Mini-NOTW I: "To Kill a Mockingbird" (Game Thread)

Is this another one of your tricks, Tasslehoff? You lied about Ekolite. You killed Paulus III by tricking thomas.

I am also going to vote for LightFang. I'll even be kind enough to present evidence.

Part 1- Winston Hughes. He knew he was going to die, the night he was killed. In that night, he sent out a message to several people. He named three suspicious characters: Ekolite, LightFang, and one other (remaining unnamed). This was based on their refusal to share any information with him, as well as failure to respond to further inquiries and information gathered from other sources. The next morning, he was dead.

That's funny. He told me that Ekolite and <unnamed man> had given incredibly sketchy/no backgrounds and to be wary of them.

When he asked me of my history, I gave it to him. He wrote me a letter in the night, saying that he'd appreciate any more information that I could give, but unfortunately I was too slow in replying (OOC: I was busy and I figured I'd respond the next day.)

Well, let me exonerate myself. Do you want me to give you my life's story?

Part 2 - Me. I have access to knowledge beyond your comprehension. Unfortunately, it is also often beyond my comprehension. This knowledge comes to me in the form of cryptic dreams. Last night, my dream showed a bag of coins, clearly representing a merchant, resisting the strike. .of a giant emerald. I believe the emerald has multiple meanings. One of them is poison. The other could be a great number of things. Either way, your appearance is suspicious.

Now, perhaps you'd be willing to be more open about your abilities, you might be able to explain my dream and convince us about your innocence.

I suppose you do then. Let me reach you in PM...I will explain something about myself that I hope establishes my innocence.

Living comment: Bold is my way of adding emphasis, and I don't feel like editing and changing it to italics. :p

Vote Tally: Lightfang: 1 (Rhawn)

GM Comment: There are about 4-5 hours to the update and only a single vote is present. Remember, a player needs one fourth of the votes to be hung.

Also remember to vote on the sword item, and that you can support instead of accuse, should you wish to.

Update: Evening (day 4)

Corrected tally:
Lightfang: 2 (Icekommander, Rhawn),
Tasslehoff: 1 (BananaLee).

The villagers, reduced to a tiny group, gathered in the village square. Another improvised gallow had been constructed. They had become used to the thought of hanging each other, apparently. Icekommander and Tasslehoff was dragging the local merchant, LightFang, towards the barrel underneath the gallow. LightFang did his best to resist as he was dragged over the cobblestones, but everyone could see he was weakened severely - it was clear to see as he spit on the ground that his spit was green like PaulusIII's blood had been. Nevertheless, the helpless man was dragged towards the gallows...

When Suddenly someone grabbed Icekommander and threw him to the ground. BananaLee, the stonemason, quickly pushed the innkeeper away from LightFang, yelling: "Why are you following that madman's advice? Can't you see he is the killer?" Tasslehoff let go of LightFang's arm and turned on BananaLee, punching him right in the face. As the Stonemason fell to the ground, he disappeared into thin air.

Spoiler :
BananaLee was a mirror image!

As Tasslehoff turned around to drag LightFang those last metres to the gallow, LightFang had heaved himself to his feet, and in his hand he was holding a long and slim dark blade, that looked almost as a hole in the world. A lesser netherblade. The villagers stood as if frozen as LightFang spoke:
"How dare you petty villagers dare disturb me in my art! I have spent longer than all of your lifetimes to perfect the art of killing, and a bunch of Amurite children seek to stop me! It will never be!"

His appearance changed visibly as they watched, his skin fading until it was the colour of smoke, his eyes slim slits, hiding red eyes. A particularly evil-looking Sidar stood where the merchant had only seconds ago.

The silence was broken as the maniac, Tasslehoff, threw himself after LightFang; the killer almost eluded the body of the madman, but was thrown off balance. With a cry, the stranger J-Man joined the fray: "In the name of Lugus!", he cried as he jumped at LightFang, attempting to disarm him. LightFang threw off the stranger and stood up, fumbling to get hold of his weapon.

He didn't look up as Thomas.Berubeg, the hunter, brought his sword down on him. Quietly, LightFang fell to the ground, a large wound across his breast. The sword in Thomas' hand shone like a sun.

Spoiler :
LightFang was the killer! Innocent victory!

J-Man looked up at the hunter, gasping. This was the relic he had been looking for, having been stolen only a couple of weeks ago from a temple to Lugus. For, as it later turned out, J-Man had been sent by the Radiant Guard.

