It has been a while since the last elimination thread. I think many people enjoy them and personally I am really curious for everyone’s opinion on the best civ/leader for achieving SCIENCE VICTORY. @kryat started the diplo victory thread in October last year, after which the music theme thread ran for a while. The rest of the below is a ‘copy paste’ from Kryat’s earlier post.

Rules:
- Roughly every 24 hours you may vote. You add one point to one feature and take away three points from another.
- Posts with missing upvote or downvote are skipped. Only voting posts are allowed in this thread.
- You must write a reason for each upvote and downvote. We are rating civs mainly regarding power but flavour is also taken into account.
- Voting many times for the same thing is allowed, though it is really recommended to spread your votes among many civs if possible because at some point it starts being annoying and unfair.
- Delete the previous voters comments, and indicate your comments in some way (bold, italicize, color, something that will draw attention)
- We only vote basing on CURRENT power of unique features based on MOST RECENT PATCH for Gathering Storm.

You are free to rationalize your selections however you wish. You are encouraged to include any aspect of the civilization/leader including unique infrastructure, units, or abilities.

34. Qin Shi Huang/China [20]
35. Robert the Bruce/Scotland [21] = 20 + 1 probably not the best, but very underrated imho. They do seem a little weaker in gs than r&f though. I still say science and production is better than science alone
36. Saladin/Arabia [20]
37. Seondeok/Korea [20]
38. Suleiman/Ottomans [20]
39. Shaka/Zulu [20]
40. Tamar/Georgia [20]
41. Teddy Roosevelt/America [20]
42. Tomyris/Scythia [17] = 20 - 3 I can't think of anything that helps here. I'm not counting her ability to conquer, I thought about it, but if you include that, then most civs would have a science edge which isn't true. And what if she has an isolated start?

20. John Curtain/Australia [20]
21. Kristina/Sweeden [17]= 20-3 I think it is hard to steer her towards this type of victory especially if there are other civs in the game that have a greater inclination or abilities
22. Kupe/Maori [20]
23. Lautaro/Mapuche [20]
24. Mansa Musa/Mali [20]
25. Matthias Corvinus/Hungary [20]
26. Montezuma/Aztec [20]
27. Mvemba a Nzinga/Kongo [20]
28. Pachacuti/Inca [21]= 20 + 1 I am simply impressed by how the Inca can skyrocket in science (pun intended) due to their growth abilities, their strategic isolation behind mountains and also the early access to areas other Civs cannot until much later.

35. Robert the Bruce/Scotland [21]
36. Saladin/Arabia [20]
37. Seondeok/Korea [21] (20+1) Now that there are mechanisms for district purchasing the aztecs have probably lost their #1 slot to Seondeok in my mind...
38. Suleiman/Ottomans [20]
39. Shaka/Zulu [20]
40. Tamar/Georgia [20]
41. Teddy Roosevelt/America [20]
42. Tomyris/Scythia [17]
43. Trajan/Rome [20]
44. Victoria/England [20]
45. Wilfrid Laurier/Canada [17] (20-3) Trying to think of advantages... Bonus culture which comes too late, access to mountains in tundra that nobody else can easily get. Not much really. Sorry Wilfrid, you're my favourite leader but this isn't your strong suit.
46. Wilhelmina/Netherlands [20]

1. Alexander/Macedon [20]

16. Harald Hardrada/Norway [20]
17. Hojo Tokimune/Japan [20]
18. Jadwiga/Poland [20]
19. Jayavarman/Khmer [17] (20-3) Weak at almost everything. Only growth helps with science, and that’s pretty minimal. Will probably start away mountains, has no fast access to pantheons, and probably wants to build holy sites first. Jesuit education is probably his best play, but that’s a stretch, since he gets no bonuses to faith generation.
20. John Curtain/Australia [20]
21. Kristina/Sweeden [18] (17+1) Way to early to vote down. Bonus great scientist and engineer points with universities and factories is an incentive to build both campuses and IZ and means you’ll probably be on the leading science edge for most of the game, and have early access to the most relevant great people. You also have a an almost lock for Nobel prizes which can skyrocket your science progress. Sweden is top science tier.
22. Kupe/Maori [20]

45. Wilfrid Laurier/Canada [17]
46. Wilhelmina/Netherlands [20]

1. Alexander/Macedon [20]
2. Amanitore/Nubia [20]
3. Catherine/France [17] = 20 - 3. Doesn't really have any direct bonuses for science or production. Does have spy bonuses which can steal techs or sabotage other players districts but playing from behind isn't an ideal strategy for a science victory.
4. Chandragupta/India [20]
5. Cleopatra/Egypt [20]
6. Cyrus/Persia [20]
7. Dido/Phoenicia [20]

43. Trajan/Rome [20]
44. Victoria/England [20]
45. Wilfrid Laurier/Canada [17]
46. Wilhelmina/Netherlands [21] = 20 + 1. The river bonuses for campuses and industrial zones can make Wilhelmina a powerhouse.

