1) I have thought really hard about it. What is the purpose of the Pope, or the Patriarch, or any religious leadership at all when, afterall, don't we have the scripture before us?
It is because that they serve to centralize a religion, so that there is only one interpretation at a time. It is because that there will be no Catholicism without the Pope, nor Orthodoxy without the Patriarch. It is because that having one vision, inspired by the Lord, is better than individual visions which might even have spawned from Satan.
2) It is simple proof, then, of his pragmatic sense. Since when did he legitimize their religion? He called them "Heathens". On the other hand, the Pope's mere existence led the Sultanate of Castile recognize OUR religion. He never offered any friendship, only an alliance of "necessity", like the same by grandfather Odo offered Charles Martel at that fateful battlefield, at 732.
3) The LORD will send aid in many forms. HE might send a disease that destroys the siege, but also the wicked within the castle. HE might inspire a pagan tribe to fight another. Whoever the Pope seeks aid from, I trust that the LORD inspired him to do so. The LORD has seen that my land was wicked, and sent the Mohametan to destroy it, and whence he saw that it was cleansed, he saved the survivors, all pure of heart, the man of Charles Martel, who saved them, and so the pure returned to their homes and rebuilt and better society. After all the pope was a mischievous little boy before he was a man of the cloth, and he was eventually a scheming politician cardinal before he was the pope. I propose that your religion has been hijacked by a man who hasn't got the whole of christendom at the heart of his interests. His recent territorial gains and his demands for your money would be proof enough, but now he demands your soldiers, too. You're the king of your own kingdom. Tell the Pope to pester his own nobles for these tributes, and leave yours alone... Or continue to be exploited for the profit of a greedy old schemer. If you're not willing to be your own overlord, then you shouldn't send any more diplomacy. You should just govern Aquitaine in the Pope's name and let him do the big boy talking for you.

Also, I'm putting this out there; world history outside the map area goes more or less the same as real life, barring major changes that would make such history illogical. China will still be ruled by the Tang, then Song dynasties, the Mayans will still rise and fall, etc. However, if Islam is contained in Persia or prevented from spreading into India and Asia somehow, then Indonesia will not become Muslim.
