Should Citizens Have to Pass a Basic Citizenship Test?

Well look at the facts. We invaded Mexico and took a crapload of their land in the 1840s. The Mexicans living here just didn't up and leave once it was all said and done. In the 1860s we reaffirmed through the 14th constitutional amendment birthright citizenship knowing full well all these Mexicans were inside our territory.

Thats not the case today, and simply not what we are talking about.

Well you might as well have a reality check. The federal government doesn't really give a hoot about illegal immigration.

The people of the United States however, do.

Every so often they get all hot and bothered about it at a congressional session, but in the end nothing ever happens. If the federal government cared(which they don't) they would deport the mother and give her a choice to take the baby with her(which she'd probably do) or keep it here in foster care. This would eliminate the incentive for women to come here and pop out children.

I agreee we need better emphasis on our immigration laws and less apathy in regards to them.

It's the only possible solution if you consider this a problem. The removal of birthright citizenship would take a constitutional amendment to pass whereas this would take a simple policy change.

A lot of americans do indeed regard illegal immigration as a problem.

That's a problem in itself.

Americans imagine illegal immigration to be far worse than it actually is. Every time there's gang graffiti or someone gets robbed in a Hispanic area, they scream it was illegals, when, actually, only 7% of the crime in this county was committed by illegals.

About half of the people I talk to about illegal immigration are racists. When someone says they are against illegal immigration and then use racial slurs like, "Beaners" or "Cockroaches", in the same sentence, it sure sounds like racism to me. It's almost as if the racists are using the Illegal Immigration laws as a shield to hide their racism.

What Americans(white) seem to fear most about illegal immigration, is the fact they will, one day, be a minority. They seem to fear a "Browning" of America.

7% of the crime? They are 4% of the population, so that doesn't look too good for them.

It's exactly what we're talking about people got birthright citizenship regardless of the fact that their parents weren't citizens. Throughout our history there's always been an immigrant group the people weren't terribly fond and despite this the rule never changed.

The people of the United States however, do.

well it's one thing to say you care, but it's another to actually care enough to do something about it.

I personally don't care, but for those that do there are plenty of options out there besides amending the constitution.

It should be 0%.

You might have a point if they are also indeed racist at legal citizens as well.

What Americans(white) seem to fear most about illegal immigration, is the fact they will, one day, be a minority. They seem to fear a "Browning" of America.

Nope. From what I see most of the issues are about money, jobs and crime.

It should be 0%.

Unless Angels are illegally immigrating, that might be possible.

Yup. Every Hispanic is a suspected illegal.

Nope. When I get some racist ****** yelling that this is his country and he built it up and he's not going to let a bunch of "B-words" turn it into a cesspit like Tiwana, I don't think it's about money or jobs.

Should Citizens Have to Pass a Basic Citizenship Test?

Yes. The test would be whether they have a pulse or not. Beyond that, responsibility goes to law enforcement to deal with any criminal problems.

But if you asked me on, say, Monday's or Thursday's, the answer would be that there needs to be some sort of basic local language knowledge, and no criminal record (at least for the previous few years). There wouldn't have to be a ridiculous test like what Australia had a few years ago. No questions such as 'What sport is Don Bradman famous for?'

Unless Angels are illegally immigrating, that might be possible.

Or, we could reduce the number of illegals to the point where its statistically insignificant.

Yup. Every Hispanic is a suspected illegal.

Nope.

They already tried this in the South to disenfranchise the black voters.

Good point. Testing the citizenry as a basis of citizenship just seems like an attempt to disenfranchise.

I'd take the immigration test as a kind of high-water market for acclimatization. I wouldn't take it as an IQ/worthiness test but as a mark of how serious the prospective citizen is about joining society.

EDIT: And if anyone is worried about 'dummies' having the right to vote, we already have the elector count system.