Innocent victory! Awards and epilogue will be up later! Congratiolations (sp?) to the winners! And thanks, LightFang, for a decent sadistic roleplay :)

Ghosts, players and lurkers alike, feel free to discuss the game!

lurker's comment: I'm just glad the innocents finally won one. I was beginning to think it'd never happen again! (No offense, LightFang and BananaLee. ;) )

All the right things happened in the third night...
... for all the wrong reasons.

Thanks Thomas for poisoning me. You were a big help to the innocent cause that way... no really! No sarcasm in this statement! For if I had not been poisoned I would surely have been hung, granting the wolves another free kill.

I'm surprised that Tasslehoff still came back on his accusation of LightFang, though. I had sent him a message that LightFang was incapacitated by my poison, and because no regular kill had happened that night I'd think he would call him out on it.

Ekolite, I'm sorry about being so obvious with my prophethood and my accusations. Couldn't resist over-roleplaying it.

Well I didn't always have a lot of time on my hands, and I was trying out a more isolationist strategy. The basic idea was that if I didn't speak to anyone, no one would be suspicious of me. I guess there was a bit of a flaw in that idea though .

By the way guys, the whole prophet thing... and the immune from murder thing... yeah :p.

Rhawn was the true prophet. PaulusIII only detected whether people moved out at night. Perhaps that's too many innocent abilities in a small game, but I think Paulus' early catch of Ekolite (he scanned Eko the only night Eko actually was out at night) was a nice twist.

Oh, concerning mnotw II: It will probably be at least a couple of days/weeks, and I would like to see some of you there, especially those who have been active and roleplayish! The next game will have 18 spots, and will be better than this one.

Char PMs and achievements will be up sometime tomorrow or later tonight. Cheers.

In case anyone's interested, the following were my 'insurance' PMs, sent just before my death (which, given how aggressively I went after the info, seemed inevitable).

All four got this:
Spoiler :
As you know, since the last murder took place I have been gathering info on the group. I have discovered many interesting things over the course of my investigation, some of which may be crucial in catching this monster. However, since everyone knows that I've been doing this, and since some have given less-than-convincing answers, I fear that I may be killed before morning comes.

Hence, as a sort of insurance policy, I have decided to share some of the information I have acquired with certain people. You are one of those people. Be aware, however, that I am not telling you everything here - the full picture is shared between the recipients.

...

Based on all this, my prime suspects at this time are:

Ekolite - he will not reply at all in private, and his behaviour in public also seems suspicious.

LightFang - his information is very light, and he has failed to respond to further inquiries.

BananaLee - his information is fairly light, and his claim that he built the tavern would require him to be very old indeed.

If anyone else claims to have been one of my insurance contacts, you can confirm this by asking for half of the password: swordfish (ie. one of you says 'sword' the other says 'fish').
As for the info, this was what I sent to Icekommander:

Swordfish was the password my friends and I used when we were kids, as an excuse to deny younger siblings entry to the 'forts' we used to build in the woods. :D

I don't suppose anyone actually used it, did you?

I like how you managed to get the two wolves on the Suspect List on day 1. Unfortunately, seeing other 'evidence' I went after the wrong one on your list, as Ekolite was already slightly suspicious. (and yes, I and Sepuku used the password!)

Mixing the two potions together was just an idea I had as soon as the potion came up for vote. While Diamondeye had given a pretty strong hint that it was poisonous, he also hinted at how it might not have full effect on everyone. That second potion made me go 'hmmm... now what if I used two poisons instead of one?'.

In fact, I tried to get Thomas to poison LightFang after Ekolite's death was certain on day 3 - because I was still not convinced that my potion would kill, I needed to have the second poison ready. Unfortunately that was not to be as I believe Thomas would only poison LightFang if Ekolite came up guilty. He was not, and thus I got the poison instead.

Character PMs (including spelling errors :p)

Spoiler Bard (Love) :
Official Title: Bard
Role: Bard: No special ability
Item(s): Potion (poisoneous, can be lethal - order to use must be sent at DAY)
Strength: 1
Personal Goal: Survive!
Background: You used to court the Amurite nobles with your singing and plinging your lyre, being directly in the core of the nation from where power streamed. And you loved it, did you! Nothing is more exciting than courting nobles in order to attain power - and, if needed, to discreetly dispatch of a rival.
Oh yes, the life in the Amurite Court certainly pleased you, and you enjoyed it fully! Unfortunately, one day you bit off more than you could chew: You poisoned a noble who had been so cautious as to have a servant taste his wine before him.

