To Rome:
Look, Caesar. I can't just back down just because you tell me to, otherwise you or someone else will just ask for something else next, exactly the same way. For example, isn't Spain going to say exactly the same thing about the Balearics (70)?
But I don't want war, and hopefully neither do you. Neither you nor I are going to be able to gain anything from it. We each earn about the same (you're up $2 now, but we'll be even next turn). Therefore, due to the "ships are really slow in this game" problem, I'm not going to be able to convoy enough troops over to take over Italy, the fact you can build right on it and I can't guarantees that. However, due to the "what a lot of coastline you have" problem that you've got, I'm going to be able to continually harass you for the duration of the war, by invading whatever province you don't have 3 armies continually sitting in, every turn, meanwhile destroying the towns and such you spend so much money building up. In fact, I'll have to do that, all the time, since that will be the only way I will be able to slow you down from building fleets to take back 26. So neither one of us is going to enjoy this war. We're just going to spend lots of money on troops and rebuilding destroyed towns that we could instead spend on trade or building cities; and eventually we're going to come to a peace that's going to be basically the same terms we can reach now, except that we'll have lost many turns and much treasury.
So can't we stop it before it starts? We'll have plenty of better wars to be in later, don't worry - wars that we can actually win. But this one has "long drawn-out useless conflict" written all over it. Let's make peace.
For example, you're not going to even be able to take 26 for at least 3 turns. You will need to build a fleet, move an army on the fleet, then land the army in 26. So for at least 3 turns, you'll have a war for ... nothing. And that fleet will cost you $3 to build, then $1 per turn to support, and the army will cost you $1 per turn to support. So for those 3 turns, you will be spending $3 + ($2 support * 3 turns) = $9! Are you sure you want that? Just for $1 from the province, that only starts 3 turns from now?
I mean, I need to do that, I can't get anywhere without fleets, I'm on a different continent. But you've got plenty of places you can just walk to - Austria, France, Spain, Germany are right next to you.
Here, let's make a deal. Instead, if you accept that I will be taking 26. and promise not to build any fleets in J, K, or L (bordering on my territories), I will pay you $1 per turn. Each turn. It will be almost as good as owning 26 yourself - you won't be able to build a town or city, but those would cost money too, and take even more time. So instead of being down $9, making nothing for 3 turns, and being in an expensive and useless war, you will start making money next turn, and forever. (Agree this turn, I'll start paying you next turn once I see you didn't build a fleet this turn, and so forth.)
I can't offer more than $1 per turn, since otherwise I won't be earning anything from 26. (I'm still going to take a loss on it the first few turns, since I have to maintain that fleet, the army, etc. It'll take time for me to build up 26 and disband my units.)
In exchange, I can promise not to land any troops in Italy, and to stay out of K. Maybe we can even negotiate something to let you build fleets in J or L if you really need them for a war with Spain, or Austria, or Turkey or whoever. But for now you don't. right? So that will cost you nothing, and you will just have that income.
Please respond at least a day before Roddy has to execute moves, or I won't have time to change my orders.
