School Leaving Age to Change from 16 to 18 in UK

Good, because people will probably be more mature. Although that's hoping for the best.

This can be a good thing if and only if serious thoughts is given to that "some form of training". It would be really pointless to force people to stay in school just for the sake of it, and frankly if people don't want to stay in school I 'd rather have them in an apprenticeship learning a job than in a classroom.

Sounds like good news to me. Are there many jobs in the UK available for those that do not go to a university?

Oh yeah, plenty of McDonald'ss about.

Is university just known as college in America?

I attend a college. The difference between a college and a university in America is typically that universities are public and much larger schools (anywhere from 5,000 kids +). The college I go to only has 1,300 people and is private.

So Columbia University... Meadow Soprano from Sopranos says that she goes to a "college", while she's at Columbia "University". Care to explain?

Is this when you can leave school unilaterally? When I dropped out of high school, I had to have my mothers' permission, since I was 17 at the time.

(I would have been 18 in two weeks, but it would have been a waste of my time and their resources.)

I guess that'll be the only place I'll ever be able to get a job, if I ever can.

I stayed on until I was eighteen, but I failed all my exams. At the school I went to many left at the age of 14.

My dad left school at 14, and he has four houses.

Can't you get a GED (Basically a High School degree for dropouts) in the UK? Its better than nothing I'd think.

I'm sorry.

What? You say sorry for no reason! I was saying that he doesn't matter if you have no qualifications, because you can always make a fortune.

Well I guess college is just the generic term for attending some academic institution after high school. More specifically the terms college and university have different features, but in a normal conversation people just say, "Yeah Im going back to college in a couple of days" or something like that. People don't use the term university in everyday talk unless using the actual name of their university.

Well explained. Thank you.

I don't think there is, unless I want to become something like a car mechanic.

I'll never be able to.

How amusing of the government to raise the number to one to which the majority of school leavers are unable to count.

Bit harsh, but funny.
