Should games have split-screen?

What do you guys think of how a lot of companies are removing split-screen from their games and making it so the only multiplayer is online multiplayer? I for one love online multiplayer, but split-screen (and subsequently, system link) aren't entirely useless. Some people still like to play with friends and family in real life. A good model for split-screen is what Halo does, where you can have up to four people playing online at the same time, even if three of those people don't have Xbox Live Gold. Some games that don't have split-screen are Team Fortress 2, Aliens vs Predator (2010), and Medal of Honor (2010). Who else would like to see future games have split-screen and system link in them, in addition to online?

Split screen for co-op or local multiplayer is awesome. My friend and former roommate has a 52" HD LCD TV, yet a couple of games (Res Evil 5, Lost Planet 2) have a stupid splitscreen that uses like 1/3rd or 1/4th of the screen and leaves tonnes of blank space :/

We never played online, except for Lost Planet 2, and he has no interest in the multiplayer :/ So games that didn't have splitscreen were kind of annoying, I don't have the money for a TV and PS3 and the game (or xbox which I have no interest in).

TF2 is a bad example because VALVe has not been allowed to update it for free on the XBOX360 thanks to Microsoft's draconian policies (VALVe admits it as one of their biggest failures, that is, expecting Microsoft to grow up and change that policy).

It wasn't really until the release of Halo 2 on the Xbox that console online gaming took off.

There was one reason I heard that game companies have begun removing split screen multiplayer from games is that if you want to have multiplayer, you will need more copies of the game, so more games will be sold.

You see, MONSTER HUNTER has splitscreen. :p

But I believe that they might as well include it.

Black ops has online multiplayer split screen (i.e. two people can play online in a standard multiplayer match from the same console in split screen mode)

I miss the days of 4way split screen fun :)

Ah yes, I have fine memories of getting a bunch of friends together and playing 4 player James Bond Nightfire, such good fun!

As for lame multiplayer settings, come on! They've been doing this for awhile now. Remember the PS2? Only two controller slots! Unless you shelled out some money for a multitap, of course, and even then most games didn't offer more than 2 players!

Yeah, i remember nightfire... much better than the "better" goldeneye if you ask me.

Yeah but they don't have the fun part in splitscreen (the actual campaign and questing...). I tried to play some arena with my girlfriend (the only split screen mode) and it's... balls.

True that, but arena-mode isn't that horrible. It's just a different way of fighting the monsters than the usual way.

Quake 2 on the first playstation was a glorious game of carnage and death when played with 4 players:D

I haven't played many consoles for awhile, but it seemed to me that was the whole point of console+TV+couch combo, you could get a bunch of friends over and shoot eachother in the face. Why try to turn consoles into wanna-be PCs?

Yup. Agent Under Fire had a better campaign, though, despite lacking Brosnan.
