As to joining you, what do you offer us? We do not kill other men unless they first ride against us, therefore we accept your offer to maintain good relations.

We can give you...pretty much anything. Fame, Fortune, Glory. Name your price, and most likely it shall be yours...

Birth of the Dervish

For Avernum, it was the Bornze age, an age of metalworkers clankign away at ores brought ourt of the hills and mountians, an era now when warfare had reached a new profiency, and while the nation of Avernum, for now, had no other full nations, thier were still plenty of threats, from highway bandit-kings, breakaway city states (though, Avernum had rectlly sealed a pact which which rejoined the city states ot Avernum), and most prolifically, the Avernite tribe, just on the other side of the Avernos River, seeminglly mocking the capital city of the true Avernite nation.

It wa sin this world, that the concept of the Dervish was formed- what is a Dervish, a traveller to our lands, be he avernite, or a wwanderer from beyond? A Dervish is the most powerful warrior seen. Armed and armoured to a pinnacle of performence, and trained to a tee, they know no equal in battle- fighting on foot, they champions at the art of war, fighting with soward spear, and sheild, armed with leg plates, helmets, chest armor, and in some cases, more amor, if the case calls for it, they are the trues tof warriors the Avernite nation, and indeed, all nations, can feild.

Thier birth was- a melding, of the technology of good metal smithing, and of nessecity, the wars with the cross river Avernites was reaching a head- Avernum needed a new kind of warrior, a champion of champions to take the feild, and win the day.

dervish1stincarnation4oa.png

This, is a dervish; in this case, this Dervish is more lightlly armourd then usual, and his armor, decorated in the manner of the ocean and rivers, is rather tellign of his stationmentin the city of Avernum proper, an area considered sacred to botht he Sun God Sol Invictus, and God of the Sea, Ictheos. (This picture also servs as a good picture of the Avernite completion, tall, relitivlly stocky and defined, light skinned, and dark hair and eyes. )

Armed to the theet, particulerl with his massive blade, and well forged armour, he is prepared to fight anything, man or beast, that migth threated Avernums weel being- the elite of the elite, that no one can beat, the Dervish corps are a proud symbol of Avernite might.

(OOC; just as a noite, the Dervhish is both my UU, and a position in th emilitary- the game I'm basing my naiton from has it go the same way, also, expect these guys to be improved over time, as I want to keep the Dervish's my UU, essentially, forever, and just keep improving them- also, will race have any bearing on natiosn relations with one another- this NES is very realistic and complex, and so I'm interested to know- its also why i more or less defined my races look as North/Central Itallianthose southern itallian are little tanned greeklings;)

Edit-Addendum the Dervishes are highlly skilled warriors, and so can fight in both the most ordelly of line formations, or go it alone, acting as fanatical, and powerfully skilled warriors, using thier mighty "cutlass" blades to smash through any and all opponets who would stand agiasnt them in battle- this versitiltiy, combine dwith htier mastery of fighting in all manners and techniques, thier strength, diligent trianing, diligence, and thier mighty equipment make these the most powerful of soldires.

@Xen

If you're concerned about race and want it to be accurate, you're gonna be a nation of short people. :p

Whereas MINE will be all tall and buff-like. :smug: ;)

:D:joke:

Where did you get that pic, Xen? Don't tell me you actually did that by hand!:wow:

actually, thats not the case at all, height wise- only southern italians are short, other Itlaian populations are "normal" in size, and many above the normal mark- my area is full fo itallians, and only the tanned southerns are anywhere near short (because thiers so much southern greek in thier genetics)- all the pale itallians, inlcding a good friend of mine who heritage is from siclly, whos a pale is well above the mark- in his case, he's amoung the talles tin the school. for note, I'm 5"11, and hail from central Italy.

and no, its not by hand- but callin all Italians short dosent exactley please me :p

all that said, anyone particuler interested in italian ethnicity shoudl take a look here, at this site- shows some interesting things, like the arrangement of sub-ethnic populaitons in europe before the slavic migrations, around the bronze age http://www.angeltowns.com/members/racialreal/italians.html

Italy_Greek_South.jpg

the only surprise on that site, and its maps for me was just how tiny, and how weirdlly distrbuted the german; that is to say, Nordic, sub ethnicity is)- you need to remember, that these count genetic markers from before any slavic presence enters europe proper, and the site dosent show any- people know those boundaries well enough all ready. the site also has some incrediblly ugly people on it.

EDIT- this map is along the same lines, but still, overall, differnt, but still shows some interesting stuff

No offense. Just that I read that Romans were shorter than average in general. ;)

for southern itallian, that be true; for everyoen else- "not so much" :p

race will affect in that multi cultural societies generate more culture, and are less likely to fight someone over reasons of creed whereas a nation who haven't mingled and maintained a 'pure' bloodline will be composed of xenophobic individuals.

