A Culture of War - Struggle for Safety
Excerpts from an essay about the Ramonian Culture in the Fire Academy of Ramonia by Archmage Ligus.
"Since the creation of our nation we have been at war. Each year new campaigns are started to ensure the existence of our very nation, our ideals, our culture and our entire freedom. Like no other nation we Ramonians are fighting to beat the forces of Wu'di on every battlefied. Campaigns have been fought in the North, the push the invading Wu'di forces back into the sea. Campaigns have been fought in the West to help our western relatives in their struggle against Semnon. Campaigns have been fought in the East to secure our southern lands against a possible invasion by the Triad.
And in the following years we will continue to fight campaigns. The reason for our numerous wars is not some kind of eternal hatred against the oppressing Wu'di, although this hatred is indeed deeply integrated into our culture, but it is fear.
Yes we Ramonians fear! We, the most warefaring successor state of the former Wu'di empire fear! We Ramonians, who march from one war to the other, from one battlefield to the next, we fear! We don't fear for our lifes, or that of our families. Never has a Ramonian soldier fled from the battlefield and even when large parts of our army are destroyed and the death are covering the ground we continue to fight on, only to withdraw when no other options are left. We don't fear for our fertile fields and our productive mines, or our deep knowleadge of magic. We Ramonians fear to once again loose our freedom, our independence. We know that the enemy is still strong and numerous and we know that we can only survive by defeating him completly, or atleast damaging him enough to make him undangerous. The threat is obvious and therefore our enemy is obvious.
As it is obvious for an Ramonian, that warfare is most necessary to defend our liberty, a warrior is a very respected person in our realm. When our armys return from the battlefield the people greet them with festivals of many kinds. But they don't celebtrate their victory or the defeat of the enemy. They celebrate their valour, their effort to defend our freedom. Even after a most humanilating defeat the people celebrate our soldiers like heroes. Even the widows and orphans are celebrating the comrades of their lost realtives, although their hearths are surely blackened by their lost. This is the reason why our armies can continue to march on, from one battle to the other. Because the men know that they are supported, they know that the people are counting on them.
(...)
As a result it is obvious that Ramonia will never fall. Because not only our armies are fighting the enemy - our very culture is facing the enemy. We will march on and in the end we will crush all who threaten our safety. Sometimes we will be beaten on the battlefield, but we will just rise again and continue our struggle. Each defeat will only strengthen our determination to fight on.
One day in the far future when the Wu'di are long beaten and all their followers have been destroyed, and when those who came after the Wu'di have been defeated, and those who came ofter those - Then we Ramonians will lay down our weapons, bury our armours an let loose our warhorses and then we will able to live a peacefull life. This will be the paradise.