Leaving a lot of angry nobles, both rivals and masters, and a dead servant behind, you fled to Awrail. Of course, off all cities where you could end up, you picked the one where someone with a more beautiful voice than you resided - damn!

Eager to prove yourself now that Clairone has died, you decided to stay and help catch the killer. Surely, once you have caught him single-handedly, you will surely be able to smooth-talk your way right to the top. The mayor is old, after all, and needs to retire soon. Provided he outlives the killer, that is.

With you as a "souvenir" from your time at the court, you have a small vial of poison. A couple of years ago, it could have knocked over an elephant, but you doubt it will be able to kill a full-grown man now. Still, it might do the trick should you want to dispatch of a weakling - or "soften up" someone else.

Spoiler Blacksmith (Sepuku) :
Official Title: Blacksmith
Role: Blacksmith: If you get your hands on a sword, you can forge another one.
Item(s): None
Strength: 2
Personal Goal: Survive to aquire a sword and smithe another one.
Background: You are the blacksmith of the village - normally only concerned with making horseshoes and barrel bands, you know that you could forge a magnificent sword - if only you had some kind of design to work from.
You figure that if you could get your hands on a sword, you could forge one that looks like it. Since it looks like the village is in trouble, it could use some more weapons - and your strong arms - to help catch the killer.

You are helping to track down the killer simply because you like the mayor and the village, and to protect the others and the women and children from the killer. That's how you are - a nice fellow.
Also, your life's work - the small village smithy - is here and not anywhere else. And staying here as the village blacksmith after your wife and son returns to the village is enough to make you happy. What more does one need, really?

Spoiler City Guard (Ekolite) :
Official Title: City Guard
Role: Bodyguard: You can protect people at night.
Item(s): Sword (+1 strength)
Strength: 2
Personal Goal: Keep the mayor and the innkeeper alive.
Background: You love your home. The green september grass, the faintest smell of magic in the air, and the beautiful song of Clairone to call you home from your night watch.
Or at least, that is how it used to be. Now, with Clairone dead and a killer loose, you fear that things will change in Awrail - to the worse.

With the simple logic of a man whose proffession is keeping sentry at a time of night where nobody can see and beat up unwelcome guests, you reason that the innkeeper and the mayor make up the heart of what is left of the calm spirit in the village. Keeping them alive would mean a lot to you.

Your job as the night guard has given you some advantages that can be of use now; you need very little sleep. And you have a weapon. You can protect people at night, and, as long as you have a weapon, without personal risk.
Should you somehow lose your weapon, you can delay the attacker enough that the original victim will escape, but at the expense of your own life.

Spoiler Local Merchant (LightFang) :
Official Title: Local Merchant
Role: Killer ("wolf"): At night, you send in a kill order to me, the GM. You will then attempt to murder that person.
Item(s): Lesser Netherblade (+1 Strength, allows killing, unstealable!)
Strength: 2
Background: You are a Sidar Divided Soul who has been sent to "break" the resistance of Awrail, as to make it easier to annex into the Sidar empire, since it's location is very close to that of a strong shadow ley-line (mana source, basically).

A couple of weeks ago, you infiltrated the village and killed the local merchant, taking his place. Due to your skill at subtlety and acting, no-one has noticed your real identity yet. You also killed the local stonemason, who you have now replaced with your own "Severed Soul" (basically a mirror image).
While keeping your Severed Soul present would make overpowering the villagers easier, you can use it to cast off doubts about your own person - when the Severed Soul is "lynched", it will vanish, thereby revealing to the villagers that they are facing a Sidar.

You carry with you your trusted Lesser Netherblade, a weapon inspired by that of the Sidar hero, Rathus Denmora. While not as powerful as his weapon, it provides an increment in strength. You will also use it to commit the killings - only Clairone was weak enough to be killed without using a weapon.

Your goal is to kill off so many villagers that you (and perhaps your Severed Soul) can overpower the remaining residents.

If you are hanged, even if your Severed Soul is still alive, it will result in an innocent victory.

Spoiler Magic Adept (PaulusIII) :
Official Title: Magic Adept
Role: Caster: Each night, you can pick a person. A rune will be placed on that persons home, and any[/] traffic will be noted.
Item(s): Potion (You've made this yourself, and are not quite sure of the effect, yet. But it looks poisoneous. You can feed it someone - send in orders at DAY)
Strength: 1
Personal Goal: Have the Traveller killed
Background: You are a young and ambitious magic adept. Apart from several cantrips of little importance, you have managed to learn a nifty spell that allows you to conjure a rune on a persons home, which detects all traffic, in and out.
You take pride in being a brilliant logic thinker - and as any logic thinker would conclude, the man who arrived only a couple of days ago must be the killer! Therefore, you find it imperative to show your reasoning capabilities and have the Traveller hanged.

