Role Play Challenge: Tokugawa the Isolationist

Keep it up Mad! These games are alot of fun to follow, and I learn alot from them, even if I'm not good enough for Noble yet

Did you get a random event on the hill directly east of Kyoto? That amount of production doesn't look right.

Yes I did, added 2 hammers if I recall.

Tokugawa the Isolationist: Part IV

Tokugawa looks displeasingly with all the other civilizations that polute the earth. He agrees that trading techs is an needed evil but refuses to open border.

A good round with little action, although plenty of developement. Our rivals are not the worse, and fairly reasonable except for one who is fairly behind in tech.

So first of all, What to do with pacal, we decide to undergo a few trade endevors.

TokuD0000.jpg

TokuD0001.jpg

Yes we made those trades without finding out who is out there, but the last did get us a map and we can see the other leaders.

TokuD0002.jpg

Greece, Ottomans, Germans on one conteinet.

and

TokuD0003.jpg

Maya, Joao, and French on the other. And a very large ubexplored region to our south. Yes, rolo's words keep haunting Tokugawa, explore more, explore more!!!!!

Before I forget a few things

Techpath: Phil/Optics/Liberalism/Gunpowder/Banking.Printing Press/Astronomy/Chemistry/Scientific method

We quickly built a caravel and actually got Magellons Bonus!!!

Also we settled every GP we got except the last one which we will wait to show.

We meet our biggest threat.

TokuD0004.jpg

And make a decent trade

TokuD0005.jpg

We then met the one I was most worried about

TokuD0006.jpg

Except he is pretty far away from optics. By the time he got it we had Astonomy.

We made another trade here

TokuD0007.jpg

Castles in every city that can produce.

Once we get Liberalism

TokuD0008.jpg

Forget these heathen religions.

We met the German

TokuD0009.jpg

Fred doesn't like us much but that's OK, hes' the nicer of the Germans and behind in tech.

We met teh Ottoman

TokuD0010.jpg

And made a trade solidiying the last middle age tech

TokuD0011.jpg

At last we meet the Greek, and the better of the two.

TokuD0012.jpg

He is also the one who founded LIberalism, must have bulbed his way through.

To be continued............

Tokugawa the Isolationist: Part IV continued

The tech picture now.

TokuD0014.jpg

We settled most of those sibgle islands, manning them with Crossbows while we build some of those well promoted Muskets.

TokuD0015.jpg

And we find what I think Rolo was hinting at, a very nice, large continent. And it's uninhabited. Unfortunately, we are sharing it with some AIs by the end.

TokuD0016.jpg

We drop off two settlers quickly there, fast enough to collect some nice land but losing the SW horses and likely the stone, no big deal.

TokuD0018.jpg

And that desert island north of the continent, well that was settled by creative Perciles.

TokuD0019.jpg

Now notice all of these islands are quickly expanding their borders. No I did not build stonehenge. I am running caste system which allows me to run an artist to increase the culture while not expanding the population. Once we teched banking and adopted Mercantilism we got the free artist.

Now that last Great Person? Well we popped a Great Artist, time to use something not shown very often anymore, an old fashioned culture bomb.

TokuD0020.jpg

Let pericles choke on that for a while. And if he wants to declare war, well we have the SoZ AND the police state option.

I saved at this point, we are teching scientific method and looks like we can get there first!!! Opens up first crack at physics and communism.

World map

TokuD0021.jpg

Our cities.

TokuD0022.jpg

Tech

TokuD0023.jpg

Note, the only one I can make is trading chem and Liber or Aston and Lib to Suliman for RP, but since

TokuD0025.jpg

Suliman is tops in power, I don't think so.

We are doing OK in diploacy considering we have no open borders or resource trading.

TokuD0024.jpg

Finally the demographics, doing fairly well in GNP. Production is limited to our main island right now.

TokuD0026.jpg

So I do not think we are doing too badly considering the piece of trash landmass we started with.

So where to now??? I think we need to keep chruning out military for defensive purposes.

Techpath

1) SciMet/physics. Communism is a possibility as SP helps in costs and prodcution but Merc is bit here!

2) RP/rifling.

Techs we DO NOT need: Theology/DR/Music/Mil Trad/Mil Sci.

But I think SM is a big tech now because we NEED to determine where oil is, if we have it.

Maya, Joao, and French on the other. And a very large ubexplored region to our south. Yes, rolo's words keep haunting Tokugawa, explore more, explore more!!!!!

You should had moved faster :p I told you that there was land south of that fish tile ( you could see small strips of coastal in the fish tile , if you looked closely )

In my defense i will tell you what changes I made in the map:
- Switched Japan start with João
- Separated the two big continents ( they had a small strip of land connecting them ... Mad asked for continents )
- Added two of the small islands ( to let Mad get to the southern small continent pre Optics if he was perceptive enough to see the 1 ocean tile separations )
- Added 2 grass tiles south of cooper

The rest is at it came....

