Revolution IOT

I have cleared my schedule a bit and I can handle this now. Is it all right to assume direct control of the British Empire?

Political Upheaval in the League of Urun

Three years ago the League was a prosperous and peaceful alliance. It is still very prosperous, perhaps more so, but its political machinations have fallen to backstabbing and petty politics instead of the lofty ideals the Emperor had in mind when creating the League.

Vancouver itself has prospered, pushing far beyond its boundaries into Canada, cutting off the Russian Empire from the rest of North America, and reaching the Hudson Bay. This expansion has made communication with Breton and Cornwall far easier. Vancouver has also seen an Industrial Boom.It has led many to say that Vancouver is the premier city in all of the Americas, although some disagree saying that Acadia has a natural beauty to it rivaled by none. In any event, Vancouver has remained the most powerful of the 7 nations comprising the league, although its dominant voting block is coming apart at the seems.

The Principality of Seattle has seen turmoil rack its governance. Five princes have been assassinated in the past year, leaving only a single male left in the family. Should this last Prince die off without an heir, the Principality will pass on the the second son of the Emperor through marriage, leaving many people of Seattle in little doubt as to who is behind the murders, evidence to the contrary be damned. This has left Seattle as a hotbed of anti League activity, although Vancouver, working with the Prince, has kept a lid on the worst of it thus far.

The Kingdom of Hawaii has also grown politically unstable, with a sizable traditionalist following wanting independence from the League. The upper Echelons of society realize what a boon the League is in the state of world affairs, however the common person just sees no manufactories being built, traditions being discarded, and taxes on trade. On the bright side, or the not so bright side considering the independence movement forming there, Hawaii is the home of the recent fleet built for the League, which is also crewed by mostly Hawaiians. It is currently stationed around Vancouver as the 1st Fleet.

Japan is almost as traditionalist as Hawaii, however the Japanese as having an easier time adopting new ways. Perhaps part of that is because those 'new ways' have brought them ski much closer to uniting Japan. Perhaps most significantly from the League's perspective, the Shogun is firmly behind the Emperor on most matters in the Forum.

Kuwait is the prodigy of the League. An uneasy political ally of Vancouver, the Soge of Kuwait has benefited from rapid expansion of his territory through the League's resources. Although mostly devoid of resources, the land has been strategically important by providing a port on the Mediterranean and by cutting up Egypt's expansion east. By seizing Damascus and Jerusalem, The Soge of Kuwait has become almost equal to the Emperor in terms of political power. However, he rarely wields it against him, especially as the Emperor has chosen to send 3 corps of Vancouver soldiers to the region to match the 2 corps raised by Kuwait itself. The purpose is mysterious as none seem to know anything but rumor. Kuwait the city has prospered as her merchants are in half the world's cities, and it is said that if you own something that hasn't touched Riccian, FRCN, or Kuwait hands, then it must be homemade. The city is the major source of trade revenue for the League of Urun, and much of her trade has been the cause of the trouble in Hawaii, one of Kuwait's prime domestic markets because of the lack of competition.

The Republic of Breton has stagnated with internal debate. Some want to secede to the Castillian federation, citing the seeming downfall of Cornwall. Others curse the Spanish and want to reclaim France under the banner and resources of the League. It is about 50/50 what will happen at this point. It has recently abstained on everything in the League's Forum as no matter what it would pick, it would cause unrest at home. However when it did vote it sided with the Emperor's son in Cornwall.

The Confederation of Cornwall has broken down. The almost feudal like system has shown why such a society cannot work in modern times, yet the Emperor's son shows no signs of changing it. Revolts are an everyday thing, and are put down with brute force, often foreign mercenaries doing the dirty work. The Emperor's son has seen a break with his father over this issue, as he and his nobles are reluctant to relinquish the absolute power they have in the confederation. As a result, the Emperor's son has become e the face of the Internal opposition against him. Falling short of the guts needed to declare independence, he has settled with refusing to send any taxes to Vancouver, and declaring the military of Cornwall to be no part of the League's. He has also attempted to unite Hawaii and Seattle against Vancouver in most votes in the Forum of the League. What will happen from here is yet to be seen.

Riccio announces that it understands Egypt's issues with eastern expansion, and so has declared it shall avoid most inland African territories in the northern half of the continent; it is primarily interested in coastal territories. To assist the inland Egyptian settlements in building their economies, various Riccese ports and major thoroughfares around the Sahara region will work to assist Egyptian merchants as Egypt expands westwards. Trading stations will be opened around the region to provide translators and currency exchanges to assist in goods. Riccese bankers are also opening their arms to assisting Egypt's agricultural projects across north Africa where such efforts would be viable; despite the hostility of much of the region, we believe that some outlying areas could become prosperous through the power of science.

