Rise of Mankind - A New Dawn

Yeah, I know. But to run huge and giant, especially late in game, you need lots of memory and pretty cpu, probably quad core. Actually, I think I saw that Civ4 will only see 3G of memory and thus there is a limit to how big a map you can load, especially with a lot of stuff on the map. Maybe someone can confirm this.

I can't load ROM: AND - when ever I try I get a huge list of missing XMLS untill the game crashes. - I have tried following directions carefully -but to no avail.

I just downloaded this on a whim after suffering Civ V for a while and I'm really glad I did. I'm being nagged by the wife to go shopping but one look at the tech tree was enough for me to realise that this is one amazing piece of work!

I've NEVER downloaded a mod for any game before so perhaps I should thank Civ V for pointing me in this direction?

Has hurrying production with slavery been removed?

Also why won't one of my cities grow from level 4 to level 5? I have all the food requirements and the alert has been popping up that it will grow next turn for the past ten turns.

Gustav: Have you been editing any xml files? If you have go back to the last edit and look for a mistake. If you haven't, you have somehow gotten a corrupted file and will have to locate the error and fix it.

When you have even the smallest error in an xml file you will get an error message, citing a line number in a specific file and some sort of indication of the nature of the error. When that happens, you will get a string of errors thereafter, most of which are not from error in the file but due to the way it reads xml files. Some typical errors are a space character in a line, missing close statements, close statements without the /, double statements: (/unitinfos)
(/unitinfos).

When that happens when the file is read it kicks out an error message, but it keeps trying to read the file and shows an error on everything after. For instance, if you fail to close properly a unitinfos entry it sees the next entry as an error because to the program you have an invalid open statement, which makes the close statement invalid and the entry is another error. When that happens I don't keep hitting enter until I get all the error messages; I just kill the process and then go find the error/s.

Look at the first message and note the file and line number. Open the file in notepad++ or an xml editor and go the that line. Note that the line quoted may very well not be the problem, but the error will be close to it, and either in the same tagline/block or the one before it. The error can be after as well, but will not be far away.

Note that if you have installed 1.75 and 1.75b there will not be any bad xml files. Hope this helps.

Anyone else having a problem where the mod loads, but when you try to start a game it freezes up? I get to the screen where it gives you a tip as it's loading and the bar will get about half way across and it freezes. I then have to ctrl-alt-del and shut it down.

I'm using steam if that matters.

This mod seems amazing, thank you!

One thing that happened to me. Early game, Epic on noble difficulty. Siam emerges and they have a TON more troops than I could have ever possibly made. They proceeded to plow through my empire.

How do I tweak this so its not as insane?

I've barely got three cities with a few archers and the horde appears at my gates. Thats after 4 or so mercenary armies demand 100 gold.

Boygor: right there with you. Once I saw Civ5 was out I did some research and found a lot of general displeasure amongst experienced players. I also read a review that said the only thing he found better was the graphics, and that is debateable. I studied the screenshots carefully and agree; some graphics may be better, but some of them are the same and some not as good. Gameplay trumps graphics any day, anyway. That reviewer recommended installing ROM-AND as it is much better game play.

Now, I was heavily into Civ4 up until about a year ago this month and also into modding. In fact, I was working on incorporating some of the modmods Aforess has folded into ROM, such as DCM, mountains, etc. by merging with the SDK and compiling. Then things happened and I totally dropped out of Civ. Now a year later I find that pretty much everything I was trying to do has been done and then some. And yes, it is the best Civ ever for me (haven't tried Civ5, doubt seriously my machine would run it).

Now, maybe you or someone else can help me find some things. I know I read the review mentioned above somewhere in CFC, and also a review by Aforess but I can't find them. Can someone tell me where they are?

Also, I know I saw some strategy and tip guides for ROM and/or AND but can't find them now? Any help on that?

Now, maybe you or someone else.

tdy99: Are you sure it is freezing up? It takes over 6 minutes to load a game save file from scratch. The first two times I tried starting ROM-AND I thought it had frozen, as I didn't get anything on the screen for 4-5 minutes. Then I happened to start it and went off to do something else and forgot about it. When I came back it was loaded up. Whoowhoo!

Now, it is surprising I can get it to run at all. You see, I am running it in a WinXP guest on a linux host (OpenSuSE 13.0) with an athlon 64 (754) @ 2.2 Ghz and GTS7950gt, 512 M graphics memory, 2G of system memory of which my guest has only 768M available. Yet, it does run well enough to play the game. Yes, it is slow but it was about the same when I ran it in native XP. Once you get loaded reloading a saved game file takes about as much time as it did before, still maybe a couple of minutes. I have it set for low graphics, which are still pretty good, but I don't pay that much attention to graphics, anyway. And I rather doubt I could without Aforess' mods to the game engine.