11. Gandhi/India [17] (20-3) Extra faith will only help in the most tangential way. Ghandi's own ability isn't as good at preventing war as Wilfred's.

34. Qin Shi Huang/China [20]
35. Robert the Bruce/Scotland [21]
36. Saladin/Arabia [20]
37. Seondeok/Korea [22] Almost every aspect of this civ is focused on science: Campus replacement that's cheaper and gives automatic +4 science with +1 science to adjacent mines, and +3% science in cities with governors. I don't know about you guys, but I think they're a contender for #1.
39. Shaka/Zulu [20]
40. Tamar/Georgia [17] An overall poor civilization, and with no direct bonuses science, and even then her indirect bonuses to science via Golden Ages and religion bonuses are weak.
41. Teddy Roosevelt/America [20]
42. Tomyris/Scythia [17]

17. Hojo Tokimune/Japan [20]
18. Jadwiga/Poland [20]
19. Jayavarman/Khmer [17]
20. John Curtain/Australia [22] = 21 + 1 While Korea will probably end up winning this, Johnny really has no problem getting high adjacency campuses. It's not that hard to avoid lowering the appeal of the tile, especially with the buffs to lumbermills you can leave that forested hill and lumbermill it. Honestly not that far behind Korea.
21. Kristina/Sweeden [18]
22. Kupe/Maori [17] = 20 - 3. Really nothing here to help except they can possibly get some large cities and maybe they can build campus next to reef, but so can everyone else. Flexibility for city sites is nice, but so much depends on luck.
23. Lautaro/Mapuche [20]
24. Mansa Musa/Mali [20]
25. Matthias Corvinus/Hungary [20]
26. Montezuma/Aztec [20]

44. Victoria/England [20]
45. Wilfrid Laurier/Canada [17]
46. Wilhelmina/Netherlands [21]

Certainly hope we can get some greater participation. Science victory is the default victory type for many people (or at least myself) and it's worth noting which Civs are stronger in this area. Otherwise this will take forever. Maybe if Firaxis actually announces something things will pick up around here.

46. Wilhelmina/Netherlands [21]

In my experience, science victories tend to drag on the longest. I think civs that are strongly geared towards culture are going to get downvotes from me because they're so likely to win in that way before an SV... unless you ignore their abilities, and then what's the point?

I'm not counting her ability to conquer, I thought about it, but if you include that, then most civs would have a science edge which isn't true.

I personally agree with that stance, but others can and will point out that conquering other civs makes winning a scientific victory easier. That's the problem with these victory-centered elimination threads... conquering most of the map will pretty much always make it easier to achieve.

10. Frederick/Germany [21] (20+1) At some point the science grubbing nerds have to go outside and actually build the projects + laser stations, and I have always found production to be supremely useful for science; especially when Hansa spam grants a lock on all the space GEs and the extra district slot means I can have my early campus cake and eat it too. (And then take all the space GSs as well.)

7. Dido/Phoenicia [21] (20+1) Just won a SV with her this week. A Free Inquiry Golden Age with her is a crazy boost to science. Spreading far and wide allows you to build your victory district in large numbers, in this case, campuses. You can do the standard tricks of move capital, Casa, colonial taxes, etc. to make the bulk of your empire rich in production and gold. And the gold - so much gold to buy spaceports and workers for space projects.

22. Kupe/Maori [18] (17+1)Played a lot of Kupe, got a sub 200 victory on deity. The thing is you really have to play a civ to comment on its ability to SV which is why these voting threads are just poor. Kupes exploration and CS gaining ability early is a huge help as is the ability to find remote chop land early. The faith he can build with earth goddess or the rapid food+production of god of the sea makes him a lost stronger than many realise. He is for the advanced play SV, the harbours for free inquiry are good but free inquiry also gives 50% eurekas. The reef +2 adjacency is the change that really made him a contender. Not the best out there but does not deserve a negative at this stage IMO.

One may argue it gives them some SV ability, but looking through the list, I see every civ has something and a single eureka is not blinding. Faith is underrated for SV’s it is just so handy and speeds many things up. France... 20% off Kilwa, Big Ben, Oxford and Ruhr, good stuff.

The thing is you really have to play a civ to comment on its ability to SV
I partly agree, to really feel how strong a civ is at a SV you'd have to try and see. But since I'll never play every civ for every victory condition, I think these elimination threads are really useful to learn how others have experienced the many civs I haven't tried a SV with yet. :)
