Riddle of Ages: Travelling Through History

well, I decided to add another verse, this + all the things I have said should suffice

A divided joint venture
Had set their sights
On those few from the hills
That came to preserve
But a leader was a fool
A legend was a coward

The fathers and brothers
The sergeants and captains
Witnessed a defeat
That was hard to equal
Until the rising sun

Earth and water
Turned out to be mud
Earth was weak
Water was stubborn
But water suffered more
And was blamed

That sounds like some colony, just like Jamestown, when the water turned into salt water and the land was bad for crops.

there was a commodore involved (remember I'm not looking for a single person) but his name was not Perry.
In fact, I checked Wikipedia, and Commodore Perry, whichever you meant, wasn't even born during this event :)

A divided joint venture
Had set their sights
On those few from the hills <- this was already correctly interpreted
That came to preserve
'But a leader was a fool'
A legend was a coward

The fathers and brothers
The sergeants and captains

represent two different types of soldiers :)
Witnessed a defeat
That was hard to equal <- this was also correctly interpreted
Until the rising sun <- this too

Earth and water
Turned out to be mud

Eath and water aren't actually earth and water but it are metaphors :)
'Earth was weak'
*Water was stubborn*
But water suffered more
*And was blamed*

The bolded parts are referring to the same

underlined parts are three different persons

and that's all I say for now :)

This is a shot in the dark, but could this refer to the earthquake/tsunami that wiped out Port Royal?

no :)

It's a battle between American and British forces. but the event isn't named battle of xxxxx ;)

no, at this stage Boston was already in rebel hands :)

So, it has to do with Americans, British and Japanese.

Witnessed a defeat
That was hard to equal
Until the rising sun

The Japanese not directly

okay, last hint.

New Ireland.

If you guys don't have it tomorrow I'll give the answer

YES!

A divided joint venture
It was a coöporation between the Massachusettes Militia and the Navy
Had set their sights
On those few from the hills

the 74th regiment of Highland foot (and the 82nd regiment) onder Francis McLean
That came to preserve
they came to preserve the English hegemony in the area
'But a leader was a fool'
the leader is Solomon Lovell who instead of using his momentum to take the fort decided to dig in and besiege the fort
A legend was a coward
The legend is Colonel Paul Revere who acted as commandant of the Artillery

The fathers and brothers
The Massachusetts Militia
The sergeants and captains
The Marines
Witnessed a defeat
That was hard to equal

It was the largest naval defeat of the USA
Until the rising sun
Until Pearl Harbor

Earth and water
the land and water forces
Turned out to be mud
The two forces didn't work together which gave the English time to send reinforcements
Earth was weak
Again General Solomon Lovell
Water was stubborn
Commodore Saltonstall who refused to enter the harbor with his ships to engage the English sloops.
But water suffered more
The navy suffered more than the militia. the loss of marines during the first assault was actually the reason for Lovell to dig in instead of charge.
And was blamed
Saltonstall was declared to be primarily responsible and was court-martialed
of the militia only Paul Revere was dismissed from service because of cowardice and disobedience, he, however, had the charges cleared later.

I suddenly realised that the Japanese had to do with Pearl Harbour, but I was too late :(

New riddle:

The new glory of the old
did not fall, unlike it's master
It's defenders, high and cold
made assault a disaster
One metre high, heroes they were
From the north warriors of great fame
But by their equals beaten they were
And all was changed, even it's name.

Who/what am I talking about? It's fairly easy.
