stDarNES1: Stars! -- UPDATE 11 (PART I)

GALACTIC NEWS ORGANIZATION (NDE 11)

GreyNewsCaster.jpg

Debate continues as we try to find for you, the viewer, exactly who the Vakkra are, and where they come from. We can rest easy for now, though, because they only seem interested in killing humans.

Mr Dee, how fare our favorite naked apes?

DinoNewsCaster.jpg

Well, Mr Grey, the news isn't all that good, I'm afraid. The Vakkra continue to advance upon human worlds, and seem to be concentrating on controlling entire sectors before moving on. We'll have a lot more information over the next few years, as we watch and study Vakkra tactics.

Moving right along...

VAKKRA INCURSION

Deep scans show a small amount of Vakkra reinforcements arriving in Ramidi, Kalekka, and Venever.

Astral Sojourners

While awaiting a reply from the Vakkra, the Sojournship has been busy building up Nox and Oncol, and establishing a new colony on Sierra with Interstellar Bus. Meanwhile, the military has been busy building new warships at Oncol, including the first major production of Starlight Fighters.

2 Cruisers break of from Vengeance and form the First Impressors Fleet. First Impressors fleet jumps to Colos (MDP 6). It is a decent system with almost a dozen planets, but oddly enough, no planet in the system has any kind of moon or ring. It is definitely a unique system as far as Sojourner knowledge goes. Vengeance leaves the Sierra System and jumps to Sabro.

The Vakkra response comes late in the year, in the form of 4 Destroyers, and a new ship that appears to be some sort of carrier/transport. Instructed to cooperate with the Vakkra, the military at Oncol maintains discipline and does not fire at the intruders. The Vakkra Carrier dispatches over a hundred smaller ships that disperse to the Sojourner worlds. Other smaller ships disperse and attach themselves to many of the ships in the system.

It is then when all hell breaks loose. The Sojourner leadership had concluded that the Vakkra would accept cooperation, but such is not the case. All the myriad ships dispersed from the Vakkra Fleet, it becomes quickly known, are part of an assimilation force. The ships that entered the colonial spaces dispatched troops determined to assimilate the populace.

Luckily, at least a little, the Sojourner leadership had a back up plan, and quick action was taken to react to this unexpected turn of events. The populace was quickly rallied into a resistance, but for now, little is effectively accomplished aside from attempting to hide from the assimilation force. Those unlucky enough to be caught are encased in some kind of bio-mechanical shell, and emerge mere hours later as a cyborg-like drone, acting to aide the Vakkra in assimilating others. There are no returns to any kind of communication sent to the Vakkra. They are cold, calculating, and ruthlessly efficient.
(Astral Sojourners: 20M people assimilated, -5M civilian casualties)

In space, several ships fall to Vakkra assimilation before any action can be taken. Data collected from the ships indicate that the Vakkra take over essential ship functions first, then assimilate the crew one by one. The speed at which they accomplish this is astonishing: a cruiser is fully assimilated in less than an hour.

As action is taken by the Oncol fleets, combat breaks out between the Sojourners and the Vakkra. It is a mess. Cruisers move in, targeting the Vakkra Destroyers as best they can, fighters and Starlight Fliers are unleashed. Laserts, missiles, sabots, EMP bombs, and ionised plasma stream from the Sojourner Fleets. The Vakkra ships begin responding to the attack and unleash their own terrifying weapons on the Sojourners. The assimilated Sojourner ships seem inactive, and do not make an attempt to join the combat.

In the end, with heavy losses, the Sojourner ships break to the jumpgates. Curiously enough, the Vakkra ships do not pursue.
(Astral Sojourners: 5 Cruisers assimilated, 1 carrier assimilated, -67 Starlight Fliers, -98 Fighters, -3 Carriers, -12 Cruisers. VAKKRA: -1 Destroyer, -48 Fighters[assimilation pods])

The stage seems to be set for a battle to regain Oncol.

