staxnes: To Kill a Mockingbird

Update II IT I 680-660 (BC/BCE)

Domestic Events:

The Olmecs learn the vital lesson that you never use the same tricks twice, very bad underestimating your enemies and your friends as well. (more on military section)

To their east, the Mayans have unified into a Confederation of City States, a potential formidable opponent of the young Olmec State. The fact that they do human sacrifice as well as piercing in their genital areas itself is quite worrisome…

Frustrated and increasingly infuriated Iberians have unified into a Confederation under the command of a charismatic Clan Chieftain and although many Iberians still refuse to join the Confederation, they may not have a choice…

The Oran Triad has been enlarged to include Carthage and was promptly renamed into the Oran Quadrad though many of the upper class in their nations are beginning to wonder what was the purpose of an alliance when all their enemies are included into the Alliance. The economy however has slowed down undoubtedly due to the massive outbreaks of fighting in Italy, Greece, and the Levant. (see spotlight)

The Carthaginian Consul experiences a “rebirth” of sorts and drastically changed Carthaginian policies. He has allied with Algeria, a long enemy, as well as shifting focus from land power to the sea. Naturally this doesn’t do well for the people’s faith in him… (- 1 confidence)

Sienna and Napolia worriedly eye each other watching for any troop movements on the part of the enemy though what really happens is the direct opposite. (see spotlight)

The Sicilian King dies but not before laying the groundwork for a massive war in Italy. His loyal Generals loyal even past his death carries out his orders and begins, the War of Italian Unification. (see military section)

The Dacians strangely seem to have more gold to spend then normal…

Macedonia strips the land clean of men, women and children alike arming them with weapons. None the less Macedonia should have collapsed but only the massive army prevented it. Macedonia is completely broke. Though things don’t exactly get better (see spotlight)

Sparta and Athens both amass huge armies in a final gambit, to determine the future of Greece reducing their manpower numbers as well as number of workers. This makes the Athenians unhappy as they’re unused to this. (-1 Sparta and Athenian Economy, -1 Athenian Confidence)

Minoa experiences an economic rebirth from the Trojans whom fled the Fall of Troy and came to Minoa to work and settle. (+1 economy Minoa)

Egypt collapses into civil war! The assassination of Pharaoh Ramses VI by neo-Greek Republicans was the last straw leading to a full blown war between the Southern (1) Nobility influenced by the ideals of the Athenian Republican System with the Northern (2) Nobility supporting the return of the Pharaoh! However war has yet to move beyond the preparation phrase and things are still quiet…

The Hittite Empire seems to be planning something big, and naturally massively increases her army… (-1 army training)

Skilled Phoenician craftsmen and scholars flee to Carthage causing an increase in education and later followed by the Phoenician Fleet (+1 education) (+12 ships) (see military section)

Persia arises from the east sporting the first horsemen the civilized world has yet to seen! Her armies are poised to conquer Mesopotamia especially after the recent debacle…

The nation of Andhra has been reached by the traders of Sampa. They are said to be a peaceful trading nation trading with natives past the Eastern Sea.

In China, things have stayed quite peaceful as the King Zheng of Qin consolidates his lands, King Wu stabilizing his throne, and the Kings of Qi and Yan attending a royal marriage. In fact, their children were married to become the future King and Queen of a new state, Shu. This was allowed by the fact that the people were already friendly with each other and in fear of a Shang and Qin Invasion. The Great Scholars of all Three States are beginning to call this time, “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” :mischief:

Military Events

The Olmecs continue their merry way aligning with tribes and clans and attacking their enemy and proceeding to then annex their “ally.” The same trick never works twice and the rest of the Zapotecs caught on really quick and spreading rumors of a vast Zapotec Clan fiercely against the Olmecs, they lured a rather large contingent of them into battle marching in front with their Zapotec Allies behind. If the military commanders were smarter they would have noticed, but by the time they did it was too late. The army was crushed between the two forces and only the Jaguar Warriors were able to cut their way through.

(-3 Olmecian hundreds, -1 Jaguar Warrior Hundred)

The Sarsicans, Berbers and Cordovans all continue to expand in Iberia taking over the lands of the tribes friendly or at least cordial to them. Then running in to the massive “state” of well… Iberia though nothing is known about them right now. Nothing at all.

The Algerian Berbers have expanded south taking the possession of the lands of the friendly neighboring Berbers. However, they are unable to maintain a firm grip on them due to the large raids of the Berbers beyond.

(-1 Berber Hundred)

War in Italy breaks! For real this time. As the Siennese and Napolians eye each other cautiously they couldn’t see where their true enemy came from. The Northern Italics having been given ample time to think about the future decides that Sienna is an obvious enemy and launches an attack while most of the Siennese Army is in the south. They managed to take 2 cities before being stopped only a few miles from Sienna herself! While the Siennese Armies traveled north, the Napolians considered advancing against them though they were attacked by the Sicilians. Attacking first with a diversionary strike from their gains from Epir, they engaged the Napolian Army in battle while the Sicilian Navy unloaded soldiers upon the gates of Napolia itself and forced her surrender. Shortly after the news broke out, the Napolian Army surrendered to Sicily.

(-1 Sicilian Economy, 2 Napolian Economies to Sicily, -1 Siennese Economy, -3 Siennese Hundreds -13 Sicilian Hundreds, 6 Napolia Hundreds to Sicily, -Napolia.)

