SGOTM6 - Xteam

One thing that is good about ICS is that all the towns adds a lot to your powerrating, so you can easilly get a lot in peace deals :p
If I didnt want those 2 techs in the peace deal with china, I could have gotten all their towns (except the capital ofcourse)

@Mistfit - You forgot the supercharger sticking out of the hood and the gun turret on top, a perfect gift for the warmonger of the family!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

@Alan - That F4 composite is cool. :cool: Talk about entangling alliances. Looks like we might be able to play off this a little bit as the only civ aligned with the Mongols is Japan. Should they declare, they are already at war with plenty of other civs as well. I wonder if we could drag Babylon along with us against Japan, should Japan declare. :mischief:

Good luck, both with the new wheels and the Mongols!! :thumbsup: :hammer:

Summary
Quite a mix of MM, building, trading, and trying to fight a war that I hadn't really prepared properly for.

- We have 53 cities plus a settler in place, including a couple of towns we've taken away from the Mongols, and we have 11% of the territory.
- We know how to make Gunpowder but we have no saltpeter yet.
- Japan is at war with almost everyone.
- We are at war with the Mongols.

Turn 140 50 AD Preflight
F1: MM various towns. Starve Tsingtao (resisting)
F4: Our WM is out of date by about 30 gold. Trade round make 79 gold. Trade dyes and spices to France for 24gpt.
We have 141 gold + 153gpt. We could research Gunpowder in 9 turns, but it's probably cheaper to save up and buy it.
F3: We are rated average or strong against all civs. There are barbs reported near Chinan - probably on the islands in the fog.

IBT Carthage settler seen heading north for spaces. England declares on Japan. Jananese galley heads west on our north coast.
Beijing, Kiafeng temple->settler. Xinjian, Monguntiacum worker->settler. Camulodonum, Eboracum knight->knight

Turn 141 70 AD Move Euroswords south, knight west, workers to work.

IBT Babylon declares on Japan. We have a major dogpile on Japan! Japansese galley turns back east.
Shanghai riots as it grew last turn and is suffering from whip unhappiness. Mohacs knight->knight. Chinan worker->temple, Axima warrior->temple

Turn 142 90 AD 454 gold + 164gpt

IBT Tsingtao resistance ends. Tsingtao worker->barracks. Richborough, Curovernum settler->settler. Augustodorum knight->knight. Chengdu worker->barracks. ningpo worker->worker.
Paris completes Leonardo's, starts JS Bach.

Turn 143 110 AD Our borders have now enclosed the furs. Cut lux tax to zero.
France has Music Theory, of course. So does everyone else except Japan, who's at war with them all. We have a 2-fer opportunity. Buy Music Theory from Vikings for 513+WM. Buy Gunpowder from Japan for Music+WM+33gpt+7. Back to Vikings and sell Gunpowder for WM+513 gold. We have no saltpeter. France has one spare, would charge 20gpt+cash for it. Japan has 2 saltpeter, only one source hooked up near Kyoto. India has it connected at Lahore, but it's not linked to Delhi yet. Can't see any in Mongolia, but there's plenty in the northern hemisphere.
Sell WM around for a few shekels. France is ahead Banking. We are ahead of Babylon and Mongols by Music and Gunpowder, and China by Gunpowder.
Our euroswords seem to have reached the Mongolian border. Might as well keep going :mischief: Declare war.
@Ulaanbaatar, grass, pop 5: Vet sword kills 4/5 Khorchin, promotes 5/5. Vet sword kills 3/3 spear, no damage. Vet sword kills 3/3 spear->2/4, takes town with 4 resisters.
Second stack advances on Hovd over mountain. Reg spear on top, hills pop 3.

Pop rush a couple of temples.

618 gold+143gpt. Slider 10.0.0. We could research Chemistry in 17 turns at 80%.

IBT No counters from Mongols, just a few worker and spear moves.
Lugdunum knight->knight. Tienstsin temple->barracks, Tatung temple->worker, Nemausus temple->worker, Glanum barracks->knight, Deva temple->barracks.
Japan, Carthage, Vikings, Americans building JS Bach

Turn 144 130 AD Build New Entremont in west->temple

@Hovd: vet sword kills 3/3 spear, no damage. Elite sword kills 3/3 spear no damage nad takes town, 2 resisters

Near Ulaanbaatar: elite sword kills 3/3 spear in forest. Stacks advance on Kazan and Mandalgovi.

Buy a worker+WM from America 27 gold+WM. Buy a worker+WM from Carthage for WM+26. Babs has Music.

716 gold+144gpt

IBT Beijing settler->settler. Hangchow temple->barracks, Verulamium knight->knight, Gergovia worker->worker, Isca worker->worker, Segusio worker->worker
Babs, England building Bach's. Salamanca completes Sistine Chapel. Everyone switches Sistine builds to Bach's.

