And I'm planning on throwing something together either tonight or tomorrow.

The following is a document retrieved from a monastery near the city of Enna, dated 780 CE. It was titled, "The Orthodox Edict of Palermo"

In the year of our lord 778, the Christian Orthodox faith of the east stood at a perilous time. The mad Emperor Constantine V of the Roman Empire has executed the Ecumenical Patriarch and begun an inquisition of all followers of Christ, instead embracing the old pagan gods and goddesses. The Pope has managed to persuade many to believe in him as the supreme authority of Christianity on this mortal world. Only our Kingdom of Sicily and the eastern Kingdom of Armenia stand by our old faith now.

King Nikolaos Valerius saw this decline in our faith, as did the remnants of the church here. They met in private to discuss the future of Orthodoxy in the city of Palermo, before eventually coming to a decision and announcing it publicly. This event is now called "The Orthodox Edict of Palermo".

The edict's first announcement was that all followers of the Patriarchy could seek refuge in Sicily, whether escaping persecution in the Roman Empire or seeking a new home from Venice and Savoy. This much, at least, was widely accepted, and was essentially only a formalization of our policy to other members of our faith.

The more controversial section was that the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople was lost. With the Romans having all but wiped out all Orthodox authority in Constantinople, a new Patriarchate would be required for the area once presided over. To that end, it was decided that it should be created here in Sicily, specifically in Palermo itself. As expected, this created much controversy. The Patriarchate of Constantinople was the most important Patriarchy, the higher amongst equals. To move it from its traditional seat to Sicily was almost unthinkable. But many more people recognized there was little option otherwise.

To alleviate some of these concerns, messages were sent to the other ancient Patriarchates of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem, as well as the Orthodox church of Armenia, to obtain their opinions. The response was...

Each Nation should have individual Patriarchs, with One Grand Patriarch stationed at the new equivalent of Hagia Sophia that is under construction at my capital. Besides, I have already selected a Patriarch, Moszes the Enlightened.

A Fierce Wind from the Eastern Wastelands

Spoiler :
917_large.jpg

The small little collection of Christian states in the East trembled. The Avar moved like locusts through the land. With a senseless blind furry they pillaged, but did not stay long. They took only what they could carry. The feeble lords of the East had little chance against the crazed men for the far flung waist lands. Stories and rumors were passed around the towns and cities like hot cider on a cold winters evening. The crazed barbarians ran from the Devil himself who commanded a grand host of demons.

The already wasted Easterners had little to defended against the coming of the Devils army. They were untouchable. On stout steeds rode men of the likes none have seen before. At full gallop even these savage men hit home with their arrows. The Europeans had nothing to stop them save from hiding in their already defeated forts with the few Avar who were not smart or swift enough to flee.

The Khan Kailias and his Captains scoffed at the forts, “Let the rabbits hide in their holes until they starve. We can take what we want while they hide.”

A man who was lucky enough to survive a horde onslaught had only this to tell those kings asking about the Tatars, "We heard of their approach by those feeling ahead of us. We knew not what to expect. It seemed like months went by in those few days we waited. Then we heard a soft unceasing roll of thunder in the distance. We had no idea what it could be. It grew louder yet we could see nothing and the road in the distance was clear. The peasants fled to the woods behind the keep. The king's men could not catch them, for they ran with the fear of death in their hearts. Then, from out of a small glen came thousands of men on horse back. How they came so near without being scene... it must have been sorcery. Then the whistle of arrows was faintly heard over the roar of hooves. We tried to raise our shields but the arrows were already upon us. I was lucky for I was not hit but many men on the wall fell around me. I began to pray to our Lord to save me. The barbarians moved like a school of fish in the stream, our archers could not seem to hit them. Soon they came with fire and the keep began to burn. The men who ran from the front gate were slaughter. I noticed the first had burned a passage out of the keep and I took it. My hands were badly damaged by the fire. I ran to the woods at an rabbits pace. Those who followed me I could hear being cut down by the vile beasts. Some how I was saved, but It will be some time until I stop moving west. Out of the reach of those.... beastmen."

