SGFN-05: India Stomps the World

I'm glad I said that about the SGL's then! Yeah, they're quite like MGL's, they're at least as fast as Horses.

Rodent, about Iron; are you not using that as a crutch? (a bit like some people use Agricultural civs as a crutch).

I think we need to kill Germany before they build swords and kill us, as they have Iron hooked up to at least one town. Therefore, the mini SOD needs to take out Germany's Iron, not go chasing Babylonian Iron. I think some horsemen will go a long way toward getting that Iron anyway. Besides, isn't Babylon our next target? Let us focus on Germany, we are close to sandbagging by not going after them. The archers can be used first, then horses. Let us worry about Iron later, as we will soon have 2 move Swords with 5 hp real soon. (Ancient Cavalry) I think with Horses, ACs, and soon to be WEs, Iron will not be hard to get.

Time for a roster update, and our hit list, as far as I can tell.

1: TheOverseer714=> on deck
2: Optional=>warming up
3: ThinkTank=> waiting
4: Jorgo Mono=> waiting longer
5: Anaxagoras=>sometime soon
6: Northen Wolf=> later this month
7: Rodent=> just played
8: akk47=> up

Hit list:
1. Germany
2. Babylon
3. Greeks
4. Aztecs
5. Portuguese
6. Iroquois
7. Vikings

I like Iron mostly because the RNG is nasty to me when i fight with Horsemen

Spoiler for SGL :

It has 3 movement points, just like an army. It is kinda cheating to give away GL rushed in some small border village, and capture it back, before learning education.

Sorry guys, I'm afraid I have to pull out of this one. Last week I started working on a new contract which is going to last for a year and there's no way I can combine that with 4 SGs. I'll be lurking of course!

We Understand :)

heres a new Roster

1: TheOverseer714=> on deck
2: Optional=>warming up
3: Jorgo Mono=> waiting
4: Anaxagoras=>Waiting Longer
5: Northen Wolf=> even longer
6: Rodent=> just played
7: akk47=> up

Real life has to take precedence, I sure understand that. Sorry to lose your play skills, but we'll still have and appreciate your advice and guidance as a lurker. In other "news", akk47 where are you? Are you still interested in this? I will wait til tuesday and then I'm going declare a skip and take the save, gotta keep the momentum going.

No problems, Thinktank. I would like to thank you for the part you took in this game. I liked your insights. Your bit on the settler factory was an eye opener for me, I really learnt from that. I'm looking forward to see you again here!

I had a closer look at the save, to try and come up with some ideas for strategy. I spotted a lot of things that I hadn't seen yet, but that are important for us to know:
* Babylon and Greece are at peace with each other.
* Iroquois and Aztecs are at war with each other.
* Germany have Horses hooked up.
I was actually trying to see whether Aztecs would be interested in an alliance with us against the Germans, but with them fighting the Iroquois already that becomes difficult.
The Iroquois do not have their Mounted Warrior yet. The Germans are the only civ on the map besides us with Horses hooked up (info from CivAssist). It seems foolhardish to send some Archers over to German territory now; they are ready to receive us, and we are not ready to take them on. You can't fight Horses with Archers.
It wouldn't be sandbagging to not fight Germany yet. If you're not ready, you're not ready, and you have to make yourself ready. We need a bigger military, and we need to expand towards Germany more. We can fit in another town beyond Lahore. Ideally we would have a bit more roads leading towards Germany.
How do others feel about these thoughts?

I think that we should send the stack to take out Germany's horses before they build a bunch. Also, they have Iron hooked up. Getting into a defensive mindset is a sure way to lose an AW game. The stack has enough offense to take out one town, maybe two. The longer we wait, the stronger Germany gets. If we keep waiting, we will be facing pikemen, maces, and knights. Send the stack now and do what damage we can, while building horses to replace the lost troops. All a bunch of archers sitting around does is use up our unit support, keeping us from building better units. Strike now, while Germany is still weak.

I'm glad it's not me up next, cos this would have put me for a dilemma. I'm happy for others to go attacking with Archers, but I've always been pretty woeful at in my games. Like sending 10 Archers/Swords who all fall at the hands of a couple of Spearmen. Last time I tried it I had 15+ units, mostly Archers, against Spearmen; same result. The thing is, if my first 4 or 5 Archers all die with just taking 1 hitpoint off a Spear, then I tend to go on attacking, thinking that my luck will change. Of course it doesn't. I ended up frustratingly quitting that game after losing 15 units with still a couple of Spearmen standing. No Archer rushes for me anymore.

So I've learnt to accept the dominance of the fortified Spearman in the AA. In my own games I rather attack a little later when I've got more advanced units and a more developed empire. I rather see the tactics of others deployed in this game and try to learn from that, but in my own games I indeed start off quite defensively. The first wars are often fought in my own territory, and on initiative of the AI. But then I use the advantage that fighting in my own territory gives me to weaken the enemy first.
And my default strategy involves building up a warchest that I use for upgrading units.
I'm not afraid to get over my support limit. Once I counted 40 native workers in my game, while I had only 10 towns. I was in Republic, so I was 4 times over my support limit on workers alone. But I rather accept a financial squeeze than not building what I feel I need to build.
The tactics chosen in this game are very different from my own, but I'm curious to see how it pans out. I'm just not sure whether you can expect a strike expedition in my turnset when I feel the timing isn't right.

Well, I'm back. I quickly caught up with the posts. I agree with Overseer that we need to take on Germany sooner rather than later. We need to take away their resources, and any towns we can take out aren't building units we have to fight later.

Let's go get 'em.

So, people now see my scouting is useful :)

Knowing where enemy and its resources are is good. I'd say don't turn back archers, let 'em go, 15 archer is better than 0 and every town we take weakens Germans. I'd say next player tries RNG luck

Yah, 10 pages and no posts does indicate a decided lack of interest. I will try PMing him, but you are most likely correct.

I'm gonna rant now a bit:

I see a quite a discrepancy between what we're building and what we want to do. Looking at the save we're now working from, I'm counting:
* 3 towns building a settler
* 2 towns building a worker
* only 1 town building a unit; Madras, and it's only doing 2 shields a turn

We've been playing peacenik style from the beginning and we still are. The players that now want to attack Germany are the same players that were in favour of peaceful expansion earlier. How can you advocate building granaries and settlers yet at the same time say you want to attack your opponants? Beats me.

Two reasons for building settlers and workers-

1) to Reduce the population, lux slider goes ridiculously high

2)to grab more land, which is always good