It is easy to note Riccese interests have set up a port in the vast expanses of India, and the colonies of South America continue to swell. To assure those who may be concerned of Riccese intentions, we are open to signing non-aggression pacts with all powers; merely propose such in another message and we shall automatically accept (OOC: I'll add it to my orders). The powerful Riccese economy hopes to have stations around the world; consider the great boon it could be to the local economies to have those from one of the world's highest-wage nations in the neighborhood. With the permission of countries in East Asia, we would also like to set up a trading outpost in that region in the coming years as well.

Without honor, a man is but another animal, is he not?

Old Enemies and New Friends (Pt. 1)

Many years ago, Castille and Aragon were but two kingdoms fighting for control of the what would become the Spanish Empire. History, it seems, would repeat itself. A far cry from the Kingdom of old, Aragon, much like Castille merely a decade ago, was destitute and penniless, controlled by General Phillip De Manz. While a good ruler in his own right, economic realities took the situation out of De Manz's hands. He soon came to realize that an independent Aragon would never come to exist, not with neighbors such as the Castillians and the Merchant Empire to the East. When Castille invaded to complete the conquest of Iberia, De Manz reportedly approached the Castillain forces alone to negotiate surrender. De Manz was allowed to remain in power as regional governor of Aragon, a favor which he would return in the form of the De Manz Plan.

GLOBAL ECONOMIC NEWS

Two countries had an economic boom this turn. When a country is randomly selected for an economic boom or bust, further RNG rolls are determined who is affected. Having a trade agreement or free trade agreement increases the chance of being affected.

After initial affected countries are determined, more rolls are determined who they affect, and so on. A country won’t “infect” twice. Riccio, for instance, has so many agreements that it was hit affected once in its own economic boom, and three times in China’s boom. However, once the “those affected by Riccio” roll is done, it isn’t done again to prevent endless rebounding.

For this turn, anybody with just normal trade relations weren’t affected because I wanted to see how it would go with just trade agreements/FTAs. In the future, anybody who has normal trade relations and above will have a chance to be tapped.

Economic downturns work the same way and can be equally dramatic. An economic downturn will never wipe out more than half of a country's factories. However, if less factories that required are wiped out, RR increases for the turn.

Economic Downturn in the Merchant Empire of Riccio

GLOBAL AFFAIRS

Every country now has a new trait listed on the stat sheet depending on its power relative to others. NPCs take into account this stuff when engaging in diplomacy and otherwise is just for bragging rights.

The ranks are

Insignificant(<-2)
Minor (-1-0)
Regional (z-score 0-1)
Great (1-2)
Superpower (2-3, not extremely likely)
Hyperpower (>3, gamebreaking)

But since these things are based on a z-score, don’t get too bent out of shape. Some countries have inflated scores due to having a large bank (which only count for little), for example. Manufactories also weigh more in the calculation than provinces (because they weigh more in trade than provinces). An army weighs more than a province or manufactory. A fleet weighs the most.

Final GM Notes

Do NOT post “trade agreements with all” or “accept all” at all in this thread ever. If you sign trade agreements or free trade agreements, you must put that in your orders and you must list every country you are signing with. You also must mention all alliances you are joining, defensive pacts being signed, non-aggression treaties, and embargoes in your orders.

Secondly, if you are missing Leadership Points, it is because you don’t have a capital.

FINALLY, now that many of you have actual traits, when posting or sending orders, make sure you copy and paste your traits from your nation post on the first page to the top of your orders. Also, if you know you got leftover EP, please tell me you’re banking it and how much! My stats page changes constantly while updating it.

Before I get yelled out about Riccio's downturn, let me state that it was nerfed. Riccio's downturn and the rolls that followed were originally so bad that countries were losing 65 factories and there wasn't a "only half of factories can be wiped" rule originally.

Secondly, Egypt's Wali System Trait was heavily nerfed.

Also, I missed RS's claims. So, +10 EP for him this turn and we'll assume that last turn's claims were claimed.

The Romania-Moldova Kingdom, established by rebel generals and supported by a popular uprising, seeks nothing less than than to replace the current government in its entirety.

