So I hear some of you guys like the pacifism civic?

I rarely use pacificism myself, the upkeep even temporarlily seams to screw me up. When I do use it

1) Isolated starts where I need minimal troops for defense.
2) Spiritual where I can push towards a GP faster and be able to switch back.
3) Phil leaders since this magnifies there trait, getting more GP even faster, especially when racing to education ASAP (and cheap universities).

I have not quite figured out how the costs go, but usually they ar emore expensive. I wish someone would clearly be able to state what costs are for troops, what are free, and if vassalage negates some of the costs.

Oh yes and
4) If I have the Cristo redentor.

Pacifism doubles great person rate. It's occasionally useful. A liberalism slingshot through Philosophy (in Warlords) opens this civic up real early and you can use it to speed up liberalism (spiritual civ makes it easy). This means that you probably won't spend much time in Pacifism.

You would use this to speed up a Great Person. Sometimes it's worth it.

One should not forget that pacifism civic has no upkeep cost. Compared to the medium upkeep cost theocracy or high upkeep OR, there is quite a difference, especially for bigger empires.

o.O ?

Vassalage saves money on unit support, that's a fact. But it does not synergize with Pacifism at all.
Pacifism increases your military costs, regardless of the other civics.
Vassalage reduces your military costs, regardless of the other civics.

So, yeah, Vassalage can help you compensate for Pacifism's increase in upkeep, but it doesn't have any particular synergy, since Vassalage doesn't do more for Pacifism than it does for other civics.

That is true. I'm just throwing out an idea that I didn't realise myself until then. If you take a look at the context of the situation, I was in need of more troops but at the same time I needed GPs. Also, I wasn't Spiritual so it's better to change 2 civics at once to minimise anarchy. The upkeep savings was just a nice bonus. Vassalage happens to take a bit of the pain out of Pacifism.

Agreed 100%, it can help cushion the blw from Pacifism, if it costs too much. I just wanted to clearly point out there was no "synergy" between the two.
Oh and aelf, thanks for the ALC series ;)

EDIT: dammit, i meant the EMC =P Those two series have been a huge help and very interesting to read...

No problem. Sisiutil owes his freedom to my generosity ;)

I use pacifism pretty much after 1500 AD and for the rest of the game. It is my favorite civic b/c i love getting Great people. At that point I usually go representation, Free Speech, Mercantilism, Caste and Pacisifism. I rush to tanks and then build up my miltary hard core. By 1500 I'm usually the only one on my contenant or everyone else is a vassel so I only have to wait until I want to go to war with the other contenant. Plus if you have a religion or two and a city running only merchants the cost aren't that bad at all.

Don't forget that it can be great for quick cultural victories where you don't have a very large military (one warrior per city comes to mind).
