GALACTIC NEWS ORGANIZATION (NDE 9)
...and that's how to make
Sl'vurg'a Pie. Now, for the Backwater Region Update, we take you to Mr Dee. Good evening, Mr Dee... how goes?
It has been a very busy year out here, Mr Grey. Very busy. So, without further ado...
Astral Sojourners
Dictatorial elections have swept through the worlds of the Astral Sojourners. Out of 472 candidates, only one made the cut (and then only through secondary and tertiary vote casts). The winner, Blajat Ravinam, has vowed to mobilize the Sojournership for war, though it has not been specified against who. He has also called for a new neural implant design to connect pilots to their fighters. As news of this regime change filters out beyond the Sojournership, neighboring faction populations are beginning to feel a little uneasy. (STORY BONUS: +50 fighters)
The new Supreme Dictator has wasted no time in upgrading and developing Oncol's infrastructure. New contracts and back-alley deals have brought a new level of prosperity to the Sojourner homeworld.
Careful trade negotians have resulted in the purchase of new Construction techniques from the Dysonians. Also, new ways to manipulate energy have been discovered in a small lab on Enemsi. The resulting Energy technology has been quickly turned into patented products and will provide a small boost to the Sojourner Economy for this fiscal year.
A massive build-up has begun in the Sabro System. A brand new fleet of Cruisers, Carriers, and Fighters has been commissioned, strengthening the Sojourner military almost tenfold! The Interstellar Bus fleet returns to Oncol.
A new project has begun in the Sojournership, code-named "Sustained Research." Sojourner scientists hope to be able to diversify technology research to produce more technological achievements in a shorter amount of time.
Harpellian Hegemony
Scientists on Harpell have perfected measures to offer a limited resistance and protection against the Scourge. Some of the same principles will also offer improvements to the Gentroops currently serving the Hegemony.
Fleet Colony-2 has begun the 3-year journey to Lander.
Haven
Haven scientists have also this year made significant discoveries in the field of Scourge research, and have come up with techniques of their own to combat this threat to humanity. Byblos and Naqu Systems have seen an upswing in development, making the colonists happier. On Xanthus Prime, 150 new fighters roll off the production lines.
Preparations begin in Byblos to prepare for an expected arrival of the Scourge. After the destruction of the jumpgate in Dahl last year, Haven military planners are taking no chances. The Sentinal jumps to Kalekka, monitoring the situation there. TF Beta moves to Ramidi. The famed Blue Fame scoutship has returned to XanthusP. TF Alpha moves to Naqu. The Silence makes the jump into the Class 2 Jumpgate at Venever, targeting the Argus System, a journey which will take the brave crew of the Silence 2 years to complete.
Haven colonists on all the colony worlds report remarkable discoveries about the local flora and fauna, and have made great strides in understanding how to adapt to different environments, enhancing the quality of life on Haven colony worlds.
Jaenar
The Universe is indeed a strange place. Very strange.
Perhaps the most stunning news this year is the resurgence of the Jaenar Empire. Just this year the survivors of the Anatolia Catastrophe have turned up on the other side of the Region and colonized Domaar (their new home system) and Xanj! From what can be discerned, the Jaenarans had just completed a design for a new "ultra-carrier" they call a Battlestar, and had completed 3 of them when the Scourge came. Many Jaenarans fled Anatolia, crossing through the jumpgates like crazy. For whatever reason, there was a glitch in one of the jumpgates and it shot the small survivor fleet across the Region to Domaar.
The Jaenarans have now returned to stake their claim in the Old Dominion.
Miria
Across Miriam space sweeping development has taken hold of the Ingram, Centaus, and Hr'Tor systems. Investment and development have expanded the colony worlds, and improved upon the homeworld.
CF2 jumps to Venever. A half-dozen Cruisers jump from Hr'Tor to Centaus. EF2 makes the jump to Jemma, and comes across the Trinity Fleet and the Old Dominion Defense Net. EF1 begins the jump through the Class 3 Jumpgate to Xanthus Prime.
In Kalekka, the Warfleet has succeeded in disabling all off-planet communications to any but the Warfleet. However, there have been no transmissions coming from the surface in quite some time, and scans show a series of explosions in major industrial sectors, as well as a continued population decline.
Republic of ZIB
A new government has emerged on Zadon, promising to usher the Republic back into an era of prosperity and partying.
To kick things off, two new Fleets are constructed, one each in Zadon and New Zion. Both fleets contain 5 Carriers, 50 fighters, and 10 Transports and will be named "Bob Marley" and "New Hope," respectively.. Word on the ground is of a new major colonization effort by the Republic, to regain lost momentum when the crackpots were in charge. An additional 50 Fighters in each System are constructed by the Private sector, in appreciation of the new government. (STORY BONUS: +100 Fighters)
Several behind-the-scenes trading occurs with some minor factions, netting Republic scientists new understanding in the fields of Construction and Energy.