With the battle raging at Oncol, there has been a rippling effect across the Sojournership that has stopped the growth of the economy, as virtually no goods are able to leave Oncol, and passage through Oncol for internal tradeships has essentially ceased.

(NOTE: Starbase is disputed. No ships can be built at Oncol. Also, because of the current battle with the Vakkra, Oncol is producing only half EP this turn).

Harpellian Hegemony

Lander is colonized! A truly spectacular system, and one the Hegemony has plans for. New technology has been researched to increase ship weapons strength and power, the Hegemony being as plagued by paranoia of the Vakkra as everyone else. A new groundforce is established at Qomoc.

Haven

After seven long years of debate, construction, revision, and whatnot, University of MechTech is completed at Xanthus Prime! The university is expected to bring focus and dedication to the fields of Construction, Energy, and Robotics. On another scientific note, new ship weapons have been rolled out to the Fleet, in hopes of increasing defense against the new Vakkra threat.

Three new fleets are constructed at Xanthus Prime, 2 cruiser fleets (Bronze and Platinum) and 1 carrier group (ShieldForce). Money has also been invested into improving the Scourge Foam. Fingers are still crossed at Byblos as to how much longer the Scourge will be encased.

Preparation continue in Fetarra to provide defenses around the jumpgate, in case the Sojourners decide to make their move while Haven is preoccupied with the duel threat of the Scourge and the Vakkra. Havenite military strategists are exercising their brains attempting to figure out reliable strategies to use against the Vakkra when the inevitable combat begins.

Swarmforce continues to foam the Scourge in Byblos. It is thought that every piece of Scourge is now safely encased in foam. Still, SwarmForce remains busy constantly checking to see if the scourge is breaking through. Blue Flame is set up under quarantine, in case any Scourge had secured itself on the ship. No sign of Scourge is found, and Blue Flame is returned to normal duty. Hive Force remains defensive, assisting in the preparation of defenses in Fetarra.

Sentinel moves to Trinity, to avoid running into the Vakkra.

TF Alpha is sent to Naqu, attempting to evacuate as many colonists as possible before the Vakkra arrive. It's not a question of if, but when. The fleet arrives and begins loading colonists, foregoing any personal effects and cramming people in like sardines. It is not long before the warnings come in that a Vakkra fleet of 3 Destroyers has entered Naqu. The commander of TF Alpha makes the hard decision to leave those not yet boarded behind, and makes all haste to the jumpgate to Byblos. His fleet is set upon and destroyed mere moments before the jumpgate is reached. The last received transmissions from Naqu indicate the colonists attempting to resist the Vakkra, but ultimately succumbing to them.
(Haven: TF Alpha destroyed, -6M colonists, 7M colonists assimilated, Naqu Occupied By Vakkra)

Jaenar

Things are quiet in the new Jaenar Empire. Construction continues on the Raptor Production Facility. Most of the Empire's economy is geared to military production, doubling the cruiser force, and adding 10 new transports to the fleet.

One battlestar from Domaar loads 250 fighters and jumps to Xanj.

Miria

Scientists on Miria have devised new methods for ship hull production which they believe will allow them to build ships that will rival the Vakkra in size. The military wastes no time in putting Mirian Destroyers on the production line.

On Centaus and Hr'Tor two sister fleets are built, consisting of 6 Destroyers, 12 Cruisers, and 100 fighters. 1,000 Soldiers are trained at Ingram. A small amount, but enough to keep the colonists confident.

In Silodon, the scoutship receives orders to contact the native population. The meeting is tense, with translators working overtime to establish reliable communication. The captain of the scoutship finally is able to meet with several of the world's leaders. During the course of the meeting, the Mirian captain demonstrates Mirian technology, shows the leaders videos and holos of the regions of space explored by Mirian civilization. He has them captivated. The offer is made for the Silodons to join the Mirian Empire, and receive the full rights and technology of the rest of Mirian civilization.