Edit:

To clarify about UUs. They can make up more than 10% of your military, however, clearly the more they make up, the less well trained they will be because there is only so much ability. The limit is how much your econom can maintain - UUs cost more to upkeep than normal soldiers.

Orders

*Grow Warriors by 300, Archers by 200

*Build Market Places in the cities, and advocate the use of the "communal" areas for farmers to sell their produce.

*Continue breeding the Cattle for strength so that they would pull the plows and carts better, and have more fiber and protien when eaten.

*Out on the grassland away from the farmland build massive wooden structures that are designed to hold massive numbers of cattle and be able to both breed and have a space for grazing. Call these structures Ranches.

*Continue to send scouts in all directions, espically into the mountains. Look for people, minerals and animals. Bring back samples of each (except people, just bring back reports for those buggers ;) )

*Continue to attempt to prefect the plows design so that the ground is easily turned with little effort.

*Require all men who farm to be taught by the temple how to turn the ground best so that is the best return (Have my priests taught this by my scientists if they do not know)

*Establish Lumber Camps in the forest were for every tree cut there will three more planted (Gather massive stockpiles of seeds so that this is possible.

*Name second city Nikisaki, and then the abandoned fishing village Hasiki

*All Cities focus on one aspect to excel at, then sell their produce to anyother city in return for the other cities product

Capital: Argiculture & Ranching
Nikisaki: Lumber
Hasiki: Agriculture & Fishing

*Establish as city at the black dot on the map (See below)

*The Military is to move in these patterns and conquer all areas in between and around the path for the Kiatian empire

A: 250 Hattkan, 250 Warriors, 100 Archers
B: 250 Hattkan, 300 Warriors, 100 Archers

The man was shoved into the room forcefully.

"Is this him?"

"Yes, sire, this is the man."

Kuataim stared at the dirty, grizzled man on the floor.

"Why do you wish to steal from Khaumasu? Do you not care about the advancement of the Khaumic people, or are you too enveloped in your own greed?"

The man said nothing, but kind of grinned. The guard who shoved the man in kicked him.

"The Emperor of the Khaumasi Empire has asked you a question!"

The man snarled, and turned to Kuataim.

"I am but a poor man, my lord, and making false money is the only way I can live." He said "my lord" in a rather sarcastic way.

"What?! Why do you not get a job? Why do you not contribute to society rather than counterfeit money? You know what, since I pity you so much I will set you free. Come with me, I will let you loose once we get to the street."

The man had a bewildered look on his face, but nevertheless jumped to his feet out of sheer joy of being let free despite his crimes.

Kuataim and the man, accompanied by a trio of guards, walked through the palace hall, down the steps, and out into the busy main street of Izhashov. There, Kuataim patted the man on the back, indicating he was to go. The man let out a cheer and start into the road.
But as he started, Kuataim reached under his robes and pulled out a sharp, elaborately carved stone axe, drew his arm back, and hurled it right at the man! The axe sliced cleanly through the man's neck, and his decapitated head fell to the ground in front of a horrified crowd of Main Street goers. Kuataim glared at the people.

"The man I have just slain is Zham Jazan, who, as most of you may know, is responsible for most of the currency counterfeiting business in Khaumasu. But no more! I shall now announce that the Khaumasi Empire is to execute a crackdown on counterfeiting, and anyone who is discovered to be an active counterfeiter is to be executed. But any counterfeiters who wish to confess will recieve no punishment, exept that they must vow to Khuzamua that they will end their ways. If anyone who makes this vow is discovered to still be active in counterfeiting, they will recieve torture and execution. This is all for the good of you, the people, so that your money is always worth something."

Kuataim promptly returned to his palace, and the people continued on with their daily basis.

Orders: Perform a crackdown on counterfeiting, like Kuataim described. Give the announcement to the entire nation.
Start using specific berries and herbs to combat jungle disease. Build infirmiries in all of the major cities to cure disease.
Continue encouraging people to reproduce and move in to new cities.
Expand in all directions.
Add 200 spearmen, 300 axemen, and 500 archers to my military. Begin researching shipbuilding now that we have coastal settlements.

Sorry about the crappy story, just can't seem to get in the mood.
If you have any questions about the orders, go ahead and ask on the thread or via PM.

We do not live for war, war is sadly necessary to spread the word of the light, though, and also to expand our nation, which is only necessary in light of cramped living spaces.

Now, what can we do for you? We offer you civilization. While this might seem corrupt and far too sensual, if this puts you off, fear not. There are other benefits to civilization. We are sure that you have suffered at least some raids from neighboring tribes, like that of Kaffa nearby. Now these raids can be devastating and damaging to a small nation, however, a large one, with a swift and efficient military force can turn away these minor raids and bring safety and peace much faster than a larger army.

