SGFN-08: Random AWM Succession Game

lurker's comment:

Actually, this has demonstrated what an advantage this gives Persia - they get to build an MDI unit until RPs at 75% of cost; or looked at another way, they can (almost) match a DG AI for production.

lurker's comment:

Since I'm such a nice guy, :mischief: and have nothing better to do, I re-ran the test until the GA finished, and it is as I suspected - Persia doesn't build MDI.

Probably that it truw as the newer unit has the same stats for Immortal & Hoplite. It would be a little bit strange, if from that point on you have to invest 10 more shields for the same unit.

The Gallic Sword is a completely different thing. Her my theory of Golden Age should work ;)

Meh. I will try to play tonight, but my RL schedule just got filled up. I hope to play later tonight though, if not I will get it up tomorrow. (or skip me)

Lurkers Comment:

They had to add the Imm to MDI path to allow the next upgrade, but it is some sort of phoney path. Several UU run into the same issue, in order to go onward, they need the hook. All UU can be built, if all other conditions met, till the GA starts.

The faux upgrades, still work for those that cannot actually make the upgraded unit, like Imm to MDI. At least that is how I remember it.

What is the location of another city that we might found, or are we now collecting settlers?

Without looking at the save offhand, something CxC from Dutch Treat along the coast would be spiffy. There should be fairly obvious spots to do that. Leave as much room for other cities as possible.

I am about to play. Quick question, if a get a MGL, what do I fill the army with?

I'd think longbows, for the added firepower.

Keep on building longbow armies until we can get that coveted crusader army. Then we launch the 1st Crusade!

Ok, I only got enough time to take one turn yesterday, so I hope finish today.

Took me long enough.

Spoiler :
Prep: Finally playing with CAII, hopefully it helps. Amsterdam will waste one shield but there is nothing I can do. Hit space and...

IBT: Bab's finish Sun Tzu's. Amsterdam Spear > Spear. Rotterdam Horse > Longbow.

560 AD (1): Move to settle on forest south of Heidelberg the Second. Move all unit's to the mountian at the choke. Send 2 galleys off to explore Scandinavia. Begin to drain swamp for the Canal city. Start a couple mines. Hit Space.

IBT: Greek's send in 2 horses to choke, Persia sends 2 immortals. Both out of range. Greek Archer, Horse, and Longbow move into range.

570 AD (2): Arty goes 6 for 6. The RNG loves me. 3 eHorsemen attack, taking no casulties but some minor damage. No leaders. One eHorse exposed. I examine the situation and decide to send a spear to cover. Go to build a city next to Dutch Treat, game tells me "Konigsburg." I decline and name it Woodstock.

IBT: About 5 units head straight for the workers. Nurnberg Longbow > Longbow, Konigsberg Treb > Treb

580 AD (3): I won't go into the details, but I killed all 5 units without taking a single casulty or leaving a unit severly exposed. Found Heidelberg next to HTS. It's what the game picked.

IBT: Greeks and Persians attack. We lose a eHorse and a vSpear that were exposed. Berin Longbow > Longbow. Dutch Treat Worker > Worker. Stuggart Longbow > Longbow

590 AD (4): Check the Military Advisor. He finially says we are average to all civs. Kill both greek longbow and horse within range, but inadvertandly leave one eHorse exposed to Immortals. :wallbash:

IBT: 3 Viking galleys move towards our shores, 2 reach, but nothing lands. Rotterdam Riots. Missed the CAII alert. Leipzig Settler > Settler. Utrecht Treb > Galley. Edinhoven riots. Not my best turn. Corrupted to hell anyway... :wallbash: Greeks are building Knight's Templar.

600 AD (5): Found Nuremberg 2 SE of Woodstock. Frankfurt grows agian and is about to riot. Move in an MP. Same for Nurnberg. Also, the Viking Iron is on their island, so even though it still may be on the coast, I have about 4 unexplored tiles left. Redline unit's at the chokepoint, refrain from attacking to prevent exposing another unit.