After a couple months of deliberating, the leaders of the world agree! (Silodon joins Mirian Faction)

At long last, EF1 reaches Xanthus Prime. Massive reorganizations occur amongst the military fleets. The creation of the Black, White, Red, and Yellow Guardian Fleets is seen as a step forward for the Mirian Navy. Incidentally, there has been a sharp decrease in the number of ulcers, heartburn, and headaches amongst Mirian Logisticians.

The Yellow Guardian Fleet, newly organized, arrives in Emey on the eve of battle unbeknownst (though not completely unexpected) to them. They are greeted on arrival by Duke Atreides himself, who has been sent to command them from the HMS Vengeance. His arrival is well met, and preparations begin for planning the attack on the Vakkra ships present in Venever.

In the middle of the night (relative, of course, to the Mirian day/night schedule), alarms go off across the fleet. The Vakkra have arrived in Emey. 2 Destroyers, no more. Atreides takes command and the Yellow Guardian Fleet moves in for combat. The two fleets approached each other. Yellow Guardian's morale was high, as they had a larger fleet than what had been destroyed at Kalekka, against a smaller force. It was time to even the score, at least a little bit.

Weapons began firing. The now-infamous shimmering effect of the Vakkra ships taken in stride. The accuracy of their targeting systems might not be high against whatever the Vakkra were using, but the Mirian Fleet had a large amount of weapons to unleash against only two ships. The fleet spread out to maximize the weapons spread. The Vakkra ships unleashed their fury of weapons onto the cruiser. Several Mirian cruisers were destroyed almost immediately, but still Yellow Guardian pressed on, now concentrating fire on one Vakkra ship at a time.

More shots fired by the Vakkra ripped through several more cruisers. Then, an unexpected hit to a Vakkra ship ripped through it. The ship ruptured, exploding silently in space. The remaining Vakkra ship let loose a volley of energy, destroying more cruisers, but it was not enough. With only one ship to contend with, the remaining cruisers of Yellow Guardian barrelled into the destroyer, tearing it to pieces in short order!
(Miria: -21 Cruisers. Vakkra: -2 Destroyers)

stDarNES: Stars! - Update 11 (PART II)

Republic of ZIB

Sellassie completes its jump to Nellis, establishing contact with the 51st Airborne. The crew of the Sellassie begins utlizing the unique Sound System on the 51st. The Lone Ranger continues its journey to Braedi, with one year left to go. Jewels of Ethiopia loads with colonists and jumps to Farrel. Birds of Paradise jumps to Asgron and holds defensive position in the system, claiming it for the Republic. Black Diamond Skunk jumps to Moda. Midnight Marauder jumps to Totalus. New Hope establishes a colony at Farrel, then returns to New Zion. Bob Marley continues to Nellis. Alphaera and Atanka are both claimed by the Republic, enforced by the ships in the system.

Zadon is built up, with massive improvements to infrastructure and quality of life. 50 fighters come on line at Zadon.

Skyjack Conclave

Significant investment is made at Var Hodis and Nos. Research into biotechnology has confirmed that word from other Factions regarding manipulating human DNA is true. This capability has given the Military mind to perhaps train some "genetically elite" soldiers. A final decision has not yet been reached amongst the Conclave. More weapons technology is gained from the 51st Airborne, in exchange for more supplies and energy technology. 11 new Carriers and 240 Fighters are commissioned at Lambert's Ring.

Scorpleten returns to Lambert. Tumbleweed jumps to Xanj. Haasted Swarm is formed at Lambert and jumps to Nos. Testyr Swarm is also formed, and jumps to Ceiti, where it merges with Firebrand. Clearcutter Fleet is assembled and begins the long jump to the Dominus System.

Talks begin with the Butu Technocracy regarding free trade and protectorate-ship. The talks are not going particularly well, as the Technocracy representatives are a little wary of the Skyjacks. However, as the talks seemed at the brink of breaking down, the news reached Yenang...