We, like you, love the earth and it's denizens, and thus our nation is much alike yours in philosophy. We are greatful and glad to whichever great spirits sent us here, and we are eternally seeking perfection. Our long arduous path to perfection is not material, it is spiritual, and we must aid as many people as possible.

This brings us back to you. With the wonders of civilization, spiritual perfection is easier to attain; the hard work that dominates the life of your people is not nearly so harsh in a civilization, and thus with other, earthly matters turned away we can focus inward, unto ourselves in search of what corrupts us. And then we can remove that corruption, and we are purer as a people.

While we do open up the earth for it's resources, this can be justified. First, you must think scale. The earth is itself so tremendously huge, that to dig a small pit such as that we do to extract elements from it is nothing more to it than to us will be a scratch. We also scout ahead, and know well which rocks are located where, so damage to the earth is minimized.

Also, the changing of rocks into a metal is something much less destructive then one might imagine. The rocks are not destroyed, merely transformed, and the two halves, rock and mineral, that come out of it are purer than the whole was. We are purifying the sections of the earth that we do harm, and we harm very little.

Please, we hate destroying any spirits, and we do not want to shed more needless blood. Please join us, for the sake of both us and you.

Espirito! I need an answer before I can send in the precious orders.

What is fame and glory worth? Will our names be remembered down the ages? And if they were, what is that to us? We prefer to maintain our autonomy.

To:Tourijan
From:Kerch

We do see that you enjoy many benefits of civilization which we would liek to share in, however, were we to join you, we would have to ensure that none of our men would be drafted into the army, for fighting for fighting's sake is not our way.

Fame and glory ENSURES your name shall be remembered throughout time! How would you like to be remembered: the chieftain of some backwater tribe (who may not be remembered. No offense calling you "backwater" but you are kinda... In the hilly regions, not easily accesible. You wouldn't believe what my diplomats had to do to get here!), or the chieftain of a tribal state of Alesia, who helps to expand Alesia in the name of their tribe and of the Alesian empire all at once?

I offer you glory and power, and money. Money's good, no?

What if we could bring forth sanctions of the gods? If my druidic counil (we both have druids or priests, do we not?) could show a divine sign showing that to merge with us will bring greatness, surely you would merge with us?

We think not, for our auguries have already proven that there would be but one instance in which we should join with you and that has not come to pass.

Into The Highlands

Plains2.jpg

Generations passed. Many wars and campaigns filled the history texts of Sedaria. And now the wars seemed to be over, leaving the land between the rivers with two great nations: Daruk in the south, and the Ferusians in the north.

Daruk had been on the verge of conquering Ferusia, and thus Sedaria, many times. And many times they were pushed back by superior numbers or political unrest at home called for soldiers. King Du had actually conquered and captured the capital of Ferusia, but supply routes and constant counterattacks bled his army dry, and in the end, took his life.

King Desu overlooked the city of Daruk from his vintage spot, a clear view of the merchantile heartland, and beyond that were the endless rows of farmland and hills. And that was it. This scene was replicated dozens of times in all of the towns and cities of the empire. The town consisted of the basic industrial and merchantile jobs for the people, a market, a temple, a well or canal system as was built during the Age of Construction, and then endless upon endless farms that crowded around the narrow fertile valleys of the two rivers with no names.

Desu knew there was more then just farms and trade in the world. Already he had appointed a squadron of soldeirs to unearth a smooth, brownish rock that was found in the southern hills, boarding his kingdom. The metal, which he named Copper, was easily melted and reforged. But it was so brittle that it meant nothing to him. However, if there must be this metal, there must be more.

Scouts had returned earlier that month with reportings of metal found in the highlands, or badlands as some like to call it. In the north, these hills were barren wastelands, without much trees or water. But the scouting parties did manage to find a perculiar substance, and it must be extracted. Desu knew this was his only chance to make his mark upon history, and possibly conquer the Ferusians. Immediately he organized the army, and prepared to launch an attack into the badlands, where the ravaging barbarians had dwelt since the dawn of time.

ORDERS
-Fortify my position with Ferusia along the boundaries marked on the map.
-If ferusia attacks, use the chariots i leave to outflank the main invasion army, and encircle the invadors.
-Half of the army will be sent north to deal with the Highlands. Be as organized as possible, the only way to beat a Barbarian stronghold. The red arrow shows their attack into the Highlands.
-Establish mines for any metal found. If the metal is not readily used yet, stockpile it.
-Continue to build the infrastrucutre started last turn. Every semi-large village will hold a temple, well or canal, granary, marketplace, and a small barracks. This well help centralize and urbanize my people, and thus increase the population.
-Continue to research the metals and metallurgy.
-Hold parades to encourage the people to fight for Daruk.
