Rnes5: To Trust a Thief. Board NES

;) Last time I checked there was nothing between Spanish troops and Paris.

You just didn't lay your claim to the south firmly enough so I decided to take it. Please don't touch 13 either, that belongs to Italy.

Of course, if you're willing to have peace at these borders, I'll repay the two gold I stole from you. I just needed to take them to temporarily disarm you.

From Turkey
To Austria:
We suggest that you leave 46 to us.

to Spain:

Please don't touch 13 either, that belongs to Italy.

How dare Spain make claims for ROME!!!
We told France that we will take 13 ONLY as a last result if somome else like you or Africa gonna take it.

You made yoursef 1 enemy in the north, don't make yourself another one...

Greetings, great powers of Europe. This is Africa.
I'm glad to be able to be a part of this game.

I've noticed this game is different due to actually having Trade, and the problems that come along with trade. Two countries can trade with each other, and both gain, or one country can steal that trade, and gain a little bit, but cost the other country more, so it's a net loss. So it's a classic cooperate-or-compete problem from Games Theory. If everyone competes, the ones who compete first win - but if we can get a few people to consistently cooperate, since cooperation is a net gain, the cooperators will win in the end.

So, in order to solve this problem in a way that the cooperators all benefit, I'd like to propose a free trade association -- let's call it the African Free Trade Association, or AFTA. All the members of AFTA simply agree not to steal each others' trade. No other conditions. We simply keep track of who has stolen trade from an AFTA member, and take them out of AFTA. After a short time, we'll see who can be trusted and who can't, and we will feel free to trade within the group. Since trade is a net gain, everyone in AFTA will benefit, and, frankly, eventually, all the thieves will lose out, since they won't have anyone to trade with. We can also write orders to steal any trade from anyone who is not a member of AFTA, but that is optional. The only requirement is not to steal from the group.

After reading the game history, I think I see that Spain and Rome (Italy) have each stolen trade, and no one else has - is that correct? If that is correct, I will start AFTA membership with everyone else: Austria, France, Germany, Norway, Russia, Turkey, UK/Britain, and, of course, Africa.

I will promise not to steal your trade, or that of anyone else in the AFTA group, as long as you don't steal the trade of anyone else in the AFTA group. If you steal from anyone in AFTA, you will be dropped from AFTA.

Please note that this doesn't mean I am at all hostile to Spain or Rome. I am not declaring war on Spain or Rome. I will still make deals, pacts, etc., maybe even military alliances or cooperate in battle. I just won't trade with them, since I've seen them steal from people who haven't stolen from them, and I have other countries to trade with who haven't done that.

Sincerely, Hannibal

(Thanks, Rome, edited.)

to Africa:
It's Rome not Italy.

to Europe:
Any country joining the AFTA can forget about free free-trade in Rome FOREVER.
Only countries who TELL us they are trading with us and are not members of AFTA can trade with Rome.

We will NOT be joining AFTA.

If someone wants to trade with us, then we will make a 1-on-1 agreement. So far, I have negotiated an agreement with Rome... and that's all.

However, I am very eager to make a deal with Africa and Turkey.

And, everyone should know that I have only stolen gold from France - everyone else is safe in Spain. I do want to iron out the details of any agreements though.

Africa, Turkey, Rome, England - can we talk via PM sometime?

So, France, we need to know about your stance. It's just a game, man ;) you were outmaneuvered. Besides, you didn't stake your claim to the South of France well enough - your army was on the other side of the country! :p

So - can we have peace at these borders, in which case I return the money I took from you? Or must we continue the war until you accept the new borders of France?

To Spain
From France

We were not angry about you taking the southern FRENCH province, we are angry about you stealing again. We are at war, I don't care if it is a war France cannot win, we will not be cheated.

To Britain, Rome and Africa
From France

Spain is a cheat, a lie, and a scoundral. Let me give you a brief history of the relations between France and Spain. In the early days, Spain came up with an elaborate plan to stimulate a fair trade agreement throughout Europe. When France agreed and sent caravans, they were stolen by Spain. Lie and cheat number one. Then, after working out a deal and coming to an agreement of peace and trade, Spain again cheats and steals double the amount this time. Lie and cheat number two. Now, I ask you this: do you want to allow a nation of considerable power and prestige who lies and cheats to be in this world, let alone in the same region as you? I know Rome is a very noble nation, as is Africa for trying to form a free trade pact, and as for Britain, well, we are sure you can prove it. Now I ask you to join France, a victim of a nation who's lies have gone rampant. What say you?

To Germany
From France

We ask for a NAP. Will this do? We are sure you are a very noble and powerful nation, and perhaps we could stregthen the NAP later and turn it into an alliance.

Also, what's up with the non-development of England? If the player doesn't send orders, maybe it should be switched to an NPC :D

To Spain
From France

Send us 3c this turn. Next turn, if it is done, we may have peace at CURRENT borders. But until then, we are at war.

And what assurance do I have that you won't take the gold AND attack me, eh? ;)

If and when my borders are entirely secure, you'll get a gift in reparation for my attack and in hopes of further peaceful cooperation ;)

And again you change your mind. Only you're getting better since you didn't backstab me again. Until you pay us back you shall be at war with France. We cannot trust you anymore.

to Spain:
What assurnace we have that you won't attack Rome? You already cheated France TWICE!
We want no trade reletions with Spain.
