Resources

I think as few as possible

but since there is winery making wine
so there should be brewery making beer
and so on...

few new improvments + improvments existing in the game = many possibilities

I don't know what to do with future and modern improvments for acquiring some resources (Synthetic fuel, composites, plastics, hydrogen) Is it better to treat this like a world wonder (like rock n roll, brodway, hollywood) national wonders (like ironworks) or buildings (i don't know if it's possiblity to produce resources in buildings) or just resources on the map with corresponding improvments (like workshops with gained possibility to produce resources)?
 
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but is it possible to have more resources than the amount currently allowed in the game? I thought that once you filled up the gamefont.tga file that's it ....

Did you think of a Pomegranate resource?
 
I think Lapis Lazuli was traded quite a bit in the Ancient World.
This could be kind of cruel...but what about slaves as a resource?
And there are a lot of manufactured goods traded in the Modern World...what about adding them somehow? The problem is if everyone can build something, then there will be no trading going on.
Anyway, I think this would be a great mod to make, because everyone could pick and choose which resources to add, for other mods and these could become the standard for additional resources.

My thought on this mod was for this world. But resources for fantasy/sci-fi could be made too.
 
So Zuul are you planning on making this a mod? Do you need any help?Major categories I can think of that will need modification.

Yes I haven't got connection in my new appartment yet. Should take another 1-2 weeks.

I have little experience in 3d modeling but much in skinning/sprites. And much in xml of course.
 
I have experience of course with xml, a little with reskinning but also no experience with 3D modelling

@Patricius - So it could be possible to make model similliar to wheat
Looking from top crops looks like a cross - could you edit this model and make it like a star? something like that:

It shouldn't make harder for the game to handle it, but plants with leaves (like potatoes) could be displayed as more 3D :)

BTW I found Amber and Apples and Flax and other useful resources in Ancient Mideterrian Mod

slave resorces needs 3D modelling, maybe Patricious could help you
 
Really, I do not know much about 3d modeling...I started 8 days ago when I downloaded 3ds Max trial version...I took a look at a lot of the resources and their art files and it seems a lot of the metals could be changed just by re-skinning and slaves could even be made by taking the worker model, scaling it down, and putting a couple of more, and possibly reskinning. The tougher ones are going to be the more unique ones, but with some work and a little tinkering, I think a lot of things can be done, without creating new models; just using current objects in the game.

I finished potatoes yesterday (reskinning wheat) - I'll give a screenshot later
dj_anion sended me some buttons of resources - they are really nice - i think we could use them - i'll post screenshots later (maybe after weekend - when i'll have them much more
 
I did a quick skin on the worker and made a slave.

Included in the zip file you'll find an xml file containing all the information needed for putting it into the game - you'll have to put them into their respective xml files (Unitinfos, etc.), and the button is the same as it always was, but I think it's solid.

Hope someone finds a use for it.

Potatoes was already made in the GreenMod but maybe your version looks better.
 
Now if I skin the slave unit a different color I can have my "alien" slave resource. Thanks erik.
 
talking about resources... lol I have been thinking for quite a while now that the way resources are in Civ 4 is kind of unrealistic.

One thing I was thinking would make it more realistic is having an empire storage. That storage would store mined materials. The earlier resources, like tin, copper, and iron would generate more units per turn of that element, and later stuff like Aluminum, Uranium, and others would generate less or only 1 per turn per source. Of course with that said, the stuff mined would be used to make certain units, and if you ran out of the proper material to make a particular unit, than you wouldn't be able to make it plain and simple.

Only problem from my perspective is the coding that would be involved. I'm only a good enough programmer to edit stuff... I cannot write anything from scratch. So therefor I have no idea if it is even possible with the way Civ4 is right now. What do you guys think?

I'd certainly like to see more resources also. Good ideas Zuul. ;)
 
@Agent 009 - It would be nice it can realy make game more interesting and harder (much more strategies and thinking :P)

@Zuul - OK so here is potato, i've maded it because potato in green mod is to flat (BTW Lexx thanks for great tutorial) and i thought i shoul work with that for a while. I'm not sure if it looks better (i didn't draw much and especially "from a scrach" ;)) but it looks like 3D now. Feel free to use it

i've tried but the texture for the potato is smaller than texture for field... i've tried couple of times changing the field and this solution is the best i've reached. if anyone knows how make the farm ground texture smaller i would be glad to here it :)
