upgrade the impis we have, raze Corinth settle a city to secure our new cities and get rid of the culture and try to get peace. Alex is still refusing to talk but he would probably change his mind once we raze Corinth. He lost quite a number of units and our losses were minimal. Greek culture is quite annoying

07.jpg

I hate razing a greek city since we get another negative modifier but we can't help it. Thinking about the AP trouble, we may even keep the fight till his capital is down. Monty is backwards so we should be able to delay killing him off a bit longer.

Tenochtitlan would be out of revolt soon so don't forget to whip longbows there. There is no road access so it is on its own. I set Mycenae on a galley but I realized later there aztec culture is blockin that route too. So feel free to change that.

Anyone feeling like playing a AW game ?

I am not sure why we are building a university and palace in our 2 GG cities in the middle of a war but, I let the builds stand.

1410 AD (201) On computer turn Alex counterattacked Mycenae with his crossbow and mace, killing our crossbow and mace. We have one damaged CR3 unit left in the city and I pull it out, leaving the city empty. Our elephants can retake it. I upgraded a cr2/shock axe we had to maceman.

Fortunately Alex has no gunpowder so military tradition will do him no good yet. In other news Brennus captured Ning-Hsia from Genghis

1420 AD (202) for some reason Alex didn't take the undefended Mycenae, I guess the AI is scared of our reinforcements. his mace suicided on our units in the jungle and crossbow tried to run away. Elephant kills it. Whipped a longbow in Tenochtitlan. Ordered up a chariot somewhere

1430 AD (203) Advancing on Corinth. Alex makes an unexpected counterattack on our front group of 6 killing a mace and 2 catapults, result is 3-3

Brennus made peace with Genghis, I am getting worried that he's becoming too strong.

1460 AD (206) Sieging Corinth. Alex is stacking a lot of units in there. On the first turn we lose 1 treb but kill 5 Alex units. Who says siege is nerfed, this would have been painful without trebs.
We started to get WW unhappiness so I spent some of our money on researching liberalism faster so we can go to Nationhood

1470 AD (207) - Decided to settle the deer/copper city with 1 turn left to liberalism. Attack Corinth again.

Alex is now willing to talk peace. Neither Monty or Brennus has enough on their hands yet, so we can continue the war with Greece.

I made a medic 3 chariot. At this point I notice there was a 7/5 chariot sitting around fortified on some random hill outside Nobamba so I didn't need to train a new 3/2 one :(

1480 AD (8) - our palace is moved but I do Liberalism -> Nationalism, revolt to Nationhood and research on Gunpowder anyway. Bonus: Alex declined to kill our elephant that razed Corinth which is weird because he'd been active in counterattacking our stack

1490 AD (9) - AP attempts to return Tenochtitlan to Monty. I defy obviously. Alex loaded a HA and something else into a galley, send an elephant to Corinth to defend.

1500 AD (10) - too many WW unhappies in Ulundi, whipped a courthouse. Moved our spy to Athens. Oh, I noticed we can draft maces now, is this new in BTS?

I suggest we try and take Athens, and try to force a vassalization as capturing the western Greek cities would only strengthen Brennus who is already 450 points ahead of us. Alternatively we could raze the city just to kill the Pope so that he doesn't keep trying to help Monty out. But I think I would really like to vassalize Alex and keep his three western cities as a buffer against the Celts.