Turn 145 150 AD
@Mandalgovi - tundra, pop 2: vet knight kills 3/3 spear->2/4

Outside Hovd: 5/5 sword retreats vs 3/3 spear on hill, no damage. 4/4 sword kills 3/3 spear->2/4.

@Kazan - hills, pop 6: There's a pike on top, so we'll cross the river and wait for a knight to arrive.

Build New Mohacs south of Chengdu

IBT Mongol LB kills 2/4 sword outside Hovd.
Vikings declare on Japan.
Shanghai temple->barracks, Canton temple->barracks, Nanking settler->settler, Tsingtao barracks->knight, Agedincum knight->knight, Lapurdum settler->barracks, Lindum worker->worker, Gevum temple->barracks, Lezoux worker->temple.
Carthage gets lucky and completed Bach's in hte cascade from Sistine. Audible sound of shields down drains all over the map.

Turn 146 170 AD
Outside Hovd: 4/4 sword dies vs 4/4 LB on hill. LB redlined, promotes to 2/5. 4/4 sword kills him->2/4

Move Nanking to radius 5.

Buy WM+worker from America for 31+WM. Resell WM.

1001 gold+143gpt

IBT Mongol counters - we lose two swords and a knight to Khorchins and a LB.
Noviomagus worker->temple

Turn 147 190 AD
Build New Lugdunum at radius 5 from Beijing

@Mandalgovi: 4/4 sword dies vs 3/3 spear 4/4 sword kills spear->2/4, takes town. One taxman.

Outside Kazan: 4/4 sword kills 2/4 khorchin->3/4,
@Kazan: Stack attacks - kills one pike, redlines second pike, we lose two swords.

IBT Japan and India sign peace.
Remaining 3 swords at Kazan are killed by Mongol Khorchins, LB nad even a couple of warriors :(
Entremont barracks->knight, Camulodunum riots :hmm:

Turn 148 210 AD
Regroup. France now has no spare saltpeter, so she's traded it to someone. Japan has spare, available for 1000 gold.
Mongols willtalk. They would give three fringe towns - Tsetserleg+Edenet+Chobalsan for peace.

IBT Khorchin attacks knight, redlines him, but dies.
Beijing settler->granary, Richborough settler->knight

Turn 149 230 AD
Outside Darhan: sword retreats from LB->2/4. Knight kills 2/4 LB->2/4 :eek:
In Mongol mountains knight kills warrior->1/4

Build New Camulodonum

India and Japan have Banking now, so it's for sale at a price.
Trade maps around for some cash, and leave Banking ot the next better player.
America has Ivory for sale as well.

IBT Mongols kill a knight and a sword near Darhan.
Camulodunum, Ratae Coritanorum, Tolosa knight->knight.
Palace gets four vertical symbols of Brennus' masculinity.

Turn 150 250 AD
Kill a LB and a Khorchin. Retreat redlined knight in mountains.
Build New Richborough

After action report
There's a settler on a radius 5.x spot north east of Beijing, ready to settle there next turn. That completes the 5 ring for Beijing, having moved Nanking.

The war against the Mongols is in that stage where they've counter-attacked and we've lost several units. We're waiting for reinforcements, and hoping that the Mongols don't come up with too many more offensive units. I should probably have waited for the knights to get there before engaging them with the swords, but the Khorchin are doing a lot of damage to our knights as well. The hill towns defended with pikes could be taken with swords, but knights will be more efficient. It's probably better to use the swords as second string now, mopping up strays, and build up an attack with knights.

I don't know what stage of Golden Age they are in, if any. They've been at war with other civs before we declared, but I don't know if their UUs saw any action. They would give us three dead end towns for peace now, and we haven't really started to hurt them yet.

Banking is out there in three civs. I don't see it as important yet. We need Chemistry/Metallurgy/Mil Tradition, but the AI were fiddling with Music and now, probably, Democracy, Economics and Artistic Impression.

We have 130+ gpt, and 1500 gold in the bank. We have four luxuries, and we need some markets in our core cities to maximise cash.

MM is getting tedious, and complex with our tight build round the FP. I added one town near Ratae, and there's room for two or three more in the south. Several new towns filled in between the two cores, among the mountains, and there are several spots near to the Mongolian lands to be settled once we secure the area.

Have fun Tomoyo.

Got it. I'll play tomorrow, since I don't feel like MMing now, since I want to sleep...

I'll catch up on some reading and discussion that I've slacked on.