IBT: Viking's move galleys towards newly founded undefended cities, there was a tiny gap in our blockade. Eindhoven Spear > Horseman. Hannover Aqueduct > Market.

610 AD (6): eHorse attacks redlined Immortal and loses. Next eHorse attack's and loses 2 hp before finially winning. But he is left exposed. I must leave another vHorse also. The Viking Iron is on the coast, I just discover. There is some hope, though.

IBT: Both horses retreat, one is attacked agian and loses though. Gronigen Worker > Treb. HTS Aqueduct > Horse

620 AD (7): Upgrade 4 cats. Upgrade 2 Elite* Archer's to Longbows. No casulties or exposed units at the choke this time. I felt these upgrades were necessary because I have 10+ units at the chokepoint.

IBT: Russian's want to talk, I agree to talk then slay their emmisary. They wanted 40 gold anyway. 4 more unit's into the choke. Amsterdam Spear > Longbow. Knight's Templar is completed in Hamburg. Golden Age begin's. Income Jump's from 41 to 118. Hamburg KT > Longbow. Konigsberg Treb > Treb. Nurnberg Longbow > Horse. Bonn Treb > Galley.

630 AD (8): Upgrade our last 3 cat's. Lose one horse but kill 3 immortals and 3 greek horsies.

IBT: Viking's have landed 2 sword's at Dutch Treat/Woodstock. GL net's Gunpowder, I can see saltpeter next to Utrecht. It is roaded. Berlin Longbow > Musket. Leipzig Settler > Settler. Koln Aqueduct > Longbow. Stuggarat Longbow > Musket.

640 AD (9): Move a vSpear, a vHorse, 2 trebs and a wounded longbow into Dutch treat. Move and eHorse and a wounded horse into Woodstock. Take out 3 immortals at choke with no hp lost and 1 promotion to elite.

IBT: Viking's attack Woodstock and lose! Looks like all my preparation for a counter-attack was in vain. First Persian Knight's appear at choke. I needed the spear army to cover unit's, there were to many immortals coming in to leave unit's exposed. :( Rotterdam Longbow > Musket. HTS Horse > Musket.

650 AD (10): Kill one Immortal at choke. I notice a new Greek city south of Choke. (Old since I saw settler a while ago. I just noticed though.) Found Rock am Ring 2SW of Salzburg.

Not a bad turnset at all, but you need to not leave units exposed if at all possible. Remember that wounded units usually don't attack and have a higher chance of losing if they do. The mountain has a fort and should make a Spear like a musket or better, so if you don't have to, leave the last wounded unit on a tile alone. Look on the bright side though, you helped ease our unit support woes... :) Golden age, hmm, i shoulda foresaw that.

Yay, we got Templar!
I forget were we spending towards gunpowder?
We were planning an assault on Greece. Is SunTzu's worth it to plan to hit Persia first? I really need to look a the save...

Yeah, this is actually my first turnset with the choke (I had to take a couple skip's) and it took me a while to get the hang of it.

EDIT: Somebody said they hoped we catch a break, look's like we caught it. ;)

I personally want to go for the Viking's, they have Iron on the coast, and are a small Island. We need Astronomy though.

Excellent, fantastic, unbelievable! Gunpowder from the GLib, saltpeter already connected, the Knights Templar finnished and the GA started at a very good point of time!

The game is ours now.

It turned out to be a very good idea to go lone scientist to Gunpowder, Overseer! :goodjob: Saved us a lot of gold.

Iron: forget about it, what do we need it for now? Let's go straight for Athens. Taking Scandinavia will only lose time.

Haven't had time to look at the .sav yet, but I suggest the following midterm plan:
  • Use Golden Age to go to Military Tradition full-speed.
  • Prepare a pre-build for the Military Academy
  • Take Athens using a Crusader Army and a decent trebuchet/longbow stack.
  • Secure the choke point with 2-3 muskets and then send the Spear Army on a pillaging excursion...
  • Take the rest of the world with Cav Armies... :king:

Remind me, what does Athens have that we want (other than a chance to break Greece?)

By the way, I often read the forums at work with the game not available so sorry if some questions can be easily answered by looking at the save.