The Dacians have launched raids followed by armies and has seized control of some lands in Athenian Macedon and Byzantium. Rumors are that the Hittites paid them…

(-2 Athenian Levy Hundreds)

The Great War continues in Greece with Macedonia, Athens, Sparta and Apollonia fighting it out. Helicarnassus watches the Hittite closely but they make no move… (see spotlight and below)

(-1 Athenian Economy, 1 Spartan Economy to Athens, -31 Athenian Hundreds, -9 Athenian Levy Hundreds, -2 Peltasts Hundreds, -Sparta, -Apollonia, -Macedonia.)

The Hittites instead of focusing on the Greeks in Helicarnassus instead strikes south into the fertile and wealthy lands of Phoenicia. Invading with an overwhelming and well trained and led army, they took city after city looting and ravaging the cities until only Cyprus remained in Phoenicia’s hands. Whose governor soon surrendered the island to the Hittites on the promise that it would be spared the depravity of the mainland.

(3 economies from Phoenicia to New Hittites, -14 New Hittite Hundred, -Phoenicia)

War breaks out in Mesopotamia after several “incidents” in where the Babylonian King is nearly shot by arrows which he claims to be from Assyria and as his armies advanced against Nineveh, the Assyrians gave ground refusing battle. Of course, as Babylon’s army was away the Sawians invaded Babylon and besieging her namesake as well as the surrounding countryside. The Babylonians then withdrew from Assyria as Assyria’s own army attacked another area of Babylon. No major battles have occurred yet, but several small ones have been fought.

(-6 Babylonian Hundreds, -5 Assyrian Hundreds, -2 Sawai Hundreds)

The advance of Persia against the Aryans have pushed them into Mohenjo Daro where they have swept aside the border guard and have even taken a city!

(-5 Mohenjo Daro Hundreds)

Spotlight:

“Who let loose the dogs of war?” –King Xenophon of Sparta before the Battle of Athens

With massive armies raised on both sides, Sparta and Athens it was only inevitable that the two armies massive would clash in the largest battle so far to date. The Athenian General Demosthenes in the north began his advance south against the remnants of the Macedonians or so he came to though but they were nowhere in site when he advanced upon their last city so he continued on to Boetia. While this was happening First Citizen Pericles with rousing speeches kept the morale of Athens up and led the defense against Sparta with night raids to keep them on their toes.

The Macedonians knowing that the Athenians would come, had armed every man, woman and child and as a massive group moved towards Apollonia, the only vector of safety. With this massive mob of armed people they crossed the border, overran the border guards and captured Epir. King Hircles died before the city fell to the Macedonians and Apollonia is no more even if remnants remain in the north. The Macedonians are likewise disorganized as well. Anarchy reins in what was once Apollonia.

The plight of Athens was never desperate as her navy reigned supreme bringing in supplies from throughout the world and devastated Sparta’s economy by launching raids. That did nothing but put bronze in the spines of the Spartans who knew that the time of reckoning would come between victory and defeat. Unable to breach Athen’s thick walls without massive casualties and learning of Demosthenes march south, he prepared for battle upon the plains of Athens he know the Athenians would give. As Demosthenes advanced south, the Spartans withdrew before him and the wily General knew that Battle would come.

On the Fields of Athens the fate of Greece was decided. However if you believe the stories, the flying of geese on the day before had already shown the God’s Favor towards the side to become the Rulers of Greece. And as the geese flew overhead, the two armies readied themselves for battle. The Spartans arrayed themselves in formation while the Athenian forces converged from two directions, Demosthenes from the northwest and Pericles from the northeast. The Spartans arrayed themselves in a single line and waited for the end.

The Athenians themselves linked up forces before advancing on the Spartans with a longer battle line. The two steamrollers slowly moved towards each other only stopping when the enemy was but 500 yards away where the leaders of the two armies marched to the front and fought in single combat which ended in a draw. The battle had begun. The Athenians were the first to move wreaking havoc upon the Spartan Formations with their peltasts. The Spartans took it quietly with no word of anguish and with steel in their hearts they charged, a remarkable achievement with their heavy armor. The two steamrollers collided and it seemed for a while that the battle would end as a draw. The Spartans had greater training and skill, but the Athenians were more numerous.

But, the soul of Pericles was much more then the soul of Xenophon. As Xenophon threw his reserves for one victorious push against the Athenians, and when his councilors urged retreat, Pericles refused. Instead, he ordered the battle to continue and so it did. The Spartans continued to hammer away at the center forcing the Athenians back and back. But such an advance left their flanks vulnerable which Pericles took advantage of and he threw his reserves there. They marched slowly but surely and the Spartans never knew what hit them as they were struck from the back by the Athenians. King Xenophon himself died, leading his Household Guard to their glorious death.

And as the Athenians surrounded the Spartans and demanded their surrender, the Spartans would shout back with pride. “The Spartans die, but never surrenders.” The rest is history as the Athenians crushed the Spartans. Sparta died with Xenophon and she was left with nothing and threw herself at the feet of victorious Athens. Athens had her victory.

In the interest of peace, we invite the leader of your nation to come to a meeting (located at the point where our 3 nations share the same border) where we will discuss the future of our three great nations with words instead of with arms. You may bring as much army as you want for this trip.

That was a nice update. I don't really understand how I lost 31 hundreds, tho. ;)

My project should be at 2/6, no? Or was it at 0/6 prior to update?

From Shu
To Shang

We would be willing to come to such a meeting for a peaceful future.

From Qin
To Shang

While we doubt that the meeting will have any conclusive result and ever wary of shang's infamous merchant tricks, King Zheng will send his eldest son to be his representative due to his elderly age.

Yeah. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted...