Many fleet movements are occuring, as well. The brunt of the ships in Zadon head to New Zion, leaving behind only 6 Cruisers to keep watch over the homeworld. The cruisers in New Zion split, leaving 6 for defense, 4 join the Jewels of Ethiopia, and the rest form the Jah Warrior Fleet, which jumps to Farrel (MDP 6), finding a few nice worlds.
The Sellasie jumps into the Class 3 Jumpgate to Nellis. Jewels of Ethiopia make the jump to Ophius. The Black Diamond Skunk jumps to Moda, finding a sparse, but usable System (MDP 3). Initial scans show high concentrations of rare minerals and other elements present in the Asteroid Belt. Colonization of this system could prove VERY lucrative, indeed. Midnight Marauder jumps to Argus.
Birds of Paradise jump to Asgron, exiting the jump gate and immediately assuming the offense. The pirates in the system, complacent after many years of being left alone, scramble to mount a defense. The battle is quick and deadly (for the pirates), though they did score a few hits on the Republic fleet. (ZIB: -10 Fighters; Pirates: -1 Carrier, -25 Fighters)
Skyjack Conclave
Things are mostly uneventful in the Conclave, this year. The Thecoliv Swarm moves to Vayin, and there is development at Nos.
Imperial Republic of Trinity
Ragnor, Hern, and Trinity are all developed this year, bringing new prosperity, and more monet, to the Faction. Development is begun in Hari, slated to complete next year. A Trade Route is established with the Republic of Roma. This route is expected to begin bringing a boost to Trinity in about 3 years.
Meanwhile, in the Hari System, a great effort is underway to move the colony to the far side of the planet, to minimize damage during the periodic solar flares. Ships are ordered to maintain a safe distance from the star, and to park on the far side when in orbit. A plethora of probes are sent out to collect more data on the solar flares, in hopes of understanding the sun and to hopefully find a way to control the flare. As all this is happening, an unpredicted flare lashes out from the sun. Luckily, many colonists had already moved to the far side, but significant damage and loss of life was still recorded. (Trinity: -3k people on Hari)
A Cultural Fair is held on Holden, attempting to entice the Zentraedi population into joining the Imperial Republic. The citizens are shown the marvels of Trinity technology, and introduce to many concepts the Zentraedi had never grasped before. Amusingly enough, it was the introduction of pets that won the Zentraedi people over. (Zentraedi Empire Joins Imperial Republic of Trinity)
In the Asuka System, scientists are attempting to understand the Old Dominion Defense Net. In careful steps, they are dismantling parts of the system, attempting to understand how to reactivate it, and also to try to unlock some secrets. Unfortunately, the full story will never be known about what happened in those last few minutes onboard the main section of the Net. All that is known is that the Lead Scientist transmitted a desperate SOS mere moments before the Defense Net begain exploding. Needless to say, the team onboard was killed in the explosion, but also, bits and pieces of the Net were thrown throughout the System, impacting violently with some of the planetary bodies, including the primary colony. The multiple impacts were lessened by quick action on the part of the SJAC crews and the crew of the Space Station, but many pieces still made it through the atmosphere and collided with the planet. Over 10,000 people died that day, and the infrastructure on Asuka took a terrible blow (Trinity: -10.5k & -1 DL on Asuka)
Work continues on attempting to "uplift" the Skinnies of Pr'ator to a higher level of sentience. So far, not much progress has been made, but the scientists assigned to the project are confident they can force the necessary physical and social evolution of this peculiar species.
Tram moves to Tron. Hemp moves to Nolat. Shalin moves to Hari and merges with Exodus. The Yolin fleet is disbanded at Trinity. Sypher makes a successful retreat out of Anatolia and back to Hern.
UCCT
In the UCCT there is a consumer revolt against the corporate marketing machines. The resulting economic chaos of so many boycotts and retaliatory ad campaigns has plunged the UCCT economy into a Depression. (UCCT: Stable -> Depression)
...And so it goes in the Backwater Region, Mr. Grey. Back to you.
STORY WINNERS
-Astral Sojourners (+50 Fighters)
-Soul Warrior (+100 Fighters)
NOTES:
-I have added Troop and Ship ATTACK and DEFENSE values to your Faction data sheet. This should help you all gauge relative strengths and weaknesses.
-Lord Iggy: You specified 4 EP to improve Byblos. You can only improve one Development level at a time. However, this time I gave you a break, and threw the extra 2 EP to develop Naqu. Next time I will just bank the extra EP.
-SoulWarrior: 1 EP only purchases 50 Fighters.
-Welcome back, Andis-1
-TerrisH: just so you know, the event at Asuka was not a punishment for anything. It was just something that was going to happen regardless of who touched that Net.
