In a few of my games, I've been able to build maces without having iron hooked up or traded for. Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a bug or something?

In one of my games, I built manhattan and had uranium but couldn't build nukes for a number of turns. Am I missing something here?

In one of my games I made a tragic mistake (I reloaded an autosave because I didn't realize this could happen): I captured a coastal city with one unit and moved my entire navy/army into the city. The AI took the city back with one unit and my entire navy/army was wiped out (around 40 tanks) Don't ever make this mistake!!

Wow, I thought units boarded on transports would fight as "land units" or at least fight with the 50% penalty...not just die.

As for maces, I thought you could make them with bronze too. Was I mistaken?

No idea about nukes...I've never built, fired, or been hit by one.

Maceman require copper or iron. Just the Samurai requires iron as far as I know.

For the nukes, did you have the prerequisite missile techs? (Rocketry)?

Wow, I can't believe you can build maces with copper. Is that new? I always thought they required iron

On the nukes, I probably didn't have rocketry! Thanks :)

As per Anion's reference guide... yup, copper or iron. Checked the Warlords patch, nothing was there modifying macemen. As well, I found a thread here dated Jan 2006 with a unit guide saying macemen required iron or copper.

So, my guess is that it has always been there :D

It's always been like that. And there have been complaints about samurai needing iron specifically and therefore being at a disadvantage compared to the normal unit they replace. It really is quite a bummer if you can't build your UU because you only have copper, but everyone else who only has it can build maces. :D

You probably never realized it because its a VERY rare game where you dont have/conquer some Iron somewhere by the time Macemen come along.

I once forgot you needed Machinery as well as CS for Maces, and thought I was going to do a mass-upgrade with a pile of cash I was saving for a stack of Swords poised on an enemy border, but couldnt upgrade them when I finished CS!! Bummer too, the Swords didnt cut it vs the Longbows my opponent seemed to spawn from nowhere the instant he got Feud while I was busy researching Machinery, heh.

I think it's a variety of factors:

1) I played mostly Tokugawa in vanilla

2) Since xbows needed it, I figured why not maces too, makes sense?

3) I rarely don't ever have iron by the time I have maces

4) I usually don't fight with maces, but bypass them for the renaissance

Strange how I continue to learn things about this game after years of playing it

1) Nukes require BOTH a Uranium resource, and the tech FUSSION, to build Nukes...oh yes...the Manhatten project as well....Duh..

2) Maces can use EITHER iron or copper, and as well, if a mines on a river and in your cultural boarders...its linked automatically, I think you need sailing as well.

3) X-bow's need iron, and Archery tech...

4) Don't trade away your ONLY Alluminium resource, because you WON'T be able to build STEALTH BOMBERS... ok ok I'd launched space ship by then..and was just messing about with my Defence pact buddies.

I'm sure there are many more..little "idea's" that we all have...

P.S. I agree about Rosevelt...I came flying back in my last game...industrious, and special resources=EASY space race victory..

I'm currently playing through a rather tough game with no iron (as Augustus...that was a bit of a wrench, I don't mind telling you) and it's been an education in which units you can or cannot build. The macemen loophole has been my only saving grace, as I can't build crossbows, frigates, knights, or pikemen.

Interestingly enough, I can still build privateers, so I've got a pretty good pirate fleet going on. My long-term strategy just crapped out when I realized that I need iron to build cannon as well. I know that the tech required is called "Steel," but a huge chunk of my historical knowledge is from the Age of Sail, when you only built naval guns out of iron if you absolutely could not afford bronze. I imagine field pieces can't afford the weight, but in the back of my mind I was assuming "cannon=bronze."

It's been an interesting game. I know a lot of players would reload if they rolled Rome with no iron, but I've had more fun with it than most of my recent games.

that's funny what you say about macemen because when I read that I immediately thought - hey, of course you don't need iron! I guess it reflects gameplay style sometimes what some of us take for granted and others don't pay attention to. For me, getting to civil service is important not just for Beauracracy, but for those macemen, which are great city attackers and the first powerful unit that don't require iron (at least, you most likely will have either copper or iron by that time, so in my mind it's a unit that you don't have to worry about a certain resource). I thought it was always this way because it's a strategy I rely on so heavily sometimes.

I hadn't known that Maces could be built with copper either, until one game when I was considering a war with Saladin. I had no iron, so I decided I would wait until gunpowder units since I didn't have the capability to build maces. Then I saw the option to build them in one of my cities. I was shocked, so I checked the 'pedia and confirmed that they could be built with copper!

sweet Clide, laugh derisively at him.

seriously though, that is a pretty funny mistake to make, but it happens :)