Nice Work, Alan! :goodjob:

Sounds like we should be prepared to, hopefully, fill in a little bit of Japanese space should their war with everyone go bad. Perhaps we should build a galley and have it ready on the east coast should any opportunities present themselves. :mischief:

Get a good night's sleep Tomoyo, sounds like some heavy MM. :eek: Maybe I'd better get some sleep myself!! :eek: :eek: ;)

I forgot to mention it, but I saw a mongol UU kill a chinese warrior next to our territory 1 or 2 turns before the palace jump

I must have entered the wrong thread. If this is the "Pimp my Ride" thread, where's sgotm6? :D

Btw: nice wheels, Alan. Luxury cars are a bit overpriced in Norway so it'll be a while before I find myself in one of those [pimp]

Of course! He was still around when I picked it up, a 2/5 Khorchin, I seem to recall. That means their GA will last a maximum of another 8 turns, could be less.

Nicely done Alan.

I must have gotten the cheaper PC version of that new CivIII Paint program, but it gets the point across.

How effective has the dogpile been......
Xteam06_08.jpg

Japan has lost a total of 1 tile (not city) since 150BC.

Japan stats from Mapstats
17 cities 316 tiles 150BC
17 cities 316 tiles 50AD
17 cities 315 tiles 250AD

But my real reason for the post is that I agree with leif and we should be ready to move on Japan while the dogpile is still in effect. They have 2 sources of saltpeter and a third just into India territory. We don't need to attack Japan until we have finished up with the Monogols but as we wrap up the Mongols we should start preparing for Japan. This should allow us to gain control of the salts prior to us gaining MT and cavs.

EDIT: And the one JPN city that we can see into is defended by a spear not musket. I'm thinking that Japan has positioned its better defenders to their eastern side and have currently left their backside exposed. If we could start taking cities from them with the dogpile in effect the other AIs might get active in the war also.

Nice F4 job, Gator. Mine just benefited from the 'Clone Stamp' tool in Photoshop, which I've recently discovered and is a magical way to manipulate pictures.

Yes, it often seems that the AI can be at war forever and never actually achieve anything. And in this case the Japanese only have two neighbours - Iroquois an India. The rest are probably too far away to bother, India has now made peace, so it's only Iroquois who could be for real. That should pull all Japan's samurai over to the east, where I'd have thought they would be able to make mincemeat out of Hiawatha, but apparently not ... yet? Perhaps they are dispersed as a result of the multiple perceived threats, in which case they'd be an easy target.

One option is to use the same dastardly trick we pulled on Persia in Gator01. As soon as we get Mil Tradition, sign up a RoP and saltpeter deal with Japan, upgrade a stack of knights to cavalry, boat them over and billet them next to some key Japanese cities, then declare and take out their western region.

The challenge here would be a little different. We would want to hold the captured territory, not just make a hit and run raid on the Great Library. And we'd need to build enough knights for upgrade so that we could survive with no more cavalry builds until we can get the saltpeter hooked up through a harbour or through India.

Unfortunately, I can not play until Thursday at the earliest. I would hate to screw up because I tried to rush through to keep it moving. Perhaps it is best to request a skip or trade turns with someone. So, if you've returned all tanned and relaxed WillowBrook, please go ahead. Or Gator, if you have the time right now.

Sorry, its killin' me. :cry:

Good work Tomoyo. Lugdomum is ours really, the Japanese are just borrowing it, along with our saltpeter, Kyoto, and several other cities their side of the water :D

leif is out until Thurday and Willowbrook said she's not back until Friday 4th. So to keep the game in play the lights flash, the wheel of fortune spins, and the pointy bit lurches to a juddering halt over Gator's name, with Gyathaar lurking in the wings.

Gyathaar - On deck

Tomoyo - just played

Aaaarrrgh! Traded in my old jalopy for my beautiful new wheels to day. But the venerable old lady had the last laugh. She stalled crossing a major road. I jumped out and tried to push her out of the traffic flow and trashed my right achilles tendon. I have an exquisite new car, and the foot I usually use for the loud pedal is in plaster for at least two months :cry:

I think I could be thrown into a jail cell with no key if I had an accident while driving cross-legged :eek:

Sorry to hear about the pedal problem. That just means you'll be parked in front of the Mac instead of the Jag.

I guess this is a got it. With 2 skips that came back fast. I just finished my Gator01 set, so I should be be able to play tomorrow or Wednesday.

See that JPN has musket in the flipped city

found Leif's Hideaway with a nice view of ocean and mountain view
sorry Alan :sad: your settler is on a caravel crossing over to Gator's Point

Notes to next player
1) we are currently not at war with anyone
2) I've stationed all the MON assault troops near the CART border and have started to amass troops for a JPN invasion
3) look at my builds, I only have a few settlers in production we may want to change that - I stayed with the knight build because we are close to MT and cavs and I wanted to have a large number of them on hand. I also have started some LBs strictly for MP duty.
4) Most 1spt cities are either building temples or workers if they already have a temple, a few are building harbors for food first
5) Should probably be a peaceful turnset as we continue to gear up to assault either Japan or India
6) we could cut the research time from 12 turn to 10 turns if we run a slight negative (-6gpt), our treasury is at 1485 and we only have 23 knights currently