...The Vakkra had appeared in the Vayin System. 2 Destroyers and 1 Carrier had appeared as if from the black of space itself, hulls shimmering in and out of existence. Thecoliv Swarm, while surprised, responds quickly to the threat. Her commanders were itching to try out the Old Dominion Cruisers, and now had the perfect opportunity.

The battle begin swiftly. The Vakkra Carrier opened its bays and released a swarm of Fighters only slightly less numerous than the Skyjack Fighter swarm. Both fleets of fighters engaged en masse, and, despite being outgunned, the Skyjack Fighters out-maneuvered their Vakkra counterparts. Meanwhile, the Skyjack Cruisers had begun unleashing hell, all the while trying to avoid taking any direct hits from the Vakkra weaponry. The Old Dominion Cruiser were different than standard Skyjack Design, and even though most of the systems on the ships had to be retrofitted with Skyjack technology, some of the energy weapons systems still retained a significant punch of Old Dominion power. This power was demonstrated when one cruiser fired and hit the aft section of one of the Vakkra ships. Almost immediately it was as if a chain reaction had begun across the entire Destroyer. Taking their cue, the remaining Skyjack Cruisers attempting to repeat the shot, concentrating fire on the lone Vakkra Destroyer, which turns onto the defensive, although it manages to rip apart another cruiser.

At the same time, the Skyjack fighter group is slowly being decimated, although not without giving as good as they got. The Vakkra Fighters are slower and less-maneuverable than Skyjack ships. They just have much more advanced firepower, and better defenses. In the end, though, the Skyjack military imperative to live to fight another day comes into play, and the fighter swarm beats a hasty retreat, attempting to minimize exposure to Vakkra fire. The Vakkra fighters begin to pursue, then suddenly return to their own carrier, as the last Vakkra Destroyer is destroyed. The Carrier shimmers out, and is gone.

It is the first true victory against the Vakkra. (+2 Confidence)
(SKYJACKS: -3 Old Dominion Cruisers, -3 Carriers, -127 Fighters. VAKKRA: -2 Destroyers, -87 Fighters)

...Back on Yenang, the results of the battle are finally received. Everyone remembers to breathe again. The Technocracy Representatives confer amongst themselves, and make a few calls. Three hours later, the Technocracy officialy joins the Skyjack Conclave. (+ Yenang, +1 tech Weapons: Ship, Butu ships added to Skyjack Fleet)

Imperial Republic of Trinity

Sweeping upgrades to existing infrastructure, and massive amounts of new building occurs across Trinity space ak Sakri'i, Nolat, Pr'ator, and Ragnor. Development is beginning in Asuka, as well. At Hari, research continues into the strange solar flares afflicting the sun, and a possible solution is thought up and passed to the upper echelons for approval.

The next stage of uplift is begun on the Invid. However, something has apparently gone wrong, as the Invid have become violent and aggressive toward any person they see. Several deaths have occured on the research team, and they have been evacuated for safety reasons.

Military build-up has begun in Asuka, with a whole fleet of Cruisers, SJACs, and Fighters coming online. A new fleet (Strike One) is formed at Trinity, consisting of 10 transports loaded to the brim with soldiers. It jumps to Asuka. Distrib-A leaves 2 SJACs in Nolat System, then jumps to Ragnor. Distrib-B leaves 2 SJACs in Hari, then jumps to Hern. Distrib-C jumps to Tron. Sakri'i moves back to Holden, Ra moves to Vayin, and records the aftermath of the Skyjack battle against the Vakkra. Tram jumps to Trinity and disbands; Sypher jumps to Trinity, and Obelisk moves to Holden.

UCCT

Currently, the resistance to the corporations is increasing, and this faction is producing nothing.

