SGOTM 18 Pregame Discussion Thread - Austin Powers

You admit it's off topic, and yet you STILL post it! PLEASE!!!!

It would be best if Tall German Joe answered this himself, but it seems likely that his friends are registered on another Civilization web site, perhaps one in their native language.

EDIT: A recent comment on the TSR SGOTM-17 thread suggests that Tall German Joe's team are actually members of another Civilization web site. It did not confirm the "native language" part of my assumption though.

I rather doubt his team is composed solely of his RL friends, though that is certainly possible too.

Sorry about clogging up the sign up thread by continuing this diversion from its sole purpose.

Tall German Joe is my adoptive father, and has been carefully raising me to follow in his footsteps as a Civilization 4 expert. This month is my trial of manhood. If I pass, I shall be allowed to attend school with all the other children. If I dishonor the team I shall be put in the cedar chest for another week.

... and now for the next tempest in the teapot:
Spoiler :
"New Random Seed on Reload" will be active as it was in sgotm17, because it makes life a little more comfortable for game admin and players didn't even notice a difference. Please try to play the later game on stable computers because multiple crashes in a short period could look more suspicious than usual if important RNG things are going on. <will add this to game description>

I know I had alot of crashes in the last few turns of the game. It certainly wasn't due to my computer lacking power/stability. Perhaps having a quad core computer and civ just running on one?? Saying that we did have rather alot of units as well

I met Tall German Joe at a CivCon while on holiday in Siberia a few years ago and we really hit it off. We're now good friends and stay in touch with the odd Civ4 game here and there while we talk about girls. Very excited to play on his team for this Succession Game Of The Month. For The Horde!

I was trapped with Tall German Joe in a collapsed mine shaft for one week and we passed the time by talking about Civ 4 strategies and going over past games. I went in there a Noble player and emerged seven days later an Emperor. Civ 4 is amazing!

TGJ's multipersonal identity seems well revealed by his own oververbosity.

To keep on-topic, I'd ask the Swede: is there anything in SGOTM rules that prohibits one-person teams' participation?

Although, frankly, I'd be quite interest in the outcome of collective vs individual decision-making....:mischief:

Ask AlanH about the rules for that... but IMO the whole idea of a succession game is that you hand off the game to another player. I don't think a single person could perform as well as even the least effective team, but to prove that I will be playing this one myself in shadow. Of course, I have the advantages of map pre-knowledge and the possibility to listen in to all the strategy discussions. But as a player I am at best mediocre, so its a fair game. So you will get to see the difference between team and individual play, without even having tro exert yourself. Join a team, play as a team, and have more fun. Beating all the teams as an individual will be quite boring.;)

Spoiler :
As a last resort, I also have worldbuilder possibilities. As Mel Brooks might say... its good to be the king.:king:

I wll of course award myself the Platinum Laurels no matter what hapens, but teams are certainly welcome and encouraged to play for gold.

I don't like teams to start with fewer than six players we have the GOTM series if you want to compete as an individual. SGOTM is a team sport, so we certainly don't allow single players to start the game. It has been known for a single player to finish a game because all the other team members deserted, but even that is not a welcome outcome.

I agree with what you said and i too suspect TGJ's team to be a multi identity.

But, what i really care is about FE. We're only 5 unless you can add some unallocated player. I'm quite sure we can be all active - inshallah - but we can't know what RL can reserve to us.

You have no reason to suspect that Team badciv is anything other than what it claims to be. Cease the speculation.

There is currently one unallocated player. It may well make sense to bring Fifth Element up to six players.

The accusation that anyone is fielding a phatom team and really playing SGOTM solo is at first glance preposterious. Why would anyone, other than the scenario designer and aides, even want to do that?

If there is any truth to this at all, it should be handled privately and not in a public venue such as this thread.

Arguing about rules violations in the abstract is quite tame compared to accusing actual players of specific rules violations in public. I see nothing wrong with the former, but I find the latter quite distasteful and ungentlemen-like.

I strongly suggest that all accusations of (unsubstantiated or substantiated via undenible proof) rules violations be discussed with SGOTM staff via private communication channels. Public commnication channels are never the right place to initiate such accusations/investigations.

My apologies to anyone wrongly (or rightly) accused in such a manner. Trial by public opinion is something we should all try to avoid.

EDIT: Sorry, crosspost with AlanH's last post which concisely describes the correct action to take here.

If so, it was a very badly expressed joke, and in very poor taste. Multiple logins are a violation of forum rules.

Aha, now we know why you created objective #5. Play on.

I resurrected this old account I used to lurk here with just because I could not believe some of the lunatic slurs being levelled at Tall German Joe and the rest of the BadCiv players in this thread. I am from the same Civ community they are from and before posting there I used to play with the Realms Beyond guys -- you can still find some of my old Angband character dumps on their web site in fact. I mention this only to try and pre-empt some of the paranoid accusations that will invariably be levelled at me now.

Let me assure you that these new posters are not one and the same person. They actually asked me if I wanted to play with them in this game, but I refused, because this community is notorious for being parochial and unwelcoming to new people. Did you ever stop and think that maybe the reason why you don't see many new teams being created is because of the very attitudes being displayed in this thread? I know it certainly scared me away. Why bother committing the amount of time and energy that a SGOTM requires if this is the sort of reception you're going to get? Unbelievable.

Perhaps some people in this thread might want to consider if they should spend a little more time actually, you know, playing Civ and a little less time chasing phantoms in the shadows. It would be best for everyone concerned.

Thanks.

This subject is closed. If anyone wishes to discuss it further, then you should PM me.

Sorry, AlanH :mischief:

If you read this article carefully you will notice that it all started off with a (slightly off) joke which was then mistakenly interpreted as an accusation on Tall German Joe, an Internet forum not being the best medium to convey humour in general. I'm pretty sure no one intended to attack Tall German Joe or make the BadCiv team feel unwelcome.

Btw, I'm fairly new to CFC myself and never felt the global enmity you're describing. Sure, all forum members are different and you may not like some of them, but the community as a whole is fantastic IMO. A little less prejudice never hurts :)

In any case, welcome back :)

Any ideas when the threads will open? Do i have time to install windows afresh?

There's always time to reinstall Windows in my experience. :-)

I expect to post the threads after I've dined this evening. So in a couple of hours. I can hold off on yours if you wish.
