Sieg Heil

PS: Allegiance should not be pledged to a piece of cloth which can be waved around by any jingoistic, wannabe tyrant but to the Constitution, to the Constitution, and above all, to the Constitution. :salute:
The US Constitution is in serious need of improvement though, so I really don't think that is much better...

He makes me ashamed of the entire species, not just of being American.
That's taking it a bit far, isn't it? I express my patriotism once a year, on Remembrance Day (possibly on a couple of days, if I remember to buy a poppy - that involves a small donation to the Royal Canadian Legion). It involves sitting quietly in my living room, watching the Remembrance Day ceremonies on Parliament Hill (can't physically get to the local ceremonies), and I don't do what I normally do when watching TV (which often involves playing a game on the computer or posting here).

Totally appropriate, and weird gesture-free.

They did the pledge allegiance rather half-heartedly most of the time I was in school. The only teacher I remember caring whether we stood or not was, ironically, a Jehovah's Witness who himself refused to stand for the pledge himself but insisted that any students who did not have a religious objective must do so.

Religion seems like a self serving exception to the rule... The girl in the OP story objected to the justice and liberty verse because we've failed to live up to that promise thereby making the vow a fraud. I personally object to the under God and indivisible claims, I believe in secession and I'm not so sure about God.

and thanks Arakhor for correcting the title

I express my patriotism 365 days a year by demanding the United States live up to its founding ideals by implementing socialism

Saying you're ashamed of the entire human race means you're ashamed of everyone here as well. I haven't done anything to merit you being ashamed of me.

That's the point; that's just how embarrassing he finds Donald Trump's comportment.

if Trump got Jodie Foster's role in Contact we'd be exterminated

How about Ed Harris's role in The Abyss? "Why are you sparing us?" The wall slowly spells out a standard Trump tweet, followed by "Good question." The end.

Can we start a thread for explaining everyday phrases to people who just don't seem to grasp the concept?
Go ahead. It won't show up for me on the main OT page, but whatever.

Are you sure you're familiar with that movie?

The only "extermination" that happened was when the religious nut committed a suicide bombing on the machine, and killed Tom Skerritt's character. Jodie Foster played a peaceful astronomer whose character was based on one of Carl Sagan's female colleagues.

Speaking of not getting it. Let me explain. The aliens, based on one sample of humanity, are pleased that humanity is taking its "first steps" towards joining universal society. If that sample had been Trump, they'd have annihilated us for sure, and rightfully so. Get it?

The Abyss is one of my favorite movies, especially the scene near the end when the alien ship appears. Kinda like the end of Grand Canyon when the friends look down at 3 billion years of Earth history and discover how insignificant we are.