Now about the game:

You should move fast to get the spotts that you want... Pericles and Pacal are already in your hemisphere and I would not be surprised if a Ai captured Navajo

Our ottoman friend has rifles, isn't it? ( just look at the power graph...) Not good....

And it is time to think about corps... and of course Sushi ( c'mon ,you're playing Japan without sushi ? ). You have a good amout of sushies, so it would give a nice pop boost to your cities ( if you find a way of getting Mining, it would be even better... )

After reading ur latest update carefully, I only have one question to ask: which one of them u are planning of killing first? Guess domination makes the most sense.

I vote for taking Joan, Pascal & Nappy little island first, and killing them in that order.

The other island is probably too strong to take over now.

Yeah! It always piss me off big time if I have to share stuff with other AIs, especially what I have is so little.

Sushi comes to my mind too. But then again, given this sort of map type, wouldn't State Property make more sense, r_rolo1? I really don't know as I don't have enough experience playing this map time.

Nice, two questions:

1. Don't you have to declare on Pericles since he is on Japanese land?

2. How did you get those religions in your cities? They don't spread without open borders...I think. I'd try your best to spread them.

@Rolo, I couldn't see the islands to jump to until I actually settled the most southern island which I admit I was slow to do! Very nice job of modifying the map, An excellent isolated start!!!!

Yes I settled a little too slow, but then again founding so many cities that far south would have wrecked the economy. I see us getting another city or two on the southern land mass, espcailly after the culture bomb (one right in the middle and another south to assure us of the iron). SM will decide if we are forced into a war.

Now suchi is a dilemma. I like mercantilism yet SP looks pretty good to me as we will need massive production for the SS. But we are Japanese and an RPC without sushi, weel don't seam right. SO we sill look for a GM and GE and save them for the corps. I already settled a recent GM, embarressingly forgetting the corps>

@ NT: Japanese land was determined by myself to end at the three visible single islands once Paal was met. Pericles desert island and those trespassers on the sourthen continent are still being considered. However, the main focus is to retain the Japanese homeland while getting teh space launch.

Regarding religions, even without open borders those religions will spontaneously spread, nothing to do about it. Fortunately, we do have 1 city from teh AP, so we cannot get dogpiled in a war.

@Paul. Those economic civics are a big decision. Lack of foreign trade routes screams for Merc. SP makes sense with the size of the empire although I bet the forbidden Palace in the sourthen continent helps alot there. Sushi for the Japanese flavor.

Regarding victory, Tokugawa is already fed up with tehse inferior civilizations and plans to build the spaceship and leave. SO only a space win is allowed in this RPC!

Oh, one more thing. I am not that anxious about teching corporation just yet. Remember we have the Great Lighthouse and ALL coastal cities.

@Rolo, I couldn't see the islands to jump to until I actually settled the most southern island which I admit I was slow to do!
Actually, you could:

(1) As rolo says, the graphic for the coast in the fog actually spills over into the tiles you see.

(2) If you didn't cut corners with your galley, you would have seen the way to the triple-fish island.

I believe the same thing happened in the Willem game -- you missed some of the reachable terrain because you cut corners, and so never actually spotted it. (At least, in that case, the terrain wasn't very good! ;))

Any ideas what is responsible for the sudden jump in the Suleiman's power rating? That's a pretty sharp rise there, maybe he got a GM --> trade mission --> mass upgrade? Keep a close eye on him once he gets astronomy ;)

^^Lbow ->Rifles most surely ( he has Rifling... just check the tech table: he has RP, but Rifling don't appear in the Can research tab )

I tend to agree, and perhaps he got the free GM by being first to economics -- just a bit staggered by how much of a power lead he has.

Ottomans don't have Economics.... if this is a GM deed , it came from elsewhere.

P.S Pericles got the Economics GM... he and Pacal have it ,but Pacal can't trade it...

Right you are, I was looking at the other bearded guy :crazyeye:

Yes, I believe Suliman has rifling. But he does not have astonomy or chemistry, so we can defend our seas plus we are only 2 techs away from rifling ourselves.

SO regarding defense, I am thinking of SM/physics for those airships which combined with a good navy can keep Suliman off our backs.

if you turn the yeild button on ie the food/gold/hammers button, a coastal sea Square will show 2 coins yeild.

So if you sail your galley AROUND THE OUTSIDE of your coastal squares, you'll get to see any other coastal squares 2 tiles away, and you can reach them via Cultural boarders.

As you said mad, Cost/benifit analasis, you couldn't afford them...and the AI just seems to spam cities, with no reguard for cost.

Don't get complacent on the naval dominance, it'll only last as long as the other dont' tech it/trade it...can be all over in 2 turns...

Suleiman is too powerful for you to attack now and Portuguese, French, and Maya are all a single Hindu block so you don't want to take them on either; the away things are now, I build up an army and go pummel Pericles and the Greeks (since they lead the scoreboard and their power graph is only slightly higher than yours) or maybe Frederick. Your call .. :)

I am playing a shadow game and I have two questions.

Is it allowed to acquire resources through cash? My gold his resource?

If I build Broadway etc.. can I trade a "Hit Musical" for a resource?