With what few reagents there are in this desolate realm (despite the heavy ley lines), you have managed to brew a potion that looks strangely poisoneous. You suspect it could kill someone if they drank it, but you are not sure it is powerful enough to knock everyone out - someone who isn't as meagre or you or as old as the mayor might be able to survive.

Your family thinks poorly of your magic skills, which is why you have chosen to stay and prove to them that your skills will enable you to find the killer. The rest of your family has fled the village and are waiting until the killer has been found.

Spoiler Mayor (Winston Hughes) :
Official Title: Mayor
Role: Mayor (innocent): You have the deciding word in tied votes
Item(s): None
Strength: 1
Personal goal: Catch the killer before half of the players are killed.
Background: You are among the oldest men of Awrail, and definately the oldest of the men who stayed back after Clairone's death. You remember her coming to the city, as a young girl, many years before.
You were the first to accept her, and it was you who raised her, like your own daughter - you have no children yourself due to the fact that your wife was taken from you by some strange disease, far too early. You have never married again.

You are infuriated by the killers audacity - to kill the girl you love as a daughter, and whom everyone in the town cares for! Surely, only some sort of wicked monster could have done this. You will not halt until you have caught the killer or have been slain by his hand!
But you must vote with caution! Your words are respected by the villagers, and it bears great authority - any vote that would otherwise be a tie will turn out in your favour.

Spoiler Maniac (Tasslehoff) :
Official Title: Maniac
Role: Follower of the Overlords: You dream! Those dreams might prove clues, or might be nonsense.
Item(s): Amulet of the Seas (Immunity to poisoning)
Strength: 2
Personal Goal: At the end of the game, possess the Amulet of the Seas and the Ruby Ring
Background: You don't exactly remember a lot from your life - a lot of it is lost in the mists of your dreams. Your days are mostly pointless, and your nights are only seldom visited by the blessed dreams of the Overlords.
You didn't really choose to stay in the city, you just didn't really notice the others leaving. Your famished mind has only now grasped that there is a killer among the group, but it does not concern you all that much.

You liked Clairone - you thought (probably as the only one) that she was beautiful. You wanted to marry her, perhaps. But somehow you never quite gathered yourself enough to talk to her, and now it's too late. That saddens a mind even as misty as yours.

The other thing you like is jewelry. You possess an Amulet of the Seas, an item that ensures the protection of the Overlords - at least against poisons. You would very much like to get your hands on another jewel, perhaps a ruby ring you know the Hunter possesses - or at least he did some time ago, you don't quite remember. It's all a bit hazy, really.

Spoiler Drunkard (Rhawn) :
Official Title: Drunkard
Role: Prophet: Each night, you can scan a person to find out their role.
Item(s): None
Strength: 1
Personal Goal: Have the innkeeper die.
Background: You were once blessed with visions by the gods. You could foretell the future, even alter it if you felt the need. But after living a life full of important tasks and roles, you felt you needed a break.
You settled down in the small village of Awrail, where nobody needed your council. Still, the voices would speak to you, and in order to make them go away, you drank. That's right, drank. Lots and lots of beer.

Now, your visions only haunt your dreams. It seems as if the gods have abandoned you in your pitiful situation, but it also looks like a small spark of their divine presence has been left within you.
And now it looks like your abilities are needed again: You can, at night, decide that you want to know about another person in the party, and your dreams will be haunted by your long lost angelic whispers.
It is painful, yes, but effective.

In fact, you hope to redeem yourself. Seeing the Traveller strolling around like nothing could ever harm him makes you jealeous. Perhaps, if you could just quit the addiction to alcohol (by having the innkeeper killed, perhaps?), and help catch the killer, the gods would have mercy upon you and return to you your former grace?

Spoiler Traveller (J-Man) :
Official Title: Traveller
Role: Radiant Guard
Item(s): Medallion of Lugus
Strength: 2
Personal Goal: Find the item that has been stolen from the Council.
Background: You are among Lugus', the God of the Suns, followers. You carry with you a medallion to Lugus, which can blind an attacker, protecting whoever wears it from being assassinated. The medallion is consumed in the progress, and you will not be revealed the identity of the assasilant.