COMMUNICATIONS:

To: Jaenar Empire
From: Corporate State of Imerik

We are concerned about the build-up of forces in Xanj. We are peaceful business men, and hope that this build-up is not the preamble to invasion by the Jaenar Empire.

...And so it goes in the Backwater Region, Mr. Grey. Back to you.

STORY WINNERS
-Astral Sojourners: +1 Weapons: Ship Technology Level
-Trinity: +1 Weapons: Ship Technology Level

NOTES:

- TO ALL: Because of the very long delay (and believe me, I appreciate your patience), I am awarding each faction with 2 EP. :goodjob:

- SW: Starbases cost 3 EP, not 1 EP. The cost for each item is on the first page of posts. I banked the EP you had set to spend on a starbase.

- RULES UPDATE #1: Assault Shuttles are now available. They require Construction Tech Level 3. (which means pretty much everyone has them). For 1 EP you can build 25 of them. They take up the same amount of space inside a Carrier as a Fighter.

- RULES UPDATE #2: The Economy Level Rules sucked. So I'm changing them. If you fall below STABLE, it will cost 4 EP to go up one level. If you wish to bring your economy above STABLE, it will cost 6 EP. You can only increase your Economy by ONE LEVEL each turn.

- RULES UPDATE #3: Since a few of you had asked, I'm adding official rules for Espionage. It works pretty simply... you can specify in your orders that you want to build an espionage network in any Faction you have contact with. This basic network will relay basic information or perform simple sabatouge, with a high chance of failure. You can also dedicate EPs to acts of espionage, to increase the chance of accurate information, or the chance of success on a sabatouge mission. If the espionage goes off without any problems, I will send the info gained in a PM. If the mission fails, it will be posted in the update.

You can also initiate counter-espionage, if you think you're being spied upon. As with espionage, you can dedicate EPs to the task, and increase your chances of uncovering a spy.

ORDERS ARE DUE THURSDAY, APRIL 6 AT 0900 (9AM) EST.

Ha. Got it done before midnight.

Hahah! Take that Astral Sojourners. Are you back on humanity's side now?

A moment silence for the fallen people of Naqu, and the brave crew of the TF Alpha. They will be forever remembered.

I protest! *mumblegrumblemuttercomplain*:gripe:

Not if I can avoid it! This is merely a minor setback. :crazyeye:

We'll still accept you. Your mistakes can be forgiven.

But maybe you are already too far gone... probably, yes.

Anyway, some actual grumbles.
In space, several ships fall to Vakkra assimilation before any action can be taken.
I had a hundred Starlight Fliers. If they were being assimilated first, they would have responded a lot faster, and if the normal fighters were being assimilated first, I'm surprised to have lost so many of these.

<assimilation losses snipped>
Astral Sojourners: -67 Starlight Fliers, -98 Fighters, -3 Carriers, -12 Cruisers. VAKKRA: -1 Destroyer, -48 Fighters[assimilation pods])
Carriers cost half as much as Destroyers, but lose at a rate of twelve to one? :dubious: (not to mention the 3-1 fighter loss rate)

CONFIDENCE: Respectful
ECONOMY: Stable
TOTAL ECONOMY: 24 +2EP Bonus -3EP battle in Oncol
TRADE ECONOMY: 0
When did my economy drop? And why aren't I receiving my EP for new tech?

Fourth, I want a busload of data on the Vakkra. Number of troops, general appearance, assimilation process, elemental makeup, ship composition, whether they're a complete Borg ripoff or just a poor imitation, willingness to communicate, you know the drill. I have eight strategies assembling themselves in my head and I want to know what will work. (Unless, of course, you're willing to just let me write strategy and hand out story bonii for it.)
Also, why did they start by attacking large, powerful empires instead of the single-planet factions with tiny fleets?

Fifth. IC Diplomacy.
To Dysonians
From Astral Sojourners
Will you trade us Construction 6 for Ship Weapons 4 and 1 EP? (OOC: I traded them SW 3 last turn, iirc) The Vakkra are likely to see your Sphere as a great prize, and we do not want to see such an endeavor perverted to evil.