If the Khan was particularly taken by a lord he would offer him this deal. “You may live in relative peace under my rule. Swear allegiance to me and my kin and we will allow you to rule over your and your neighbors lands. Offering only a tithe in food and supplies. You may even worship this Christ, though I do not understand why. It is clear that my horde is blessed by the ancient warriors of this land. Your Christ has abandoned you.”

Those who were not worthy of this offer, or refused it did not fair well.

A Medical Treaties Written During the Reign of Emir Izz-ud-Dim Ahmad of Barcelona

Though many Al-Andalusian Jews made their way to Cordoba during the late eighth century due to the Emirate's favorable laws, a small sect of Jews resided in Barcelona under the tolerant eyes of Emir Izz-ud-Dim Ahmad. It would seem that Izz-ud-Dim was somewhat more lenient in his treatment of heathens in his empire, and upon hearing of the Cordoban Emirate's progressive Jizya tax he would be quick to adopt them. However, the difference that lay between Cordoba and Barcelona was the treatment of the Jewish intellectuals within the realm: simply put Izz-ud-Dim embraced the entire spectrum of philosophy.

Perhaps it was the stories of the long-dead Rome, or Izz-ud-Dim's own strange upbringing, or the emir's general apathy towards overzealous displays of faith, he loved knowledge for knowledge's sake. The emir could more readily be found listening to some scholar than with his generals planning for war, and it seemed that insofar as Izz-ud-Dim was concerned Barcelona needed no more bloodshed. The relative peace that was enjoyed during Izz-ud-Dim was uncharacteristic of his era, but it was during this peace that multiple advances were made and the knowledge of antiquity was partially rediscovered.

Much to the chagrin of his more devout advisers Emir Izz-ud-Dim was very openhanded with his realm's gold, often elevating some philosopher he happened to favor that week into wealth and comfort at the Barcelonan court. Few dared speak out at the emir's charitably, though those who did were quickly rebuked by Izz-ud-Dim when he pointed out the stability his realm enjoyed due to his tendancy towards tolerance and peace. Many great warriors left the realm for the other Al-Andalusian courts, but in their place came scholars from all over the peninsula. Word spread quickly throughout the Mediterranean of Izz-ud-Dim's love of all things erudite and his realm fast became one of the primary centers of learning in the known world.

Oh no, the Emperor is dead! Now we will have to find a new one! But look! He has a son. Now he will be Emperor. It's the year 791... So... The Emperor had a long reign and he made Byzantium a pagan place again. The people love him for passing out the wealth the church extracted from them, but now he's dead. Hopefully his son doesn't suck hard.

His son was drunk though, and he said "Man I wish my daddy didn't die... Now I'm sad." and so he was.... Sad. But drunk still. HIs head was kindof spinning or something, and he wanted to drink more so he did. Then he said "BUrrrrrp".

So... he was the Emperor now, and he was sad about his daddy dieing, as I had previously stated. But now that he was dead, some people was like "Oh no, christianity is coming back!" but his son was like "NO WAY D00D!" he wasn't pagan or christian. He was atheist. He was Isaak. Isaak said "I don't understand why people trade one hocus pocus for another. Maybe I should slaughter all religions altogethers!?"

Then he rememebred he was drunk and said "No... I am not going to kill everyone that believes in nonsense". And henceforth noone was killed that believed in nonsense. Christians were able to be christians again, but tithes were still forbade. I love y00 all, thank you for listening to my story. I want to have babies with ur mom.

