Should fat people pay more for clothes?

No :p Obesity is worse than smoking, the government should fight it by all means necessary. Higher taxation (special taxes on fat food, soft drinks, sweets etc.), higher insurance, special price categories for fat people when justified (two-seat rule in planes, trains, buses, theatres...) and so forth. Their life must be made so miserable that it makes them to do something about their weight.

This solution does not take into consideration the fact that not all obesity is the result of voluntary lifestyle choices. Genetics, glandular disorders, physical disability etc all can cause obesity in perfectly healthy and productive citizens. It is unfair and mean-spirited to paint all large people with so broad a brush, and to discriminate against them, err, indiscriminately.

And why deny society our venerable fat men? Our Grants and Bismarks? Our Santa Claus and Chris Farleys, and Belushi's? I think that in our better moments, we can all make room for fat people every now and then :D

I was replying to Winner's suggestion that the government should mandate higher tax rates etc. for the obese. He said "their life must be made so miserable that...." etc etc. I disagree with that.

It is vaguely equivalent to taxing/penalizing white people because of the drain on the economy caused by their excessive need for sun lotion.

oh yeah, sorry.
another well thought-through idea by winner...

Maybe fat people shouldn't be paying more for clothes that don't require as much manufacturing but for bras, i think it's justified.

I think people under estimate how much work has to go into constructing a bra - its not just a t-shirt, or a blouse or even a suit jacket. Even a basic one needs actual construction to actually be of use as a bra. It's got to be attractive, functional and comfortable - people with larger breasts need better support and the straps would need to be more comfortable and distribute the weight well over the shoulder, etc... bras for people who are less blessed in the breasts don't need that complex construction so much. Maybe that effects the cost of production, even for the same design of bra?

The average bra size worn in the UK is a 36C, but Bravissimo, which specialises in bras, swimwear and clothing for bigger boobed women, estimates that the true average size is likely to be nearer a 34DD or E. Their research shows two thirds of women are wearing a bra that is both a back size too big and too small in the cup, and that 6 out of 10 women wearing an 'average' C cup should be at least a D cup.

I find that interesting though - if the average cup size is likely to be around the DD mark anyway, maybe the higher price needs to be set to start from a bigger size?

Absolutely NOT!!!

Precisely the kind of knee-jerk reaction the protesters were after...

In my defense, companies do not tax people, only governments do. Yes, I just quickly scanned the article...very quickly...but if you just hear the word tax, do you think of your government or do you think of the local hardware store?

They should discriminate in 3 categories:

1. Women with large breasts pay normal price.

2. Fat chicks with fat breasts pay more.

3. Fat men are rounded up and all their assets distributed among society, while they take a lifelong sabatical.
