SGOTM 17 - The Shawshank Redemption

The pure build numbers are a little misleading, because we simply had more cities to whip in the late game and fewer worries about things like cold whipping, or whipping away high yield tiles.
Could you please explain that relationship. I don't get it.

For most of the part we didn't use horses at all, perhaps a pillaging chariot or so.
The main force consisted of war machines, xbows and land-knights. The horses were whipped to kick Peter's butt and we had a bit too many of them in the end.
The rest were the ones joining last few Toku cities as the slow moving troops would not reach the targets.
At that point (start building horses) we had a lot of cities and nothing better to whip.

Also we were afraid to go into deep financial trouble, even planning 3turn revolt but it turned out the capture pace was strong and we ended w/ 2k in the bank, so whipping/upgrading was no issue.

Sorry, my explanation was a little elliptical.

Our set-up period ended in T98, when we revolted back into Vassalage and Slavery. At that point we had 8 large cities, with varying degrees of development (Granaries in almost every city, Barracks in some, RHs in two, a Forge in one). There was no stack… maybe a Sword and a Xbow, at most.

The next fifty turns were devoted to conquest via siege units and support. These stacks are fairly self-sustaining, thanks to the high city attack strength of Trebs and the power of collateral. During the final ten-twelve turns, we switched to building Horse Archers, since these were the only units quick enough to reach the front line.

This allots ~50 turns to Treb production, and ~10 turns turns to Horse Archer rushing.

With 8 cities on T100, it is possible to whip 8 units every other turn. With ~28 active cities on T150, it is possible to whip 28 units every other turn.

However, on T100 other builds have to be considered. While you *could* whip 14 units from ~14 cities every other turn on T120, the reality is that Granaries, Barracks, Rathauses (etc.) are needed to sustain this.

In the last ten turns, the empire is now filled with ~28 cities (up from 8) that are out of revolt. By this time, there is no good reason to whip a Barracks or a Granary or a RH. Similarly, there is no good reason to hold back from cold whips, or whipping away (e.g.) a Spice or a Pig tile. It is simply more important to squeeze out every unit you can that could possibly reach the front line.

Our 1-movement stacks wiped the globe. HArchers only rushed two cities in total (one in Japan, one in Russia) and provided support in England.

tl dr?

Spoiler :
T100: fewer cities can be whipped; city buildings are needed; good tiles must continue to be worked.

T150: lots of cities can be whipped; no city buildings are needed; 2-movement troop production is prioritized at all costs.

(Xpost with bestsss.)

Thanks for a fun game, kcd_swede and AlanH! We can't thank you enough for all of the hard work and effort that goes on behind the scenes to support such a competition!

Great job in bringing it home, LowtherCastle and Mitchum! :goodjob:

I think that the entire team can give special recognition to Jastrow for his strong commitment to the team. As has been said many times before, it's not how good your players are but how willing you are to commit your time and energy toward the team's success. When participation was lagging, Jastrow stayed strong and resolute, keeping the ideas flowing and challenging the ideas of others so that we could come up with a stronger plan. It is very fair to say that without his efforts, our game would have stalled and we would never have even finished the game, let alone made it to the podium.

I hereby recognize Jastrow with our team's Most Valuable Player Award for SGOTM 17. :trophy2:

Please join me in congratulating him, as I think that the entire team can stand with me in believing that Jastrow deserves this special recognition! :band:

While Jastrow and I stood on opposite sides of a debate more times than I would care to go back and count, that fact is perfectly acceptable and is actively encouraged, as it is through approaching a problem from different perspectives, with different guiding-experiences and different knowledge-backgrounds that allows a team to truly excel.

I do thank the entire team for all of the contributions made. Each and every one of your contributions has been read, analysed, and carefully considered by minimally me, as well as by other teammates. Those ideas which were not used were still instrumental in getting us to think more critically about each problem that arose and ensured that we got on track and stayed on track.

The testing which was done was also invaluable, as was any distribution of knowledge either from lines of code or from other sources, such as a player's memory.

I would also like to thank each and every one of our fellow teams in this competition. No matter where you ranked in the standings, your games will provide me and many others with valuable comparison data and most certainly helped to make this competition worth playing! Thank you very much and your hard work and efforts are also highly recognised! This game was not a trivial challenge and I will honestly say that I am very proud of you all for your efforts in completing this challenge and for playing a fair and clean game!

Hi Folket! Welcome to our thread! Let me ask you three simple questions.

1. How many kinds of workers are there CIV? (Compare to real life.)
2. How many kinds of settlers are there in CIV? (Compare to real life.)
3. How many kinds of war units are there in CIV? (Compare to real life.)

Let me ask you three simple questions.

2. How many kinds of settlers are there in Karl XIIs likfärd?
3. How many kinds of warriors are there in Karl XIIs likfärd?

I still do not think the picture depicts war. And I also do not think that making all soldier identical would change that.

Look at the war game Verlorene Siege. We can see that things can be wargames without that much detail.

Moderator Action: This is a pointless discussion. Please let it rest.

Anyone who wishes to discuss my statement that CIV is a war game, feel to send me a private mail. The last thing I care to do is cause undue stress for moderators.

Who's planning to play the next game? Most of our team has been missing for the last three to four months, so we may have a lot of recruiting to do...

@ Jastrow

Excellent. I was hoping you'd return. Since you're a lover, not a fighter, your words of caution will be noted... and then ignored. ;)

Me? I'm useful for one month and useless the rest of the time.

Is this a hoax? Of course you're welcome to join our team! We could use another war monger and a code diver since ZPV went missing in action early on last game. Just be warned that LC eats turds like us for breakfast. That's right, LC eats turds for breakfast. If it gets to be too much, you can always voluntarily walk the plank, of course. :p

Oh yeah, I should mention that you must have thick skin to be on this team since insults fly freely... usually directed at or from me.

I think you're totally useful all the time. In particular, you envigorate people and your spirit lives on even when you're elsewhere.

If you're totally certain that Kakumeika doesn't need 10-15 players, then they probably won't miss you. :) We appear to have about four players right now, at best, so we definitely need more players. We may not be the strongest team in the world, but we're really good on synergy, if that interests you.

I don't know what Mitchum is talking about. I'm vegan.

Not anymore a hoax. It was definitely one when it came to join the deity players shrine, but I was really pondering for a time about here. I rather like the cordial atmosphere. And anyways, I was a turd useless in Kaku since SGOTM14. I can't keep up with people 100% of the time there. From computers and phones. :faint:

Anyways, I know I won't be missed by 75% of people there. :)

Take care of me then. :nuke: If I can succeed to keep active....

The way I see it, if you're having fun it's much easier to stay active and involved. Welcome aboard. :wavey:

Plus, if you play your cards right, maybe this will be another team that will be happy to see you leave... :D

Just a small question: is it a leaderless team? It seems so...

Plus, if you play your cards right, maybe this will be another team that will be happy to see you leave...

Lol, uh, in fact, I'm not sure. :D

En les seizième et dix-septième jeux de la succession, j'ai pris le rôle du commandant de l'équipe. Mais, en effet, j'étais moins un dirigeant and plus un guide.

Soyez le bienvenu a notre équipe!

Spoiler Translation :
Assuming that my out-of-practice French still has a few shining points, I just said:
In SGOTM 16 and 17, I took on the role of the team leader.

However, I was less of a director and more of a guide.

Welcome to our team!

Oh no, they now have the bloodthirsty Tachy on board!