Indeed, I myself am quite glad they choose to attack my most heavily defended system, but it's still puzzling :hmm:

a)They must not be able to detect the force concentration at long range
b)they deliberately go after the concentrations to assimilate them
c)They are dumb
d)some other reason

Oh well these SOBs can be beaten, this is hardly an Outside Context Problem after all...

@Trinity: The Conclave would like to express an interest in buying your Ship weapons technology - what do you want for it? We are prepared to offer; technology, EPs, and data from our own engagements with the Vakkra, and perhaps will forgive your current intrusion into Skyjack space...

The assimilation targets were mainly your capital ships, with your fighter-class ships being seen as merely something to destroy, not assimilate. Your military was expecting to be able to cooperate with the Vakkra, and as such, didn't realize what was going on until it was too late. Obviously, you made it clear you would resist hostile attempts, but the Vakkra did have the jump on you.

Erik Mesoy said:

You gain the EP when new tech is Discovered, not traded. You haven't complained about it before.

Your economy dropped down to stable due to the war occuring in your home system. It's smack dab in the center of your Empire, and the effect rippled outward.

Working on it. You'll be given data, don't worry. I just didn't have time to get it all together last night. Patience, please.

Well, you did kind of invite them into your space... (good thing you had contingency plans). Honestly, what did you expect from the Vakkra?

Intresting.

Well, you did have a HUGE force of cruisers there. Not that surprising, really.

All will be revealed in time... perhaps. ;)

Only because I never *noticed* it before. <sulks>
Bonus 1 EP for researching a tech is essentially "tech costs 1 less". Part of the point was to be able to cash in on an even trade.

Your economy dropped down to stable due to the war occuring in your home system. It's smack dab in the center of your Empire, and the effect rippled outward.
Ah, right, I thought I just lost most of Oncol's production. Be a good chap and edit that into the update, will you? :)

Well, you did kind of invite them into your space... (good thing you had contingency plans). Honestly, what did you expect from the Vakkra?
I meant when they appeared the first time. I understand perfectly well why I'm in this war now, but why didn't they attack (for example) the Olgev Collective, which has all of 6 Cruisers?

And honestly, I expected Klingons, not Borg. :crazyeye:

@Erik: I edited the update to explain the drop of your economy.

There are reasons behind the first systems targeted by the Vakkra for invasion... you just haven't had the necessary data to figure it out yet. I think it will become quite apparent over the course of the next couple updates (depending on what you all do, maybe sooner, mayber later).

I also sent you a PM with the requested information regarding the Vakkra.

Darwin I remember asking similar questions last turn, it wasn't avaliable then, may I have these answers now please?

oh and the intresting bit was the losses to kill a destroyer, at least i have the destroyer tech now.

although i get the feeling i'll be getting hit by the first Vakkara Battleships *sigh*

@Kal'thzar: PM sent to you regarding Vakkra.

For those who have survived combat with the Vakkra, there is some additional knowledge not presented in the update (and won't be, until everyone can know it). In Haven's perspective, you have pretty much all the information you have been able to glean. If you think there's something you should know, PM with your questions, and if your Faction would have the knowledge (and I overlooked it), then I'll provide you with the information.

Yeah. I never had a chance to perform my 'Virus vs. Vakkra' experiment. That should help a lot soon.

The Skyjack Conclave:
hmmm an Improvemtn in robotica, and permision to let us jump our ship to the Caipital of the Old Dominion. which is right off your system, if our old maps are to belive. any data on yuor battle would be much appriciated, as we are about to fight them our selves this turn.

OOC:

wow, that's a lot of EP darwin... but you obviously been readding up on your robotech, so I'll take the deal. time to developmyself a grand old weapon.. reflex cannon, here I come!