You have come to the city only some days ago, searching for an item that has been stolen from the Empyrean Council. The problem is that you do not yet know which item you are searching.
You do not have any family, and you do not have any special relation to the small city, but you enjoyed Clairone's song the past few days and, due to your good nature and trained strength, you decided to stay and help the villagers catch the killer.

Your dislike of ale seems to have afflicted the innkeepers opinion on you (you are staying at the inn), but he seems like a good and honest man to you.

You are percieved as a traveller, which is good since you do not want to warn the thief about your presence. It could, however, draw suspicion to you from others, so be cautious.

Spoiler Stonemason (BananaLee) :
Official Title: Stonemason
Role: Severed Soul ("Wolf"): You are the helper of the killer: At night you can either make sure that he is not detected leaving his home, or that he is not detected entering his targets home, should there be anyone watching.
Item(s): None
Strength: 2
Background: You are a part of the killer (who is disguised as a local merchant), that he has split from himself in order to not get caught easily. Your strength will count towards wolf victory, but if the killer comes in trouble, your role is to be the "distraction" or "scapegoat" that will grant him an extra day (or confirm his innocence by voting against a guilty :mischief:).
Your goal is that the killer survives to overpower the innocents - this means that you should not vote to have the killer lynched to save yourself - you will lose if he dies!

GM Comment: Normally, the Severed Souls of the Sidar does not really possess the ability to speak or think for themselves - this is a liberty taken in this notw: Gameplay trumps realism, I'm afraid. I also know that this role is perhaps the hardest. But if you play it fully, perhaps it is also the most rewarding.

Spoiler Innkeeper (Icekommander) :
Official Title: Innkeeper
Role: Storyteller: As long as you are alive, I will post a small story every day. It could contain clues as to the killer's identity.
Item(s): Ruby Ring (No effect, but perhaps you can convince someone that you can trade it for something?)
Strength: 2
Personal Goal: Make sure that the Hunter and the Drunkard stays alive
Background: You are the big, glad and hearty innkeeper of the village - in other words, you sell beer and rent out rooms to the travellers that come to visit the village.
Clairone's beautiful song was of course a considerable boost to your business - in fact, so much that your business could be in danger! Luckily, a couple of the locals are still throwing down beer like there was no tomorrow!
In particular, the Hunter and the Drunkard are your best customers, and you'd do your best to keep them alive. The Hunter is quite a shady type, but you doubt that he would anyone, least of all Clairone. Has he not, after many a night of drinking and with a hammering hangover, delighted in her beautiful voice, enjoying your special spiced eggs?
The Drunkard? You are quite sure that he is not capable of anything at all. He spends most of his time begging on the street, in order to buy beer.

A couple of days ago, however, a traveller came to the city. While he does not drink beer at all, he has rented a room in your establishment and enjoys your good food and jovial jokes with a genuine and innocent happiness. Nevertheless, he isn't a local...

Lastly, you always enjoy a good tale, and you know many good ones about your small and beloved village. You take delight in telling stories, about Awrail or about dragons and adventurers, and most of the villagers like the sound of your voice and believes your stories to hold some sort of truth. Perhaps some of them will even help identify the killer? Who knows?

GM Comment: Your identity as the storyteller is a secret - perhaps this is for a reason. Be careful about who you share the info with.

Spoiler Hunter (Thomas.Berubeg) :
Official Title: Hunter
Role: Thief: You can attempt to steal things from people at night.
Item(s): Searing Blade (+1 strength)
Strength: 1
Personal Goal: Get hold of three items
Background: You are a hunter of profession, but your passion is stealing. Often gone for days at a time, you even have the possibility of reaching nearby villages and see what "unneccessary items" the inhabitants happen to possess. You were out on such a trip some weeks ago, and was intimidated by a golden sword in a temple dedicated to Lugus. Deciding that you probably needed it more than the god, you decided to keep it.

Awrail is your home, and even if you are not there as often as most of the other inhabitants, you cherish the nights in a proper bed under a proper roof that much more - and of course, you too cherished Clairone'song. Thinking you could help both the village and yourself (every victim leaves something behind; perhaps there is something exciting?), you decided to stay and help root out the killer.

You know the innkeeper well, as you are often in need of a stiff drink or two after returning home, and you sell him your catchings. You even sold him a couple of the "unorthodox" ones in times of need, but you don't suspect he's on to you stealing yet. Anyway, you percieve him as a good and hearty man, and you could not imagine him being behind the murder - besides, it'd hurt his business. Most of the travellers that come to the town come there to hear the voice of the harpy