OOC: I have serious problems viewing the stats file, so I will suppose I have again 10 points which are worth 20 claims, and I seriously don't care about how much EP I have. Just split it into 2 equal parts, half of it goes on internal country reforms, as explained in the RP, and the other half.... goes to my newest, rebellious neighbor, to calm them down and ask for peaceful negotiations.

IC: Split EP into 2 equal parts. Half is spent on internal affairs, and half is given to Moldova to calm the populace and allow a peaceful merging, as they have no reason to rise up against the Government anymore.

Claims: ( you forgot my last claims. Teal claims are new ones. Don't overlook these ones too. Also not that one claim at border with Roman Empire.)

======================================
RP: (the added alliterative appeal in the title is intended)

Revolts, reform, relocation, revolution, Romania.

The blockade in Predeal came to a sudden halt, after almost an year of Resistance. A brigade from Brasov surrounded the bandits and routed them away m in the first days of January. the winter was curiously mild, but nonetheless took it's toll on the Wallachians. They reached Brasov shortly thereafter.

The town welcomed King Marcu and General Patrascu , but as soon as Marcu Anghel was seated in his temporary residence, problems started arriving. Apparently, Brasov wasn't just the center of Romania's mixups, but the refugees from the scorched Curtea de Arges wanted to move there, and the city wasn't large enough. King Marcu immediately ordered that a large portion of his treasury to be used in the reconstruction of the city.
But not the same could be done for Ada Kaleh. The fire not only wiped out the city, but an explosion in a gunpowder storehouse caused the island to sink into the Danube, washing away any signs of habitation. Altough few, the population of Ada Kaleh needed relocation nearby, and FAST. Thus, King Marcu ordered villages and trading posts to be built along the Danube on both sides, to provide shelter to the Ada Kaleh refugees.

Another major problem were two Army Lieutenants stationed in Moldova. They were some of the few who didn't joined Patrascu while King Avram was still alive, and thus the two, Lieutenant Mateescu and Lieutenant Lapusneanu, Took the lead of several regions, including central Moldova , Dobrogea and Baragan.

To pacify the warmongers, King Marcu sent General Patrascu with half of Wallachia's coffers and a peace offer to the new political entity who started to form around the two rebellious Lieutenants. King Marcu didn't had time for rebels when the country needed reforms.

An emergency council , formed by the military and political leaders of Wallachia, gathered and proposed a complete overhaul of Wallachia's politics. Wallachia will change from a corrupt monarchy to a complete Democratic Republic. Also, it will change it's official name to Romania, altough Wallachia will still be an accepted name in external politics. King Marcu appointed a number of temporary Ministers to research the political organization of other democratical states and adapt them to Romania's needs. King Marcu officially abdicated, only to become President Marcu A. Anghel. Nobility will be slowly replaced by their democratic counterparts (even if only in function, as the same people will remain in charge). Quick corrections to the outdated Economical and Territorial laws of Wallachia were made to lower corruption while not upsetting the population too much. Bridge tolls were abolished and several minor taxes were removed to encourage trade and relocation of population.

The President himself oversaw all changes done to the hastily amde Constitution. It will get renewed and revised as soon as things would have calmed down.

While the King only saw more and more issues appearing out of nowhere, the population suddenly realized life became better, even if the reforms were made in a hurry.

In honor of the wise ideas of the King, the Orthodox Churches around Wallachia helped spread the goodwill, offering part of their previously-untaxable income to the Romanian treasury. The President didn't waste any single moment and ordered that the entire sum to be sent as aid for the former citizens of Ada Kaleh and Curtea de Arges . Marcu had plans for the city of Bucuresti, to increase it's size and move Romania's capital officially there.

Also, the President ordered that ALL BORDERS OF ROMANIA WOULD OPEN TO FOREIGN IMMIGRANTS, TRADERS, REFUGEES AND EVEN MILITARY ACCES FOR FREE from March to June.

Interestingly, general Patrascu returned from Moldova with mixed news: Lietenants Mateescu and Lapusneanu took the money and agreed to not use them for military campaigns, but for improvement of life in cities and villages, just like in the rest of Romania. Unfortunately, the two said they will "think about it" when it came to merging the newly-formed dual-monarchy with the newly-organzied Republic of Romania, even if the Moldavian merchants who supported the two lieutenants before changed their minds when they saw Marcu's money offering.

If I’m not mistaken, the traits give me a base -8% for revolt risk, with the downturn giving me +23%... so a net of 15%. Now to determine which of my two hidden traits is giving me that extra 10%. :p
