I think the stuff on the right side is maybe clay. It's definitely different from the stuff on the left side. I think that you're right about the later. It seems to be copper.
Some buildings are built on city tiles themselves. We could see Palace, Monument and Granary. Looks like there's not enough place for anything else except for walls.
Lighthouses seem to be in weird locations, like in screenshot 2 the great lighthouse takes up one hex and it looks like a harbor takes up the other hex, yet in between these 2 hexes is a lighthouse... Yet there's only 2 water hexes and 3 buildings. In the third screenshot a lighthouse is in a weird position also.

This is really disappointing. These look cartoony, and literally worse than the Civ V graphics, not just in style but purely in terms of quality of rendering. Am I missing something?
One of my biggest hopes for this game was that the world itself would look more...worldly - something you could zoom out and get a great sense of an *Earth*, like you do in EUIV or something. This looks like the opposite of that. I especially hate the hard corners on the borders, like CIV BE has - just looks terrible.
I don't want to be negative, but after years of waiting...this is disappointing.
I'd rather play the game then spend hours per playthrough waiting to be able to play it while looking at it.
If I want a realistic picture of what the world looks like, it's a short trip from my computer to the front door, but I can't in good conscience do Civ actions IRL.
Thousands of hours in the series, but I just can't get past how dumb this looks. The screenshots are telling me LOUDLY that they aren't making Civ for me anymore.
Inspired me to quickly do my own version. I personally would probably want it to look a bit like this:
Spoiler:
Probably -too- desaturated for most people, but I like it.
Other changes include:
- Quick and dirty ground textures for the Forests (just to get some color, also didn't do a good job at cleaning up the forests in the distance)
- Sharpened edges (and a tiny bit of depth of field)
- Darker Shadows
- Took your version and layed it on top of the original
- Added atmospheric and depth of field in the background
- Enhanced the mountains textures, rivers and ocean
- Some post effects
I think it looks more a less like Civ5 now looking at it, but for me that would have been the minimum... Having a before/after is quite shocking how saturated the original is...
I'm just saying that I don't think you can win a diplo victory in real life by nuking people, unless you have a...liberally applied definition of "diplomatic" and "victory".
