Having four Nacelles isn't always just for the mass of the ship - some classes such as the Cheyenne and the Constellation used them to greatly increase their range, speed, efficiency, and especially their ability to stay at Warp for long times.

Instead of using all four Nacelles to achieve their rated maximum, these ships often used only pairs of Nacelles at a time. When the Nacelles reached their limits, the ship simply switched to the other two Nacelles, allowing the original Nacelles to "rest".

This meant that the such-equipped vessels could travel at relatively high Warp for a normal amount of time, or it could maintain cruising speed for twice as long as other ships.

The reason why four Nacelles didn't become a standard design in Starfleet is that they were notoriously difficult to build, repair, and maintain. Even the tiniest fluctuation in the field generated by a single Nacelle could bring the ship out of Warp, and when you have to keep four of them working at peak efficiency to simply stay in Warp, so you can imagine just what a headache the ships gave to their engineers!

Thanks Matress for this lesson in Warp field dynamics, makes sense to me...
I'm not planning to make a Civ IV ST mod, but I know of some people that wanted to start one. It is however not likely to take off any time soon since to my knowledge there hasn't been one single new Civ IV unit yet, only retexturings of old ones. Until some tools have been developed to create truely new units in Civ IV I think any large scale mod will be quite limited...
Of course I don't keep track of the developments in Civ IV land since I'm too busy having a career in Civ III...

@Matress, as of now you can't add truly unique new units or buildings. You can only reskin the ones in civ IV. That is a shame, because with the ability to have events and the flexibility, I could do Justice to a War of the Worlds mod along with a Trek one.

Also you are correct about the number of nacelles, but in the case of the Mars, the reason WAS mass.

@Flamand, I looked over your TOS ships, and to my surprise I forgot to send you the Destroyer! It looks like the Gagarin, except for no module on top of the saucer. I will get that to you in the next installment.

The Tmp fleet list is the same as the TOS, except switch a Fighter with a worker ship.

Just for grins I thought I would post a pic of the test render for the Fed Tmp Dreadnaught. All the other pre renders are on the ST Mod forums. These models are sweet! A shame folks can't make units any larger.

Its a fighter used by a future nation descended from Japan. Because of the shape I thought it could be used as a Klingon fighter as well.

I've heard that firaxis is planning a unit creator/LH creator program ment to plug directly into Civ4

Thanks very kind, but I think Thorgrimm has got the Klingons very well covered by now with 4 different fleets...
Maybe Thor should release a list of races that still need models, because quite honestly I have no idea myself which ones are still needed...

I was thinking it should have two attacks. One would be a blaster animation, similiar to star wars fighters(or your Cylon Raider... ) the other would be a Star Trek type Phaser. Don't worry about a bombing animation, I got that one covered...

These are the units of today: the Kaula tug/transport ship and the merchantman transport.

This is a little planatary defense unit I have come up with. It is designed to go with Vadus' space terrain. The planet is added just for this demo... The little shocks in the demo occur because of the different viewpoints between the 4 animations.

Sog, I have not seen anything from Flamescreen's ST ground units for a long time. Maybe you could make ground units for the races. As we will need ground units to. So if you could do those, that would be much appreciated.