The Plans of a Nation
This story takes place near the end of King Ashot's rule, roughly 794 AD.
The King overlooked his kingdom. In the harbor, many workers were building ships for the wars that would most likely graze Armenia's future. He was old, and had seen much, but such a navy still gave him a feeling of great power. He turned on his castle's balcony (the castle situated at the top of a hill) and gazed at the construction of Asttso Tun, a grand cathedral to be the home of all East Roman Astvatsianism. For that is what the Armenians now called Orthodoxy. They had decided on a belief of unifying the Abrahamic religions, and decided to bring them under the general name of Astvats (God-Loving in Armenian), however, this was not the only endeavor the nation was currently undertaking. For there was diplomatic decisions Ashot had made. He had pledged allegiance to many states, but one of them would soon learn their faith was foolish, and that Armenia followed a different ally. But these were only the plans of now.
Ashot, elderly and wise, thought of his nation's future. He knew his son Hisun Ashotian, would continue to follow his father's example, and work towards plans they were not yet prepared for. The pacification of the Caucasus, and eventually, the Black Sea. The continued spread of the concept Astvatianism. Ashot smiled, taking in the fresh, cool, mountain air, thinking of such a great future. He closed his eyes, feeling the sensation. They never opened again.

King Ashot IV, the Pious
Born 736, Died 794
His Reign lasted from 775 until his Death
He will be remembered for his Faith, wisdom, and diplomatic endeavors.

CENTER]

And so the reign of Bernald Reginald III ended with the rebirth of Aquitaine. We have already seen how the the Visigoths of Aquitaine ruled over their small dukedom and their constant wars with the Franks, and their disasterous war with the Moors which forced Eudes the Great, once a serious contender for the Visigothic Throne of Iberia, to vassalize himself under Charles Marte. We then have seen the true union of Vascony and Aquitaine under Jacques II.

And now we come to the accomplishments of Bernald Reginald III himself, and how he earned his cognomen.

Born in 733, a year after the victory at Tours and the younger brother of Jacques who took the throne in 735, he was a passionate young man when he himself ascended the throne as Duke of Aquitaine in the Year of Our Lord, 751. He knows that the Moors are still gathering their forces, and that he himself must do the same as well.

To secure their rights to be independent of their overlords, he married Eleanor to his brash young counterpart, Charles the soon to be Great, and united the Visigothic and Frankish bloodlines in France.

To secure their rights as a nation, he cleverly lured and baited the heathens, converting them one by one, saving them without bloodshed while maintaining their trust in his government against the greater evil of the Moors.

To secure their frontiers, he has rebuilt the Limes Pyrenee constructed by the old Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo, this time, facing as a shied against Iberia.

To secure their future, he conquered a Mediterranean Port and used diplomacy to establish peaceable neighbors, even among else-while rivals, heretics, or Mahometans.

And all this he achieved in a long prosperous reign. Farms are rebuilt, walls are constructed, and men united behind the throne.

The King is Dead, Long Live the King.

RIP
Bernald Reginald III, the Architect, Duke of Aquitaine
733-796
r.751-
63 years of Age and 45 years of Reign

Long Live Duke Eudes II!

Byzantium

The Emperor Isaak was strolling through his garden when he was approached by a christian man. "My Emperor, I am greatful for your mercy. I was soon to be crucified when your edict that I be allowed to worship as I choose was announced." he said, and then he introduced himself "I am William the Carpenter, the Baron of Melun, of Frankish lineage. They call me 'The Carpenter' because of the way I cut through my enemies as a carpenter cuts through wood."

Impressed by this story, he wanted to see for his own eyes, so he called in one of his guard for this man to fight against and in a matter of seconds the guardsman was put down, his throat opened deep, blood pouring into the cobblestone of the garden path.

"Baron William, you are a long way from home" said Isaak

"I wanted to see for myself the attrocities that have been going on. The Pope has called a crusade, for things I considered impossible to believe. I see that they were true, but you have put an end to these things. I owe you my life for saving me from the crucifiction" said the Baron

"Then meet my enemies on the battlefield, and make them see that their crusade is folly... For I care not for what god my people pray to. Be it pagan, christian, or muslim." The Emperor said, and the baron swore his fealty there, was given an estate in western greece, men at arms, and command of a battalion of soldiers from which he was to prove his valiance. And prove it he did...
