Recommend me sci-fi shows and movies.

Gattaca and Dark City are 2 of my favourite movies ever..

Other good sci-fi movies: The Fifth Element, Cube, Blade Runner, Brazil, and 12 Monkeys (ignoring obvious picks like the Matrix and T2)

I agree with all of these, with probably Fifth Element being the best.

Babylon 5 has a very dense and rewarding mythology and is, I think, the most complex and interesting of the space operas. Get into it.

I'm also fond of Silent Running, though most folks probably would find it quite cheesy - but well that goes for a lot of old sci-fi. Some other classics like the original Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet are also musts.

Beat me to those. I would add A Boy and His Dog and Dark Star. The
latter may not be to all tastes but I found it amusingly quirky. For pure cheese,
nothing beats Plan 9 From Outer Space - it really is so bad it's funny.

For TV, I am surprised The Twilight Zone has not been mentioned yet.

Shows that have been mentioned since my last post that I've already seen, and my comments:

1. X-Files: As I've said, I've seen some of it. It's not really to my tastes because the characters aren't especially likable and the plot is not very compelling. Also, the fact that the existence of aliens is supposed to be ambiguous is hilarious to me because they're revealed in the first episode.

2. Dr. Who: I love Dr. Who and I'm already watching it.

3. Cowboy Bebop: I've seen all of it. Pretty good show.

4. The Fifth Element: Good movie.

5. Blade Runner: Good movie; in fact, I'd say it's the smartest sci-fi movie prior to Highlander 2: the Quickening. (:mischief:)

6. Solaris: Now I know you're talking about the 1972 version, which I haven't seen and thus won't comment on, but I saw the George Clooney remake version and it's probably the worst movie I've ever seen in my life.

7. Alien: Seen it, as well as Aliens. Both great films.

8. Plan 9 from Outer Space: I love making fun of terrible movies with my friends, and this is awesome for it.

9. Twilight Zone: A great show, though I haven't seen much of it.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of that.

Isn't that the one where there is only one actor playing two charachters and Dennis Leary voices the robot?

Yeah, except Kevin Spacey does the voice. It's also, really, really good. If a bit predictable.

also, Bladerunner is the greatest sci-fi movie of all time.

Well, somebody already covered Bebop, and you're going into Firefly, so I don't have much else to add. Haven't seen much sci-fi myself.

6. Solaris: Now I know you're talking about the 1972 version, which I haven't seen and thus won't comment on, but I saw the George Clooney remake version and it's probably the worst movie I've ever seen in my life.

Yeah, it wasn't a very good adaptation. I haven't seen the Russian version either, but I highly recommend the novel. It is amazing.

If you want something that is very different, the Lexx is a show for you. Can Sliders be considered Sci Fi?

Why wouldn't you consider Sliders to be science fiction?

By the way, LEXX is great. Especially the slut

A friend recommended Primer this weekend. I haven't seen it, but from what I've read it's very well done and about as "heady" as you can get.

Movie: Metropolis Freaking. Great. Movie, mang.

TV Show: Firefly

Book: Riverworld

I think those are all perrty awesome, especially the first book of Riverworld, I think it's really interesting how civilization ends up getting set up in the world.

I feel the second book of Riverworld is better, but whatever.
Ringworld by Larry Niven is always good.

And it is good to see someone else liking Metropolis. Lang version, not the anime I assume.

I'll make a couple suggestions:
1 - The X-Files. There are two kinds of X-Files episodes, those which follow a story arc (known as "mytharc episodes") and those which do not (known as MoW or Monster of the Week). I prefer the MoW episodes, but neither are political or anti-religious. It's almost exclusively intelligently done, and the episodes that aren't serious are funny and worth watching in their own right.
2 - Ultraviolet. This is a BBC series about vampires (though that term is never used...leeches is what they're called in the series). Whether you consider vampire stories sci fi is the one reservation I have for this recommendation.

Movies:
1 - The Thing. The greatest monster movie ever made, starring a wise cracking Kurt Russell; this is one of the truly terrifying sci-fi movies ever made.
2 - BladeRunner. How do you know that what you know is actually what you know? Maybe it's not. Either way, this movie kicks 12 kinds of ass, including android.

If you enjoyed Legend of the Galactic Heroes, I can safely recommend Crest of the Stars and its sequels, Banner of the Stars I, II, III. :)

Sliders is definitely sci-fi and very different...Good though?...That's a different question...

The first couple seasons were good. Then it got crappy.

Primer is good, but doesn't make sense.

The question is do you like artistic, ideas, plot, special effects or story?

e.g. Good Story but sometimes iffy special effects

Doctor Who
Quantum Leap
Time Bandits

e.g. Good Special Effects but fairly obvious plot

Alien
2001
Terminator

I'll look into them. Anything that involves Space Prussians earns an instant <3 from me.

Star Wars (not just the movies, but also some of the books and games)
Mass Effect series

Although you mentioned these in your OP.