I did install it as a fresh install of Civ4 in my guest install Civ4 vanilla, patch to latest patch, install BTS, patch to 3.19, installed ROM-AND 175 & 1.75b from .exe installer. Have had no problems.

For those of you having problems: on the Civ4 load screen (the small one) and on the ROM load game screen there are messages above the progress bar telling you what it is doing: Loading Python, loading xml (first screen), init, init graphics, setting up map. Write down the last thing you see and include it in your post, along with any error messages that may come up.

I understand that many people have had trouble getting this to work, but believe me it is worth it. This game really rocks. I think most of the time the problems come from a bad install, files in the wrong path, etc. and are usually easy to fix.

Thanks for responding, Bob. I'm pretty sure it's freezing because the mouse cursor changes from the globe back to just a regular arrow and if I click one of the mouse buttons it makes a ping sound which usually seems to mean a program has frozen. I'm going to try again and give it 10 minutes just to see if anything happens.

tdy99: don't forget to take notes on everything. You haven't given us much info so far. What is your hardware and os, which version of vanilla/bts and ROM do you have installed. Is this a ROM particular problem; does bts 3.19 load and do other mods load?

I have bts 3.19 which works fine. I've been able to get TAM and Star Trek mods to work. ROM and A New Dawn both do the same thing. It will start to load when I start a new game, then I hear the windows "ping" noise and the mouse turns from the stylized CIV4 mouse cursor back into the normal Windows mouse arrow. Then when I minimize the game or press ctrl-alt-del it says Runtime error and the game must be terminated.

I have a problem with the installer for the MOD. When I launch the .exe I don't have the option to choose an install location. It installs to c:\program files\firaxis games\...\...\beyond the sword\mods
After reading another post I installed anyway (my game is installed on E:\) including the patches and just copied the contents to C:\users\...\my documents\my games\...\...\mods and managed to install the MOD in-game. However, everytime I re-start the game the MOD has to be re-installed.
Also has anyone found a solution to playing above Huge maps. Choosing a larger map causes the game to freeze on initialization.
Many thanks.

Whenever I try to install it, everything goes perfectly but when I hit finish there is nothing in the mods folder please help!

Have you searched on it to find where those files end up? If so, that should give you a very large clue about how to change the target directory where you're installing it.

Thanks! That solved everything, but while I play alot the game crashes saying allocating memory failure.

Memory Allocating Failure = two options

#1 Start a new game with smaller maps and/or fewer civilizations with no Barbarian Civs on.

#2 Set your CivilizationIV.ini file to have your game autosave every turn and continue playing, and accept MAFs as they come because your computer just can't handle that much memory unfortunately.

Civ4 can only use 3gb of memory; this is an XP limitation. There is a sticky in the ROM1 thread on how to do this. You have to modify the boot.ini file. Shouldn't that be stickied here, too?

In another thread someone said that with a 3gb limit it is not possible to play the hugh and giant maps to full term because if you do the math 3gb just isn't enough, or something like that. Don't know if that's true.

To the best of my knowledge Civ4 is strictly a 32 bit app, so if you are using any 64 bit OS you may have problems unless you set your OS and Civ4 properly; look elsewhere for details. BTW, there are instructions for installing in Vista/7 in the installation part of this thread. Follow them.

As far as MAF's go, I don't think this has so much to do with the amount of memory available as it does to do with Civ4's memory leakage. Over time the leaks will screw up your memory and you will get MAF's. Try exit to desktop and restart everything and see if this clears that up.

I have found that after a wonder is built my game response goes the crap, even if I close the movie right away. But, if I save the game and reload the saved game response is normal again. Also had this problem when I had a rogue process still running, and eating up all spare clocks, from a flash page even though I had closed the browser. So check your sysmon if you are having trouble as well. Be sure there are no processes running not needed for Civ4.

Now. I HAVE A PROBLEM! This morning when I tried to load my last saved game from last night I got a "Failed to uncompress game data" error and CTD; this comes in the load game screen after the full screen ROM blue earth. Get the same with any saved game file, even ones I know loaded OK yesterday.

Have reinstalled BTS and 3.19 and ROM-AND 1.75 & 1.75b still same thing. In troubleshooting there a few posts about this same error but no replies as to cause. So, does anyone here know about this? Could there be something external to BTS out of whack? What does the engine use to uncompress the game data, anyway?

Sounds like a broken save. It has to do with some of the mod's files changing. Unfortunately I have no idea how to fix it.

No, it is NOT a broken save file. If it was I would have sniffed that out. ALL of my save files give the same result, even back to the first turn save file. And these are files which have been successfully loaded before, even yesterday.

Note also that both BTS and ROM-AND were cleanly installed and still the same problem. Ergo this is something in vanilla 1.74 that has been corrupted or it is external to Civ4. I think I have attached the save file. If it does come through why don't some of you try to open it? AND 1.75b
