So what's the deal with expansion?

It feels so awkward. Expand too fast and you will start to lose money. Expand too slow and you will start to get behind. How fast should you expand then? It feels awkward because in CivIII the whole goal in the early game was basically to build as many cities as you can as fast as you can.

I would say that the goal is still to build as many cities as fast as you can. It's just that you need to use different tools to support that expansion (see the recent "money" thread).

I have found that a good way to help you expand faster is put your first worker (once you finish worker chop, if you do that), once you finish your second city, automated on "Create Trade Network" so that you can start getting more money every turn and help to keep your treasury alive.

You mean build roads? Roads don't give gold like they used to.

No, but connecting your cities by road gives trade routes that give money. But to get an even better start, try having your first three cities all along the same river. Instant trade routes without needing roads!
