State of the Union Thread

Why does this remind me of a High School pep rally, but with both teams there, frequently talking about another team?

Ah well, it's over. I'm just glad I got my daily dose of Freedom rhetoric. I was starting to miss it.

It always amazes me how secure this place must be. I mean, think of what would happen if someone got a bomb in there. Good job to security.

And Dem response coming up shortly ...

Overall - the usual blah stuff. Seemed a bit shorter that previous ones. Aggressively went after Congress on a few things though, but overall, fewer points and plans.

Well, on the balance that was thoroughly underwhelming. And the call for more science funding will get bogged down in the legislative process, so we won't see any significant boost to funding this year...

Meh.

CNN feed was funny. Some guy getting an autograph from Bush asked him how he could give a rebate to those that didn't put any bait in.

It's a pity the UN can't get off their butts and do what they are supposed to do. I suspect that Germany and France have more than enough troops to handle this one. Why should the US do it alone if the UN won't? Seems that last time the US acted without UN approval we got slammed for it.

Because we oppose it.

So what's with the blue tie? Bush trying to undermine the Democrats by stealing their colors?

Bush has generally worn blue ties; although Clinton did, too, Bush really made it a part of his wardrobe.

For what it's worth, I like the blue tie, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the next president wear gold ties more often.

Did anyone see the creepy grin on Cheney's face.

The VP always looks like that.

Charities don't pay taxes, but Bush wants them on the federal take.

If we've decided as a country to do fund certain things, shouldn't we fund those who do it well, regardless of who they are?

Besides, charities are non-profit; what's to tax?

What book is Pelosi reading? Is that the speech?

It took me a while to figure that out, too... but I realized everyone had it and they seemed to all know when to stand and sit based on that.

i'm supposed to be watching this for school. am i missing anything? has he said nucular yet? or al-ki-A-da?

N-word count: 4 times total.

I think Bush will name his new Cabinet for 2008:

Jose Cuervo
Johnny Walker
Jack Daniels
Bud Weiser
Jim Beam

It's "Daniel," not "Daniels."

Is just me, or does the SOTU resemble a church sermon?

Not like any church I've been to... mine needs seats like that.

Because China is sending weapons to the Sudanese gov't, aren't they? The UN effectively has its hands tied.

And Dem response coming up shortly ...

That was quite possibly the worst load of crap speech I've seen in my life.

Ron Paul won the text message poll on how well Bush did with the State of the Union. [/Alan Colmes actually being funny during coverage]

What a "meh" speech, in my view.

ROFLZ

I lol'd.

I loved when she told us to have a good night with sweet dreams.

But responses are usually not that well (and obviously nowhere near as long).

Sebelius' response was wooden as hell, but Obama taped a response, too.

check it out here:
http://matthewyglesias.theatlantic.com/

Going back here, a few people commented there that Sebelius used a lot of the jargon used by the Obama camp. Strange that I didn't pick up on that as I was watching. Mostly, it outlined the Democratic take and in that, she did complete that task.

Use the al lpowerfull American diplomatic influence to pass a UN resolution not veto-ed by China or Russia requesting a UN military intervention in Sudan, and then ask us to lead it. We'll be glad to provide troops.

Beginning now. Realtime reactions to the idiocy to come here.

So what's with the blue tie? Bush trying to undermine the Democrats by stealing their colors?

You know, I always thought of Republicans as blue and Democrats as red, even before Bush and Clinton...

I missed the State of the Union, though - fell asleep early. (I seem to do that when politicians talk. :p)

I missed it - is the state of the union still strong? How about confident?

I love how he said a balanced budget by 2012. IE, not during my administration. This way I can spend and please as I wish and pass the difficult task of balancing a budget onto someone else.

Which is why democracy with its short terms doesnt work.

After a few minutes, the wife and I put in Disc 3 of The Wire: Season 2. I assume that it was much better (the character of "Ziggy" obviously plays Bush's role).

I do have one question, though: did he discuss human-animal hybrids this year? Ever since he mentioned that, I've been worried.

Yea, the SOTU wasn't very good unfortunately.

Loved how the Democrats didn't stand when Bush identified the social security problem to come. Brilliance!

~Chris
Bush identified that problem back in the 1970's when running for Congress. Just more moving of the doom and gloom goalposts that has been going on for decades.
