I often find curiousities in some of the mundanities of human behavior. I then wonder if these curiousities really mean anything or not.

So, I present the great socks and shoes question. I invite you to answer the poll and then opine on the meaning of the results. :)

The question is simple:

You have 2 socks and 2 shoes. Do you put on both socks, then both shoes? Or do you do, sock and shoe, sock and shoe? I'm not interested in if you do left or right first.

Both socks then both shoes

Both socks first since the time between puting on socks and shoes could be hours.

True, but if I just want to wear socks, then I don't even drag out the shoes.

Remember, in this hypothetical, you have the socks and shoes ready to go. Best to assume you're about to leave the house. :)

Puttting on one sock and then a shoe, would be a sign of insanity.

Or is it a preservation of motion? I find that one sock, one shoe takes less effort than the other.

More seriously, this is an unconscious behavior, in that, its something you'd never notice unless you think about it. Do people learn these things in infancy by mimicking their examples (parents, siblings)? I'd think so.

I'm the second option, it's a habit of mine. I only put on both socks first only when I'm not in the hurry to wear shoes.

Must be instinct. If a lion were to suddenly appear, you wouldnt want to hop away on one foot.

I put on both socks then both shoes. But taking them off is another story - I will usually take of a shoe and a sock, then the other shoe and sock. My dad does the same but sometimes gets distracted halfway through the operation and ends up sitting around with one shoe and sock on for a while.

I prefer socks then shoes. This very discussion took place in an episode of "All in the Family" from the 1970s.

Years ago, an “All in the Family” scene had Meathead and Archie arguing about how to put on foot covering. Archie insisted the proper way was to put on both socks and then both shoes. Meathead preferred to “take care of one foot” then move on to the other. Here’s an audio interview with Norman Lear and Rob Reiner talking about that scene: http://www.mortystv.com/media/a_sock_and_a_shoe_norman_rob.wma

First socks, then sandals...

... alright, I may be in my 30s, but I still have more taste than that.

both socks then shoes. anyone doing it the other way is just plain weird.

Sometimes two socks first, sometimes sock-shoe-sock-shoe.

Ok, thanks for listening.

Sandals? Why would you put on socks with sandals? Thats like wearing a speedo over your pants.
