SGOTM 05 - Gypsy Kings

I still can't play.
The problem is that i am looking at the save through Remote Desktop connection to my home PC and it is like to look at a picture gallery. And ofcource i'm at work too.

edit: we are in police state and we can't even rush. IMO that means defeat very soon. I can't understand why we didn't build SY and spies - that is a very clear anti space race strategy when you are not much behind. IMO this is the final mistake from which we will loose the game. Very possible that it is already lost.

Like Homer Simpson says: D'OH! I agree, how did we not think to set up spies?

If I understand AlanH right, we have until noon GMT on 11/2 to finish, so we can discuss our final options.

I think we might push population (farm over workshops and cottages) to see if we can get a diplo after taking out Qin. How to stop Cyrus' ship is the issue.

We can make SY in 11 turns in either Seville or Barcelona ... I prefer Barc because it is not right on our border so not at risk of capture if a war. Then we can make spies every turn to our limit of four. We are 14 turns to composites (modern armour), but do we need that? Go 0 sci for 11 turns so the spies have money to spend.

We have an airport in Madrid (if spies can be airlifted) and in Turfan ... to speed troops to the China front.

Alternative is to reaseach fission (8 turns), make manhattan (10 turns), then we have 4-5 turns per nuke in our best cites (Turfan, Barc, Seville) ... and does Cyrus have SDI by now? Looks like not since manhattan is not made yet.

Spies in action in 12 turns, vs nukes in action in 23 turns ... Cyrus has the space elevator, so I think we won't see 23 turns.

Only chance as I see it is to push pop, go for spies, take over China and maybe we can intercept his engine at the last minute if we have to, and sneak in a diplo.

edit: if we revolt to USuff (2 turns), we could cash rush SY ... at 0 SCI, 1142 gpt ... 6700 rush will get smaller each turn after end of anarchy ... maybe 2T anarchy, 2-3 turns of hammers invested and cash stored and we can rush it ... first spy in 6 turns perhaps? This looks like our Obi-wan Kenobi (i.e. our only hope).

So who wants to play this out to the end today? I can, but I have played so much lately, someone else should if they can. Who is good with spies (I am not)?

For whomever does play, there are 6 transports in the recently taken Chinese city, about 11 battleships off Beijing, bomber wing in our new China conquest, and airports in Turfan and Madrid to airlift more troops to China.

Qin is sending his navy to pillage our seafood ... once we have a city on his mainland, send our fleet to defend our shores. Save a few warships to escort transports to the distant last China island city ... there is also a distant last Japanese island city, whose pop we might want for the diplo.

I can't. :( Also I have yet to build a spy or a nuke in my Civ4 career. :crazyeye:

And given the time constraints, I wouldn't bother with the "have played much lately" issue. Unless, of course, you're too tired/bored of playing this game.

In any case, I just wanted to congratulate you and the rest of the gang who have been putting so much effort in this hard-fought battle. :hatsoff: :worship:

I am happy to play it out, but I think that should be a last resort, considering how much I have played it in the last few days. So if no one else claims it, I suppose I will be playing tonight. ;) I have built a few spies in my career ... but I think R1 has more experience.

I'll try to get some turns in this afternoon.

I'm loading up now, will make spies top priority and see if we can prevent launch!

I have time to play now... but just in case you don´t have the time to finish the game... good luck with the spies

And by the way: I solved the problems with the installation of BTS. I am looking forward to play it. Hopefully soon!

So is R1 playing now or is Lehm playing now?

It looks like R1 said we was playing in his 2:16 post ... Lehm, what is your bedtime? In case R1 finishes up in time for you to play some.

We should probably send our transports half to the isloated Island China city and half to the isolated Japan city once we have a beachhead in main China, to get that pop to be ours ASAP.

And load up defenders in our border cities, and make some bunkers, if Cyrus attacks after the spies do their damage.

It is over, Cyrus launched IBT 2000/2001, I was still building SY. At least we can now read if anyone else had success.

Not a big surprise, I suppose

Still, not a bad comeback ... if we had built SY earlier we might have had a chance to stop him (how did we miss that? Tunnel vision I suppose, too focused on the wars ...).

We have to stop being in the position of needing these big comebacks in the future!

The GK record to date:

Four games played: SGOTM 2 -5

1 Bronze Laurel (SGOTM 03, tie)

1 "Tin cup" (fourth place, SGOTM 04, tie)

2 Games met victory condition (SGOTM 02 and 03)

3 Games won (SGOTM 02, 03, 04)

4 Games completed

NO games conquest defeat

NO wooden spoons

Other teams have done worse ...

I enjoyed playing with our old and new members :goodjob:, and I have learned some new insights (sadly, I learn more from losses than from wins usually)

I hope we can get the group back together for the next one! ;)

Pleased to see you finished, GK :goodjob: Sorry to see you missed the launch :(

What we missed was Scotland Yard! :hammer2: We had good shot at a back door diplo if we had been able to prevent Cyrus' launch, or maybe a late dom. We were never heading for a launch of our own (maybe we should have).

Excellent finish Llib_rm!

We are beat by team Murky Waters already. They had excellent results with their barbarian allies, capturing Persepolis and Persagadae along with 5 other cities!

The above is from the OSS thread ... we certainly did not get that much benefit from our barb allies. Maybe they got to BW way ahead of us, or maybe the random barb appearance was very different from team to team?

If we had particularly lame barb allies, that might in part explain why this went so poorly for us (along with decisions that in retrospect were not the best).

Well, it´s over. We lost but next time we will be better!!! I enjoyed playing with you guys and like dV said I hope for us playing together in the next SGOTM

Congrats on your persistence, guys!

Murky Waters prioritized barb axes from teh start. We bee-lined BW to get it before barbs started spawning. That gave us a 1 in 3 chance of spawning warriors, archers or axes. We also manipulated things a bit in terms of declaring peace to send our barb allies toward someone else...

For any spectators who look at our power chart on the results page, and ask "why didn't they just take out Cyrus?" (see panel 1 below),

I present the answer (see panel 2 below)

Why didn't yo guys just NUKE Cyrus?...

EDIT: I remember one of my first CIV games where I got to a similar position, one AI had just way too much power and cities and all that. I just nuked the living crap out of him. Worked. His territory was all orange...
