Spring Patch Info

Firaxis does not owe us an explanation when they don't meet our deadlines in our heads. The fact is that Firaxis did communicate to us about the upcoming patch by releasing a video explaining what they are working on. They did not need to do that. They could have just said nothing and then surprised us with a patch when they were ready. But they took the time to release a video detailing some of the big changes that the patch will bring to the game. And Firaxis does communicate via social media. I've had nothing but positive communication with Sarah, Pete and the devs on Twitter.

Partially agree. I had some comm through Twitter with Anton and Ed too. But those are personal, and should not be taken as "communication with the public". As for the released video, it was obviously a mistake, they did not plan to release it that soon (hence the quick take off). Nobody is saying they owe us anything, it's not a matter of entitlement, but an argument of good vs bad practices.

I'm pretty sure we do not need to go into the details about why bad comm practices are undesirable as a business, or am I wrong? It is pretty self-evident.

I dont think this has anything to do about cross platform multiplayer. I dont see how that could ever happen because of the way patches come out. If they didnt have directx involved and use a crossplatform API then we would see a patch for all OS'es. We should all forget about that ever happening.

On the other hand, Sarah has always been much more responsive, for me at least.

Pete can’t be persuaded to let loose any interesting bits. Sarah does. Although following her on twitter gets you on a rollercoaster ride of cats typing on keyboards and movies you would only watch just because they are so awefull. I would continue to follow her on twitter. If it contains more civ stuff, not just the retweets from announcements shared on all related sites.

Eagle pursuit replied in a post that he thinks this is the last patch before the second expansion. (Multiple months). It would make sense to include it all in one patch so all effort could be put in the next expansion.

It wasn't really Eagle, it was Anton himself... watch the video carefully, and at some point he says something in the line of "I hope you enjoy these changes for the months to come", clearly pointing to this coming patch being the last one for a long while.

I am pretty sure they are already working on the next (last?) expansion, which will come next Summer or at the latest next Fall...

The DLC app and depot (remember Civ GH?) appeared at the end of last May, so we should have 8 months notice before the next expansion. If it comes out in February again, we should see the app and depot in about a month.

The first expansion was only quick by Civ V standards. The first Civ IV expansion was just as quick.

The first expansion was pretty quick, am I the only one thinking we might be getting three expansions?

I suspect that as well, but more based on the ratio of civs per expansion vs remaining series regular civs than how quickly it was released.

So you would get multiplayer up until the next expansion and then boom... no more multiplayer. This maybe the last patch before expansion but are they coming out with an epansion every year?

It is not known yet if there will be 2 or 3 expansions. Some time ago i believe it was said by Ed Beach civ 6 would get about 3 years of support. Untill modding community could get unleashed on final project. A relatively quick 2nd expansion would increase chances of a third expansion

that's my biggest fear with Civ6, because I've the same understanding of the interviews I've read.

I mean I've already given the game's more than one year of my modding time, but I'm not going to wait/waste two more years to see if it's finally a worthy modding platform.

Civ5 was almost as moddable as Civ4 in the end, and maybe even more in some points, so why Civ4 has so many total conversion and big projects compared to Civ5 ? Maybe they've waited too long to "unleash the modding community" ?

And it's worst with Civ6, we're 18 months after release and there are some things that I still can't do with it that I could do on Civ5 release day...

I’ve seen a couple of succesfull civ 6 mods/projects die by lack of continued support. Ananse mod was great and i’ve got my doubts on MOAR unit mods. I’ve got limited knowledge what modders can do with the game and what not. But i am hoping civ 6 will get into a more respectable state relatively soon. Like in its 2nd year. So the modding community will be on it when the game is in final state. Civ 4 mods made me play the game for 2-3000 hours more because of it. It was amazing in its debt.

I noticed that Aspyr hasn't done a Mac or Linux QA update since the "Patch Preview Oops". I wonder if this whole rigmarole has to do with cross-platform multi-player. Aspyr has repeatedly claimed that the issues preventing that feature are on the PC side. Maybe Firaxis is finally and belatedly getting serious about it.

Hey, that was my idle speculation when the video was first released and then pulled. Get in line, pal. :)

None of that. Facts prevent idle speculation, which is all we have to discuss at the moment (except, you know things that are totally off topic).

What isn't fact?

If this will in fact be the last patch we get before another expansion drops, and assuming the next expansion is some time in January/February 2019, that's quite a long time to go without any developper updates/patches. It might mean that they're putting their all into this patch to make sure the community stays happy for the next 6-9 months.
